Great commentary. Maybe you can zoom in the next time as for a constructive critic 💪

I took Newaza's time on my stopwatch and in the video the stopwatch starts counting at 14'35" and the required 20 seconds are completed at 14'55".....the referee reaffirms his decision to newaza at the following 4 seconds (14'39" the 20 seconds would be completed at 14'59 of the video, if we take this into account) but the gesture had already been done and time was running, then at 15'02" try to call Mate and then make the Toketa gesture, ending the Newaza (it should have been toketa first and then Mate), the truth is that Newaza's time was already worthy of Ippon for completing the 20-second retention period, the referee's decision was correct.......It was a good fight.

The replay at 14'35" is in slow motion, if you start at 14:05 when he first calls osaekomi it lasts until 14:20 when Ippon is called. Certainly a risky move on my part going for the choke like that and he was a tough competitor. Later when I talked to the referees, they said they called Ippon because I was considered to be fleeing the mat. Apparently if you get too far out of bounds while in a pin, they just count it as ippon regardless of time. I don't know when that rule took effect because before this I thought you could go endlessly out of bounds. Oh well though, live and learn.

great breakdown, glad i didn't decide to fly to compete at that tournament. waste of money for trash reffing. no excuse when they have video replays.

Thanks! It’s hard, there isn’t a lot of transparency for what the refs are up to. Overall though it was well run and can’t complain about having some prize money!

The referees were horrible.

Certainly left something to be desired on some of the matches. I think some transparency would go a long way. I have a tendency to bring out weird rules haha! Were you there?
