Judy recorded this one in May 1943 just for the boys in the armed forces fighting overseas. Songs: Don't Get Around Much Anymore, But Not For Me, I Lost My Sugar In Salt Lake City, and Taking A Chance On Love. Judy sings on all of them! With Ivan Ditmars at the piano and special guest Johnny Mercer.

Hearing a young Garland with clarity of tone and control gives you a glimpse at really how good she was. Thanks

Such a vintage gem - the sound quality is excellent. Love the easy rapport between Judy and Johnny and their smooth harmonies. As always, her voice is magic.

Judy's voice from 1940 to 1950 was the voice I feel in love with.

What a wonderful selection of songs; they show her voice off so wonderfully, and I like to hear her singing with Johnny Mercer because of their history. Thank you, Buzz!!

Ah, Mr. Mercer, perennially hung up on Judy. Don’t blame him one bit. Wonderful picture of her, also.

I think that Judy Garland, Barbra Streisand, and Billie Holiday are the three greatest singers of popular music in recorded history. Now who am I? Nobody.

Streisand is great, but she’s not really my speed. Meanwhile, Judy and Billie are (in that order) my two very favorite singers ever.

@@joerhoden4919 I’ve loved Keely’s voice since I first heard it some years ago. She’s no Judy (nobody is) but she’s fantastic.

@@wildsmiley Many, many people have never even heard of Dorothy Keely/Keely Smith. I didn't know she existed until 2012 at age 46. I'm sure you've seen comment after comment on KZbin of people in awe of Miss Smith after hearing her for the first time. You have great taste in music,Wildsmiley. It's a disgrace how the studios drugged Judy and lead her to an early death. Richard Rhoden

Love how you can hear a little bit of Tennessee twang when she sings (like the word ‘dance.’) You can hear a little bit of that accent that came from her Dad. Really prominent when she sings and speaks in her younger years. Boy he would’ve been a great one to sit down and talk to you about Judy. Tragic she lost him so young. Wonderful recording. Thank you so much for your posts.

Hi Buzz, As usual you post wonderful Judy performances. Thank you. Also... I've never heard of recordings made only for the fighting forces in WW2. Did Judy make any others? Did other singers and musicians make them? Were they widely distributed? Were they given to individual soldiers ir were they given to tge service's broadcast units? Lots of questions for you, Buzz. I hope you have a few answers. Again, thanks for all of your posts. They are a joy to listen to. You are a hero!

Stephen: I don’t see an answer from Buzz, unusual. You’ve probably discovered the answer, but just in case here’s the little I know: Yes, Judy made many as did other singers and musicians. Many (most, I think) were called Command Performances, all on radio. If you put that and her name in “Search” on KZbin, you should get many of them.

Wonderful, though Mercer's minstrel-y rendition of I Lost My Sugar is a little hard to take in 2021.
