It´s great to see a video about this. I respect my older senseis but some say height doesn´t affect technique and in some extreme cases like entering drop seoi nage against someone super short, the thing is almost imposible. Thanks.

The worst is when they're 6'4 AND stocky athletes. It's like doing judo with your dad. 🤣

Any chance of a long video going through the best throws based on height, same height and handedness? I'm good with basics now but I'm at the stage where I want to tailor my throws based on my opponent

Yep, same lol... Sort of a good thing though, you get the best of both worlds depending on the opponent.

Any Advice against players with a big belly? I can't seem to get my hips under cause it's in the way on taller guys with big belly and upright style

Definitely need this, I'm a pretty muscular guy but this typically means I get some taller dudes in my weight class. I know technically that should give me some advantage but I have a tough time getting in on my attacks against them, I also find my foot sweeps and reaps aren't quite is effective which is tough because I like to use them to set up my throws. Think I may need to alter my style a bit against taller guys.

so what if you are taller but have short legs (relatively low hip + long upper body)?

Is tai otoshi a good throw for short vs tall?
@FredThomas-x8v
@FredThomas-x8v 9 ай бұрын
it's a very difficult technique you rarely see in competitions. It happens when your opponent doesn't grab you and you throw by holding both hands on his same arm (at wrist & elbow level). Also more powerful makikomi variation where you grab arm and around neck and roll on mat like if you were swimming crawl turning to breath in on side. Most throw with both grips on are also done by tall guys who can hit your shin/ankle with their long leg, that's considered blend of tai otoshi with some ashi waza. Pure tai otoshi for learning with both grip on is when you turn, start throw by pushing opponent arm & lapel upward and forward (like if you throw a spear) for maximum off balance and then suddenly drop down without leg contact.

It's pretty much the tall player's te-waza. Why drop it down low for seoi nage when you can just tai otoshi the shorter person instead?

I like the reverse one a lot I think it’s called tani - otoshi

I have heard tai otosh often referred to as the height agnostic technique that works against short and tall. It is difficult to learn for most people, but I wouldn't say it's that rare in competition. People who are talented enough for this move to "click" for them have a great weapon in their arsenal. Personally I've been training over 10 years and never executed it even once successfully in sparring.

I am 5’10” and I have tai otoshi as my main throw. I’ve been working on it since I started judo, and it is still very hard to execute. I make it work by constantly moving and mixing it with my ashi-waza. The sad truth is that I now use a left sided tai otoshi to trick my opponents and it’s pretty sloppy compared to my right sided one, but it has been bringing me much better results…

thank you, I am just starting to teach my own class (BJJ class, yes we do throws lol) and I swear the students are either 5"6 or 6"5. this will help me cater to their needs.

im kinda tall 6 foot but i love seio nage and sode kind style. I prefer over uchimata and hari, which probably better for me since i have super long legs

Back in the day martial arts were all about length because Karate, Kung Fu, kickboxing, Taekwondo and God help you point karate we're your primary opportunities to compete however Judo was absolutely perfect for short stocky athletes and opened up martial arts training to a demographic that were hard-pressed to find something they could compete in before however when they took away leg attacks they destroyed short man Judo... now tall thin athletes have a major advantage. When you look at freestyle versus Greco-Roman wrestling Greco-Roman athletes always Trend taller, this is especially noticeable in the heavyweight division
@itsreihart9865
@itsreihart9865 8 ай бұрын
Yes freestyle wrestling however tends to have more short guys but in general being taller is an advantage. Weight matters more than height which is why a strong short guy will dominate a less athletic tall person but being tall & having a long reach is rarely ever a disadvantage.
@Howleebra
@Howleebra 8 ай бұрын
@@itsreihart9865 I think it's arguable that short people have an actual advantage in wrestling and freestyle Judo if anything it's the great equalizer... mixed martial arts is the ultimate equalizer especially Asian rules... when you completely remove lower body attacks taller athletes have a massive advantage especially in Lapel Sports where they can grip up and wear you down leaning down not worried at all about those long vulnerable legs
