Have been searching for a version of Judy singing 'The Man I Love' for a long time ... & I finally found it. My heart melted when I heard it & I think yours will,too.
Not only is this recording exceptionally rare - I'm sure that many have never heard Judy sing this beautiful ballad - but the quality of the audio has surprisingly, wonderfully survived the passing years.
How rare? ... I know Judy performed 'The Man I Love' a few times live, in concert. But ... in all my searching I have never found a studio recording. I'm sure there are many people more knowledgeable than I who can correct my error if it is needed.
This, too, is a live recording. The information is a bit sketchy ... possibly from an August 28, 1943 radio command performance ... or, another date - March 5, 1944, venue unknown.
The visual experience I added to this audio is a collection of clips & photos of Judy with her husbands. I know there are alot of opinions about each of them ... I just accept the experience Judy had loving them at some place & time in her life.
'The Man I Love' is a popular standard, with music by George Gershwin and lyrics by his brother Ira.
Some day he'll come along,
The man I love;
And he'll be big and strong,
The man I love;
And when he comes my way,
I'll do my best to make him stay.
He'll look at me and smile--
I'll understand;
And in a little while
He'll take my hand;
And though it seems absurd,
I know we both won't say a word.
Maybe I shall meet him Sunday,
Maybe Monday -- maybe not;
Still I'm sure to meet him one day--
Maybe Tuesday
Will be my good news day.
He'll build a little home
Just meant for two;
From which I'll never roam--
Who would? Would you?
And so all else above,
I'm waiting for
The man I love!

I agree with the poster below who said that more attention should be paid to her early recordings--much of what has been found from her radio appearances is simply stunning. And unfortunately a great deal of that work she never repeated.

Gorgeous. The ways he slows down in the bridge... brilliant. Too bad audio quality isn't better.

Dizzying. I love the relatively simple arrangement - too many of them are frothy or schmaltzy, when this is an almost tragic song. If not for that distortion, it would be perfect, but it is still the best I can find on KZbin (since they don't have Maureen McGovern's superb version from the Naughty Baby album). The lyrics are poignant, but it is those descending chords, the sinking deeper and deeper, that makes it so sad. It's about the loneliness of being alive.

Just a wonderful performance. It's a hard song to to do well. The melody is very different. I'm sure if I knew more, or even something, about music I could elaborate on that. Her ability to match that melody is just wonderful. Thank you for posting this.

There was no woman more beautiful in Hollywood than the 20 year old Judy Garland. If they hadn’t screwed up her metabolism with the pills and cigarettes, she would have been able to keep her phenomenal figure until old age. Her lack of sleep and lack of proper eating habits were a huge reason her body and mind began to decline in her mid to late 20’s.

Knew she sang it in her very 1st concert on 7/10/1943 in Robin Hood Dell, PA. Never heard this radio rendition, Thanks Only other is her sad, vocally all too late '68 live try in Boston. I have to add hers to Jane Froman's & Gogi Grant's as all the versions the world needs of this song. To hear Garland render it while she still used the restraint & tenderness she did in the 40s. Love all the decades of Garland but post 54 she gave in more to belting for money notes in most songs. Beautiful.

I agree. I thought I was the only one who preferred early Garland. As you said, after she left MGM her style became too bombastic.

EXCEPT, when she sang ballads. Her ballads continued to be deep dives into the song. Her ballad singing was sublime well into the 1960’s. And I for one am gratified by her evolving performance style. We’re so lucky to have her movie and radio work from the 1940’s- highly disciplined and gorgeous; as well as her work from the 1950’s onward- which was yes, sometimes bombastic, but also I think it was an exploration of her power and the electrical exchange with her audience. Thank god for Judy Garland. She has brought joy to so many people. An incredible artist and genius.

@@deuxjournalistes2993 I have the same feelings about Liza Minnelli. Most of the time, I find her style too bombastic, but when she sings ballads or torch, she plays her voice like a Stradivarius violin. A good example is “You are My Lucky Star” which is on KZbin.

You have to admit, as good as she is, this is one song her daughter Liza does better in New York, NY. Probably the only song her daughter does better. Course, by that time, Liza was a couple of years older.
