The amazing professional Boris Karloff, who performed in so many more films before he even saw Frankenstein as a script. He was always excellent to watch

He was in a number of silent films, some of which can be found on YT.

A wonderful put down spoken by one lady about another: "Ah, Lady Clifford! What a fine figure she makes! Her early cabaret training has stood her in good stead." Cattiness with class.

Note the gentleness with which Boris covers the nurse's mouth in the scene where she learns the syringe contained poison. He was a consummate performer, a troupe player in the very best sense of the word.

Lots of actors can play a gentleman, but Karloff was a gentleman who could act.

I remember seeing a Bugs Bunny cartoon where he comes across a mad scientist, the voice of Boris Karloff. I remember the line" Now be a cooperative rabbit, and let me have your brain."😅

To clarify for those of you who seem to be confused, in the original Frankenstein movie, Colin Clive plays Dr. Frankenstein and Boris Karloff portrays Frankenstein's Monster, both archetypal characters from the mind of Mary Shelly as part of a bet w/Dracula author B. Stoker.
@scarygary-qq1pj4 күн бұрын
In the comic "The Far Side" by Gary Larson, the monster was named Maurice.🤣

I enjoyed this quota quickie from Wardour and Boris excels so much you almost want him to get away with it. The film improves as it goes along building tension along the way and all around the hour mark. Hollywood could learn something from these British filmmakers with their turgid filmmaking.

Poor quality print, but what a treat it is too see this often forgotten Karloff classic, one of the few not in my collection. Boris is typically fine, but the rest of the cast and the film in general leave something to be desired. Still a poor Boris film is better than many other actors' best. The grand master here stars in what was the first of his many so-called mad doctor portrayals of the late 30's and '40's. Was Mr. Karloff type cast? Not anymore than James Cagney and Edward G. Robinson were in gangster films or John Wayne was in westerns. I think the thing that seem to escape most people's grasp was that no matter how many villainous parts B. K. played he never played them the same way, giving us film lovers an idea of what a truly versatile actor really was. And when the theatre and television came calling, Boris was given the chance to broaden his range even further. His kind is truly missed today!!

+mxylpx How nice!! Sara is so awesome. I was so lucky to be able to correspond with her a few years back. That recording in general, although not as popular as the original cast recording of the Mary Martin production, is quite good. But Boris must have been superb in the role and makes the recording with Jean Arthur a real classic. He could play any kind of role. And BTW, I've since acquired a copy of JUGGERNAUT, much my delight. Thanks for your kind words.

Such was the case for actors who played in horror movies until the '70s. Many agents didn't want their clients to accept horror film roles for that reason.

He went on to a number of other roles,. And btw, in Frankenstein, Karloff played The Monster, not Dr. Frankenstein.

But he was able to break free from time to time. One great example was his playing a Chinese detective (Mr. Wong) in 5 movies from 1938-40.

I really like the Mr. Wong films. Sure, it was yellowface, but at least it wasn’t Charlie Chan style ridiculous faux-Oriental style. Wong was always a westernized gentleman wearing a suit with a flower in his buttonhole and not given to utter fake Chinese aphorisms.
