Judy Garland - Smoke Gets In Your Eyes - The Judy Garland Show

January 17, 1964: Videotaping of both the dress rehearsal (from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.) and the final performance (from 9:00 to 10:30 p.m.) of "Episode Nineteen" of "The Judy Garland Show" at CBS Television City, Stage 43, Hollywood.
Judy's guests were Louis Jourdan, The Kirby Stone Four, and Ken Murray.
Judy sang: "San Francisco"; "Whispering" (with The Kirby Stone Four)"; "Paris Is A Lonely Town"; "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" (comedy version); "Children's Songs" medley (with Jourdan); "What'll I Do?" and a repeat performance of "Battle Hymn Of The Republic."
Judy also taped another segment with "Ken Murray and His Hollywood Home Movies" and an introduction to the "Glenn Miller Medley" dress rehearsal performance for the previous episode that was taped on Tuesday, January 14.
This episode was aired on February 2, 1964.

I love how somber she is from the end of the first song through the smoke and firefighters' entrance. She knew what was coming, and never gave up the gag. I've read she hated 'Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", and I'd bet she had a hand in this satire of it. Sharp, witty, and wickedly funny Judy!

Oh this is hilarious! Judy really was such a lovely comedienne. I don't think very many people gave her credit for having such a great sense of humor of having such great timing. Too many people love to paint Judy as this totally tragic figure who was so put upon by life. This is great to see a more light hearted side of Judy. Somehow, I highly suspect this was a truer Judy than the poor lost little waif lost in the world of Hollywood drugs and alcohol.

Funny number. Judy's the Star, of course, but all the firemen are hilarious too 😊. I love at the end how she stops the fireman till she's ready to get the chair 😊. Wonderful physical comedy. Marvelous Judy 💞...🪻🌿
