Best quote about Judy Garland: "She didn't sing a song, she inhabited it." She was only 23 in 1945 !! Her voice carried a hundred years of emotion, pain, passion, and perfection. She was in a league by herself. And still is.

Her range, pitch, power- unmatched and unrivaled.. yes, she was in a class of her own back in her day, and the mark she left behind will never fade. She didn't just sing a song.. she took it, threw it up, threw it down, flipped it, and turnt it inside out! Ability and talent of her caliber is rare indeed..

An incredible voice, meshed with sensitivity and interpretive skills to know how to act a song and build it from quiet and introspection to powerful emotion. Singing isn't just about showing off your voice and wailing up and down scales and showing how long you can hold a high note, despite what those judges on American Idol and other shows keep encouraging. The contestants there always seem like they're trying to burst a blood vessel when they sing. It isn't pleasant.

Let's park the acting, the command, the technique, the truth. They're all a given. Let's consider for a moment the musician. She knows that this is a deathless classic. The fourth beat of the melodic phrases repeatedly up the emotional ante. She knows that, even on a fourth-beat word, such as 'the' or 'for', it's the key to unlock this great song's mounting intensity. She's not afraid to open those insognificant words up, on the vowel, in order to fill the sails for what follows. The musicians know that too, and she knows that they know, and what I find so very moving are her countless glances of gratitude, of humour even, of collusion, of ''Thank you, boys, for supporting me' which pepper this outstanding performance by an outstanding artist in what is, for me, her most outstanding performance. Thank you, KZbin, Alexandra, for putting this up.

Soon after Judy died a friend of hers - a comedian, I forget his name - was asked what was so special about her. "Judy Garland," he said, "was the greatest act of the twentieth century." He got it in one.

Best musical moment in the history of film. Torch singing may not hold a candle to opera or jazz, but this is the one exception. Transcendent.

+Mark Innocenzi I just watched it again and for me it always comes down to a couple of things. First, after she motions the trombone player over, we're watching a 4+ minute unbroken take. She's got to carry this scene by herself with no help from any editing tricks. Second, I'm always impressed by the sheer physicality of that performance. Notice how she starts out anchored to the piano. And then she starts to wander among the musicians--but on the first crescendo of the song she's back at the piano. In the meantime she's incredibly expressive with how she's using her hands and arms; great sweeping gestures, etc. And then when the song winds down and she's going to end up sitting down, notice how her hands are in a prayerful position. Its just absolutely magic.

Easily one of the best vocal performances ever recorded across all genres of all time. I know Judy Garland is looked at as old Hollywood royalty for her acting , but her vocal ability out stripped her acting easily. A power, only matched by Whitney Houston 30 years plus after her vocal peak. If your best singers list doesn’t include doesn’t include Judy Garland in at least the Top 10 of all time, I’m not paying you any attention....🗣Rolling Stone!

I just about fell over when I first saw the fully restored version of this movie before the studio hacked it to pieces. I believe it effectively cost her a well deserved Academy Award. She was only 32 during this filming. With that though came her deeper woman’s voice. Which I love especially in that little show stopper, The Man That Got Away. It’s perhaps one of my all time favorites, and out of her catalogue of songs, my absolute favorite of HERS! Man she knocked me off my feet with that number. I’ll never forget her! This is a true legend.

@@taylordowning2533 But I think some of the film was actually trashed, so there is no way to truly put the original back together. The "restoration" I saw had still photos to fill gaps where they had some audio, but the film visuals had been tossed in the trash. What a waste!

I remember when the restored version of this film, with added scenes that were originally cut, was released in the 1980s. I saw it twice with an audience and both times the audience in the theatre applauded, which doesn't happen often in a movie theatre. Judy could do that.
