Perfectly said. People always seem to WANT her messed up. So they can wallow in poor Judy. Besides, I am one who thinks the alcoholism thing is a bit overstated. I have been around alcoholics a lot in my life and when you are a for real alcoholic it's an everyday thing, and she doesn't look or act like an alcoholic. At least not like the many I've known.

I see that someone mentioned pills. It must also be borne in mind that she was a high octane performer who always gave 105%. She sang this song, that's entertainment, (at the famous Carnegie Hall concert), with the same exuberance as she shows here. Another couple of examples are when she performed with her daughter Liza on her TV show and with Donald O'Connor, also on the TV show.

I see a couple of comments re pills and that she seems drunk. As a rule she did not drink much before a performance only after or privately. Judy was very high strung with or without pills. She had been so accustomed to taking something it was second nature. It began as child actress. Her mother and the studio were responsible. The mentality was if there was something wrong it could be fixed with a pill something that became very much part of and still is in American culture unfortunately.

She was known in her youth as MGM’s proponent of swing. They dusted off “you made me love you“ and she made it swing. One of her biggest hits from that era was “Swing, Mr. Mendelssohn, Swing.” She was always the standard bearer and progressive voice for popular songs. Sold a ton of albums. She never stopped learning new songs as well, for example “As Long As He Needs Me” from OLIVER!

i was watching a clip with dean martin, Judy garland, and frank Sinatra. it was Judye's turn to sing. She was doped or drunk and frank whispered the words to her. It didn't matter, drunk or sober she blew both of them away and sang better than both. In fact the only two women that Frank was kind of jealous of, was Judy Garland and Ella Fitzgerald, that he mentioned in his autobiography. in fact Judy was on stage and it must of been her peak, she was magnificent. Frank was there, the audience wanted Frank to goon. He said are you kidding, and try to follow that act. No as much as I love Frank's voice and he is the best male voice, Judy could blow him away singing.

At that point in her life I don't believe she was on anything or drinking. She was in the midst of her comeback after almost dying in 1959. And she was allowed two classes of wine per day, and that was it. That's why she was still a tad overweight. Besides it was tv, they would have stop shooting and start over. Plus CBS never would have signed her if she was drinking to excess.
