I'm a new painter and I started mixing colors this way instinctively. I also sometimes paint over an entire dry acrylic painting with white paint and water, then scrub it off quickly with a paper towel to mute the colors even more.

For glazing I have been using a Resene product called Paint Effects which seems to be just a binder with no pigment. It is quite fluid but has more body than water or air brush medium and dries matt. I mix it with acrylic paint for transparent layers that are a little thicker than the usual glaze - I can add 4 or 5 layers that will still show. I was using acrylic medium but the only fluid one I could get was glossy which wasn't what I wanted. Just in case anyone is interested 🙂 Good video, very useful about the colour mixing.

This is my first viewing of this particular video for me Judy but still so relevant! I am still learning about colour mixing (very much a novice in this area lol - I am primarily self taught bar some portfolio courses and community projects). This is a great tutorial Judy and I will definitely save it and watch it again. So thank you for posting ❤

Fantastic video. So informative! Please can you tell me about the ‘color mixer’ brush and the upright tool you use for making lines? I’ve tried to use a ruler for those straight edges and it is seriously messy. Thank you so much for your instruction and inspiration Judy.
@judywoodsart Жыл бұрын
The Colour Shaper is like a brush but it has a rubber edge rather than bristles - great for moving the paint around. A painters straight edge is what I use for the lines - available at hardware stores or paint shops.

Thank you for this great video Judy. I am fairly new to mediums and was wondering do you have a video or pdf on the purposes of the different mediums i:e can you use a pouring medium or the difference between that and a glazing medium?
@judywoodsart Жыл бұрын
Go to the Golden website and you'll see they have all that covered for you.

Great tutorial, Judy. I have been wondering about airbrush medium. It worked well here and was preferable to watering-down glazing medium. Do you think it could be used to mimic inks? Trying to not purchase too many supplies. Thanks for this video.
@judywoodsart Жыл бұрын
Well you can add pigment to it so I think it's worth experimenting.
@senndango Жыл бұрын
@@judywoodsart why did you switch to an airbrush medium rather than water?
@blackreazor Жыл бұрын
@@senndangobecause water will thin down the polymer that binds the pigment. So you can opt to use a thinner version of the same polymer whiout compromising the paint structure
@carynpercell89795 ай бұрын
Also what is the difference in the airbrush medium vs glazing medium if using it for glazing purposes?
@judywoodsart3 ай бұрын
Airbrush medium is thinner, runnier.

I just tried this exercise and what a big mess it came to !!! I'm having so much trouble just mixing the colors on my palette without creating a big mess quickly of all the colors mixing together & then I don't have the room to keep mixing new colors without the others getting in the way . Do you clean your palette knife between the mixing ? Im getting blobs & my piece did not come out muted & light at all! Plus the paint dried very quickly on my palette although I had wet paper towels under it . I am so frustrated & feel like I can't get it . I used the exact colors you used . I guess that's the difference between an experienced, talented artist & me 😢 Any tutorials on slowly just mixing on a palette would help me so much. It looks so easy when you do it . I feel like such a failure ...

OH no!! Don't be downhearted - you'll get there. I'll do a video just for you on how I mix colours and use my palette. Stay tuned!

After a few minutes i realised you were using a water based paint, like acrylic. I use oils so glazing using a water base is not suitable. I think you should change your title to explain what medium you are using.
