What if Susan Hayward had performed to Judy Garland's track instead of Margaret Whiting's? I've been asked to do this before, but I was never inspired until I found this great stereo version of the track. Now the scene (and the applause) finally make sense!

Judy was well aware of the scene and I'm sure she would have had a blast doing it and made sure fans knew it ahead of time so Patty Duke would live to see her 21st birthday. Too bad the director was such an absolute shit to her. Calling her in at 6:00 am and having her wait until 5:00 to call her on to the set. He treated her like the movie turned out. as directed..

She was paid half of what she would have received had she completed her role. She did not steal her wardrobe, the designer made her a gift of the costumes she chose to keep, realistically, no one else could have squeezed in them anyway. And according to a well-researched book, Judy, by Gerold Frank that came out in 1974, the song was supposed to have been redone by Judy, it was not the final take that would have ultimately been in the finished product. I'm grateful that she recorded the song and sang the hell out of it, and I am extremely glad that she was NOT in that film.

Actually, she really had a great voice until the end. Around '67 she was taking some kind of medication, so I've read, and it dried her throat and affected her singing. She was taken off the medication and her voice recovered. Too late, however, to save her life from her addiction, sadly.

I could not agree more with jeh500 more !! I always thought that song was just horrible, ( The work of Andre and Dory Previn). The combination of odd lyrics and a very difficult octave range made it impossible for even a quite talented singer to accomplish.. I cannot believe what Judy Garland did with that song. She took a literal piece of un-singable crap and made it astonishing... She was a true genius and talent (as proven especially by this song). She was noted for recording many of her songs in only one "take", not needing constant re-recording, Her talent was more than incredible, what a tragic loss when she died... I thought it was a boring, stupid and asinine song that was monotonous. It should have never been filmed, or if it was, should have been cut from the film. It has always bothered me watching that scene with her singing that boring song and wondering all the while, how does it fit in with "musical" that they are watching when it looks like she's on the Dean Martin show, the Ed Sullivan show or one of those shows that were so popular back then.
@Greg07623

Richard Beman It’s true, but I always felt that it was a bad song by intention. Andre Previn was way too talented to unintentionally compose such an un-vocal melody. The song accentuated the unfairness of the plot and supported the underlying message of the film that show business isn’t about what’s fair.

@@zzzbbbooo you and many other people obviously underestimate the unlimited talent of Judy Garland. There was absolutely nothing she couldn't do and the surface of her unlimited talent was only barely scratched during her short lifetime. She was brilliant in "judgment at Nuremberg" and was nominated again for her brilliant acting in this serious and intriguing heart felt drama. Who could have ever guessed that Judy Garland had that kind of untapped talent to be able to portray such a deep , heart rending emotional role? Everyone already knows her iconic and brilliant acting in "a star is born" and how she was robbed of her absolutely deserved oscar. Her last film "I could go on singing" actually proved she could play a somewhat mean and bitch of a person when the character called for it to be played. I wonder if Hayward was actually singing the words to try and make the dubbing look more convincing. In any case, she forgot to breathe like a singer. She waved her arms around and tossed her shoulders, but that rib cage isn't moving. When Garland or any other singer belts out a tune, they pump their lungs like a bellows and often break a sweat. Though if Hayward were to imitate that breathing without actually trying to sing, she would probably fall over from the hyperventilation. I think I saw a video clip of Garland doing a screen test in that same dress.

It was a mistake to have thought about her being in the film cause her forte was not playing bitches.It did not fit her, plus she was taking too many drugs and look too sickly ot play the part, Susan Hayward did justice to the role.She knew how to play the bitch.A she was good at it.

I loved Judy, but if this is what she sounded like at the time then it's a good thing she didn't do it. She was great on her TV SHOW which was a little earlier than the film. You can tell by interviews she did about doing the film that she had lost alot of weight and it seemed like she was on her way down. It's a shame, because she was the best there was on stage at one time.

Yes. I've read she hated the dialogue, "I can't say these words!" she allegedly said. Besides the way she was treated, I really think she didn't want to make this trashy movie. It was beneath her.
