Thank you, Judy! I heard your cast-on method mentioned in a video by Elise Rose Crochet, so I went hunting on youtube. I initially found several videos by other content providers and watched them all, but was left feeling somewhat confused. Today I was delighted when your video happened to pop up in my feed, as if by "magic." After watching it, I have a much better grasp of what I'm doing and why it works. Nothing like getting it straight from the source! Terrific video! I've been using your technique for some time but had never seen your video. I like your point about not worrying which direction you wrap the yarn and about the fact that the cast-on includes the first knit row. After you pulled the needle out to show that, you could have just put those loops back on the needle rather than starting over. Anyway, the video is very clear , and I love it that there's no background noise (including music) or other distractions.

Magic Indeed! I am so excited to have found this cast-on. I have always used waste yarn for my provisional cast-on, but as I've gotten older, have had trouble picking up the stitches from the waste yarn when using small needles and fine yarn due to difficulty seeing the tiny stitches, but now they're already on the needle and ready to go! Awesome!

There is honestly no tech guru in this world who matches up to the skill and genius of knitters coming up with simpler, better, cleaner ways to do things. Steve Jobs and Elon Musk combined can't match the level of ingenuity!! Knitters have been out here for centuries mutzing around with waste yarn, short rows, kitchener stitches, provisional this and that, and Judy Becker just sees another way. JMCO was invented as a cast-on for toe-up socks. But many patterns start with a provisional cast-on or a closed circle. Ravelry is an excellent place to look at patterns that use different techniques.

Thanks so much for this video! It's incredibly helpful! I'm having difficulty understanding a slipper pattern that says "You are now working flat, back and forth. TURN work instead of continuing in the round. The wrong side (WS) is the inside of the slipper facing out, and the right side (RS) is the outside of the slipper facing in. Row 1 (WS): First needle: Very loosely (as this edge needs to stretch) P1, K to end of first needle. On the second needle: K to last st, P1. TURN Row 2 (RS): First needle: Loosely K1, K2tog, K to last 3 sts on the first needle, SSK, K1. On the second needle: K1, K2tog, K to last 3 sts, SSK, K1. TURN 4 sts decreased." I understand how to just work one needle but not how to work them individually without the yarn connecting them (which to my understanding it working in the round). Any tips? Do I need to just work one needle at a time? I'm totally lost and my searches for help are coming up with nothing. Thanks again for your awesome video!

You can go many places! JMCO started as an invisible cast-on for toe-up socks. But it's a provisional cast-on and can be substituted anywhere that you need one. I am having a hard time AFTER the cast on. Once I move to the pattern, it seems I am just making a flat piece with a needle at each end instead of a tube. Any idea what I am doing wrong? Thanks! Loved the video very clear instructions!

There will always be a 1/2-stitch jog between the two portions of your ribbing if you knit ribbing going both directions from a provisional cast-on. I'm not sure what you are trying to achieve. If there is a central part that is ribbed with non-ribbed fabric to either side, plan the cast-on so that it falls at one edge of the ribbing. That way you will only be ribbing in one direction and you will avoid the 1/2-stitch jog. If your ribbing will be at the edge, it's possible to use JMCO as a tubular cast-on. Lorilee Beltman has a great video on this technique here: Tubular Cast on Using Judy's Magic Cast on, from Lorilee. She uses it to start 1x1 ribbing. For 2x2 ribbing, knit an extra round before joining and starting the ribbing. Hope this helps!

ATTENTION BEGINNER KNITTERS. I’m a beginner too--starting my first pair of socks. I watched this cast-on video and it’s VERY MEAN and will have you questioning your sanity. Here’s why: Judy spends the first 7 minutes explaining a few things. First, you drape the yarn over the top needle so that the tail is in the front, working yarn in the back. Then you pick up the yarn so that the tail is over your pointer finger, and the working yarn is over your thumb, basically twisting the yarn. Cool, no issues here. At 7:00 minute mark, Judy starts her cast-on showing this. You get to see the whole cast-on, with all the stitches on the bottom needle being made by the tail yarn, and all the stitches on the top needle being made by the working yarn. It’s super easy to see because of the rainbow yarn she’s using. Now, there is a cut in the video just after 8:10 and suddenly, AS JUDY IS EXPLAINING WHAT TO DO WITH THE TAIL WHEN YOU TURN YOUR WORK, her tail is attached to the top stitches, and the working yarn is attached to the bottom stitches. You probably didn’t notice, because Judy made sure to realign her rainbow yarn so that yellow and blue stitches are showing still. Friends, do you know how long I struggled to understand what to do with the tail, why I wasn’t able to turn my work the way she did? This was a very mean trick. If you are a beginner, use the Turkish Cast On instead; Andrea Mowry has a great video on it.

If you are going to knit using the magic loop method, then yes you would cast on using the two tips attached to a single cable. I used the two circular needles method in my video to make it easier to see what was happening.

How I stumbled on this is a miracle, I was looking at a mermaid tail pattern that mentioned your magic method. I'm happy to have found it before I started any socks. I've been knitting for nearly 60 years and have tried various methods casting on, I also gave a very logical brain but I am in awe of your inventiveness in this magic method. There are a couple of things which confuse me, (my brain is not what it used to be) Firstly, I noticed that you sometimes cast on from the outside and sometimes from the middle. I couldn't see if there was a pattern to this or a reason. When you were knitting from the cast on stitches you mentioned that you were knitting into the back of the stitch depending on how the stitches were cast on. I'm a little OCD and my question is this: Can I cast on using this method coming from the outside all the time (or from the middle all the time) and will my cast on still be entwined? As to the purl/plain side of the cast on, does it matter which side we use or is it just aesthetics. It obviously looks neater on the plain side, unless you are using stocking stitch as a feature for the toe. Thanks again, I'm going to look at your other videos.

You may cast on consistently in either direction. I did both to show that direction only changes the stitch mount -- that is, the leading leg of the stitch may be either in front of the needle or behind it, depending on which direction the stitch was cast on. Just be sure to always knit the stitch through the middle. The cast on actually creates a row of knitting. You should have the purl side up if you are knitting in stockinette (stocking) stitch. You should have the knit side up if you are knitting in garter stitch. If you do the opposite, you will end up with one row that's "off."

I would really, really like to know your thought process for inventing this! You must be very gifted spatially. Could you use this to make a neat edge on a hat knit in the round? I think maybe knitting on the two needles, joining each and then collapsing onto one double needle? Does that sound like it would work? Do you think there is a better method. I'm just really frustrated with the patterns I see. The cast on ribbing looks so sloppy and I'd like a thicker beginning. Thank you for showing this!!!!

Lorilee Beltman has a wonderful video showing how to use JMCO with a tubular cast on. You can find her video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f4Wwao2lmdNgi80 It's a little tricky to do in the round, but you could do the first bit straight, until you had the stitches on one needle, and then join and begin working in the round. You would have a tiny place to sew up during finishing.

If you leave out the last stitch in the instruction -- or cast on one more stitch after the last one, depending on how you look at it -- then you will have an odd number. But be careful that's what your pattern really requires. Read ahead to see the steps after the cast on. If you are using JMCO as a provisional cast on, most patterns -- but not all -- need an equal number of stitches going each direction. If you are using JMCO as the base for a tubular cast on, then an odd number of stitches might be what you need. Does your pattern need 27 stitches on each side or 27 stitches total? If it's 27 stitches on each side, then you'd cast on 54 total stitches.
