I lived on 80th St. in NYC during 1969 and saw Judy at the funeral home. She was tiny. I remember the peachy shade of lipstick she wore. She had on a blue grey dress that was more grey than blue. A friend said there was glass on her coffin, but I remember there was no glass.

I think she looks so precious in this footage because she doesn't have all the heavy eye makeup on. Those big beautiful Garland eyes are more noticeable and she looks so cute in her black outfit and shoes. I wish we had more footage of her just being herself offstage. She will always be the greatest to me!

How many times have we seen this?, a young person with real talent comes along and makes it big just to have bad habits and age take it all away. The first time I watched The Wizard Of Oz(as a young boy) I thought she was beautiful, I'll always think of her in that way. Sad thing about life is we can't keep a person from destroying themselves. Of all the celebs I would have liked to have met her, she was a very real talent for sure.

someone below asks, was she drunk..absolutely NOT. She just woke up. Showtime is another matter. I love this clip, i find it endears her to me even more. I can't watch the show(except for the finale, taped days later). She clearly is "off center" to say the least, not at all like here, focused, present, herself, even getting a giggle out of the ponderous lyric...
@mickyfinn44668 жыл бұрын
I read that she was so worried about being on time for the rehearsal that she spent the previous night in her trailer on the studio lot. If true, she probably had just rolled out of bed. Elsewhere on youtube, someone has cut this footage together with the number as broadcast. Check it out. The contrast is astounding.

Even though there was very little effort and it was a rehearsal, her voice is fantastic. The industry she grew up in completely destroyed her, along with the vile people that bled her dry of her money. Poor Judy always looked so vulnerable but still came across as such a lovely lady. She was taken far too soon and the world was then deprived of her wonderful talent ❤️

1. She is "marking" - even today this common when doing run-throughs or a rehearsal that is for any element OTHER than the singer. NOT the "Cue to Cue" nightmare but very specifically; how long is the show putting this together end to end? Big clue is the gentleman immediately standing - "applause applause' etc - - - this may be for "timing" from set to set, changes, sequence length, and the orchestra track layer. I have been in rehearsals like this that will go all day while they run technical elements again and again - - they need the singer as she fills a required gap......but she doesn't need to trash her voice singing all day; she will not. INTERESTING NOTE: - - While marking she still brings the pianissimo and then FULL VOICE after the bridge into ending. She immediately pulls back but she must do this to to maintain the 'muscle memory' when she is actually performing. I did an opera with a soprano who spent 2 weeks of rehearsal sick and the 2 weeks recovering her voice. Week five we started doing some full sequence run-through of 20 minutes at a time, she couldn't sing. She had marked at one volume SOFT for 4 weeks. She struggled to overcome that and perform FULL VOICE, to mixed reviews. So Judy is TOP NOTCH PROFESSIONAL and although 'marking' she still is maintaining the muscle memory that will allow her to PERFORM without concentrating on singing; effortless habit. She has to move as well as she may have dance steps or blocking - - blocking is also 'marked' but again; she is building muscle memory for full performance. 2. SPECTACULAR POINT HERE: - - no 'autotune' - she is singing ON PITCH in a 'MARKED' runthrough! 3. POINTS OF FAILURE: One portion that bothered me was the final held note. She did not have the gas for that. She didn't mark she just stopped singing. She could muscle through everything else just fine - but that was out of scope. HOWEVER: gracefully pulled back rather than sing an ugly pitch. The other portion that bothered me were the sung consonants, in particular "N" with vowels in general closing in a diphthong to the final consonant. Yes; that's the style often used in "cabaret-style" of that era. Again though here - rather than 'marking' the breath support seemed to stop and the vibrato spun out of control. 'Closing a phrase' is very different from 'uncontrolled full stop'. Her life was a long series of abusive management and abusive life style that slowly diminished her until she was gone. ****But that woman could sing. You have friends that could sing like she did in this "marking" recording. Just remember: she has a volume, musicality and (to keep the gas metaphor) another 5 gears WAY beyond this sound. An incredible recording of her work process.****
