🎹 Just for the record... I had the great thrill of accompanying Judy for two hours when I was a Cabaret Singer and Pianist at a club in New York City called The Top Of The Town in the Shelton Towers Hotel. Judy got up and sang with me. I was 21 and a huge fan and I knew all of her songs and the keys she sang them in. It was an unforgettable night. (About a year before we lost her) 🎹

What a treat - and what a bittersweet reminder of how TV once presented such fabulous entertainment. Garland followed by Mary Martin and Noel Coward? All one can do is sigh… This video also backs my belief that Garland didn’t sing, she performed. Her gestures, her face, especially those eyes, were just as important as the voice.

Right!!! But the brilliance of Judy Garland’s talent is that even if you listen to her on recording a record or a tape, you still get the experience of this great entertainer. It’s more wonderful to see her but you still can hear the talent in her singing- and she tells a great story through her voice. She’s the greatest entertainer and she’s also the greatest storyteller the world has ever produced.

I remembering reading in a Judy biography that she had a lot of trouble getting through this show. But you would never know it here other than some electric nervousness that's actually pretty charming, and a flubbed line in Swannee. A bit plump - but much healthier looking than her drawn appearance 8 years later on her TV show in 1963/64. Judy should have done so much more TV - she just jumps off the screen - you want to hug her. Amazing than now billions can watch her brief perfomances on TV, preserved forever for all time.

As an interesting aside (as Buzz noted) Jack Cathcart conducted the orchestra here. Mr. Cathcart was married to Judy's eldest sister "Mary Jane" - later called "Suzanne," "Sue," or "Suzie." As the lead "Gumm Sister," Suzanne was well recalled as having "the sweetest personality" of the trio. Sue was born on September 24, 1915 - this September 24, 1955 broadcast marked her fortieth birthday - to the day.
