Nobody ever said she was ugly. She just didn't fit the narrow standard of film-star beauty of that period of time.
@ateneaessabia0399Ай бұрын
Let's see, I'm going to say something. Humble opinion. It's not that she's ugly, ugly. But the truth is that in 90% of the photos I have seen of her, she has an ugly face (in fact, she has a "mad bird" face. Her eyes look like they have been put into a Photoshop program and shaped. And not to mention his ears) But... in younger photos I do see that she was pretty. (Like in this video, which appears to be quite young)

She could really pull off that 'sad sack' bit so convincingly. She had the most expressive eyes. They reflected every mood. You could spend a decade at The Actor's Studio or Juilliard, but either you got it or you don't. Like Bogie said to her once, "You have more talent than anybody in this goddamned town."

This is one of my favorite numbers she sang in her early/post Oz MGM period. Roger wrote terrifically personalized numbers for her(and others) because he knew the woman. And how beautiful is this girl, who didn't think she was beautiful. I know a lot of people who, to me, are stunningly gorgeous(HELLOz?!) but got some really f-d up early messaging....Ttat face, with that voice, to me, at thjs moment in time for her, is absolutely perfect and so right.

Huge Judy fan. Thanks for sharing this clip. ... her ability to caress a ballad with her voice, make it her own, and share it is demonstrated here. Her phenomenal voice is equaled only by her amazing acting skills...and "ugly duckling"...I think not! Very pretty...those big brown eyes! And a song penned by her friend Roger Edens...the Jekyll and Hyde line is high-larious!

How on Earth could such a magnetically gorgeous girl have attracted such dismissive, even withering criticism of her looks? This, along with the rest of how she was mishandled by the people who should have nurtured her, remains one of studio-era Hollywood’s most aggravating puzzles.

Charming performance - and though a rather simple pop theme and melody, I can't imagine anything as lyrically complex and allusive coming out today, much less succeeding.
@melbapatti7 жыл бұрын
Michael Costa you're so correct. But what a shame people today can't "get" complex lyrics like these (or those of Ira or Cole). This song is infinitely clever, custom fit for Judy by Roger Edens and ranks up there with the Cole Porter and Ira/George Gershwin "clever" songs, in my opinion.
