@Teflon65 That's complete rubbish. Firstly, they are not made of wax, they are made of shellac and will play back perfectly well using a diamond stylus like that one. Secondly, playing any post 30's shellac record on a Victrola will ruin it, that still needle will tear it to pieces. Thirdly, that player is perfectly suited for 78s it has the correct stylus with a conical tip, that means it can play lps and 78s perfectly with no damage. Keep spinning those 78s!

Well, actually, a needle designed for LPs will cause some damage to the bottom of a 78 groove. It's too thin to accurately follow the grooves of the 78 - it won't sit well - the angle is wrong. Great care, therefore, has to be taken to adjust the playing weight correctly. Having said that, some 78s, especially early ones, will have a different groove width, depending on the company that made it.
