No matter the condition of her voice, she gave 100% and touched hearts with her own in a way no one else could or ever will.

The raspiness is partly due to distortion on the recording on higher volume, I think.

Judy will always be the most remarkable talent this world has ever known. I am so tired the reading the nonsense of the tabloids that have been written about her “tragic” life. She did not think it was so tragic, only the people in it who had to sensationalize every aspect of her life for $ were the tragedy. Any person who ever took the time to listen to her side, to watch her movies, films, her interviews, would be able to figure it all out. Well it’s out there to do it. If people would think and watch her films and listen to the interviews, they could determine the truth from the lies. As Judy herself explained that if she was so messed up on drugs how could she get out and work every day. She worked for 47 years straight. Sometimes she needed a rest or got the flu or needed some medical attention but the media made it sound like she was racked out someplace or other on drugs. Sure she might have been late on the set some times, which they also blew out of proportion, but she shortened the day of shooting because she was so darn talented and prepared that it eliminated a lot of retakes. I’m sorry if I sound like a soap box but I feel that someone has to be her voice and get people to take time to cipher the real Judy from all of the deception. Here it is in a nutshell. She was not an alcoholic, her autopsy tells us, she hadn’t taken anymore amp hid amines than she was used to, the pills bottles were still full at time of death, that’s documented. She was a loving mother, and a good one and did as right by her kids as she could. She was the bread winner and had to keep working while everyone else= business advisors and managers, yes even some husbands, out spending everything she made, you name it, it was done. She was everyone’s meal ticket and there was nothing left for her and her kids. Before anyone makes assumptions about Judy, do the research and use your heads and think about it.!!!!

Thank you so much for that comment! I have read a lot and I agree that she had a tremendous amount of joy in her life, even though there were some hard times. Everyone has those, and many people with plenty of money are truly miserable. And most artists would accept years of unhappiness and hard times to have had just a moment of Judy’s life--to have had that kind of talent and success--to have known that the best entertainment artists in the country all agreed that SHE was the best, to have experienced “the best night in entertainment history” at Carnegie Hall just 8 years before she died. The first time I heard this performance, I have to say it broke my heart, because I had just heard her sing it in A STAR IS BORN. I’m so glad I listened again today, because I found it absolutely lovely, poignant, beautiful. As another commenter said, “on her worst day, she was still better than anyone else.”

Her last months were actually quite good in performance. Her voice is clear, clean and strong, although she was very ill. Better than ''66-67 when her voice was sometimes dry, attributed to her meds. This is actually quite nice, very intimate, and very sad, as it's the last time she sang it. Great artists often die young, unfortunately.
