This was my Mom's favorite song, she had it on a 45 record. She used to play it on Saturdays when we were cleaning the house. Sometimes she would listen to it over and over. This song describes my Mom's life. Especially when it came out in 1975. She was always in such turmoil. My father did not make her life easy. Mom passed away in August of 2023. This song still haunts me when I hear it. 😔♥♥♥

In January of 1975, my dear Father took a train from Ft. Lauderdale to Gainesville in Florida just to visit me. I was in graduate school at the University of Florida. On a very cold night I was invited to a party after the Art Opening of a great friend and mentor of mine twenty years my senior. A roaring fire leant two kinds of warmth to an atmosphere of caring folks. This song was on repeat, adding another perfect layer to this feeling of affection that embraced us all. My Father would pass away eighteen years later, but he often spoke of that evening. He was a very sentimental man. His wife of 24 years, my mother, had died of breast cancer at age 43 in 1969. Although he never spoke about it, I am certain it brought memories of her to him. She too was a beautiful vocalist, one that Big Bands that came through the WWII industrial town of Bridgeport, Connecticut where they and I were born, were so impressed, some tried to lure her to come on tour with them. But she had met my Dad by that time, and turned down those chances to raise five children. I know he along with me was very happy he made that trip.

The Meaning of This Song (backstory) - This is a song based on a musical "A Little Night Music" by Stephen Sondheim. In the musical, the woman Desiree Armfeldt is having an affair with a married man Fredrik. But he doesn't want to continue the relationship and instead wants to be committed to his young wife Anne. Feeling rejected and heartbroken, Desiree sings "Send in the Clowns" which is what they would do in the circus in the old days to distract the audience from a failed performance (i.e., some tragedy happened like someone on the trapeze fell, or a lion attacked a handler, etc). And so she sings "Send in the Clowns" to distract her from the tragedy that is her life.

I first saw and heard Judy around 1963 when I was 14 years-old. She and Tom Paxton I think it was, were making their rounds on Cape Cod, (and Massachusetts) at that time. They put on a nice little show at the old National Guard Armory, (which is now a court house) on Jones Road in Falmouth, Ma. Judy was absolutely fabulous that night! I can still see her on that little stage wearing a white dress and high heels. She had the most beautiful, big blue eyes I have ever witnessed. I've been a huge fan of hers all these years and my favorite song sung by her is, "Both Sides Now".

The death of Sondheim brought me here. It's a deeply beautiful arrangement and vocal. I know it was for the Muppets (my deep love) - but I wish that they had used the clowns differently. It could have been very beautiful if they had used the clowns more delicately - blurred perhaps and certainly slower.

@@rodneyfrost1674 Wow, you people are really pathetic. With all due respect, it is not just a matter of your aesthetic predilections. We each of course have our own and it varies from person to person. Rather it is quite concerning with regards to understanding what you are looking at and your interpretative capacity. It is actually quite perfect, that is complimentary. It has to do with ineffably deep and voiceless hurt, sarcasm and parody.

I believe the interpretation of this song is rather distorted. Does the song really mean, "clowns" as such? It's a metaphor and this version showing clowns is very literal in its meaning. In fact, it cheapened the song. I'm sure the author or lyricist and composer are giggling, if not smirking, for the rather literal interpretation. Just saying.
