I would say if Juice finds microbial life, it wouldn't be the find of the century, but rather the find of history.
@christineshotton824 Жыл бұрын
It would certainly be a fundamentally important discovery; even more so if life on one of the Jovian moons has a different chemistry than life on Earth. Life that is not based on DNA/RNA would strongly argue for independent development of life, rather than cross contamination via impact events.

@Rob You'd be surprised how much Americans use metric. I'm fairly certain nasa uses metric for just about everything, and translates to Imperial during announcements. In my physics classes and science classes, it was almost entirely the metric system.

I've been waiting for these two missions since the 1970's when the Voyager probes truly revealed the nature of these moons. The Jovian system has been one of my most intense areas of interest and study, and even as a young teenager in the mid 70's I had speculated that Io had active volcanoes. My science teacher at the time told me I was dreaming. Anyway, now my hope is that I live long enough to see the results of both these missions.

They've shown that all it takes to create rna is liquid water and volcanic rock. Seeing that both should be found on these moons is so intriguing to me. Billions of years of trial and error means it's highly likely that these molecules could have found a way. If self replicating things that use their environment for energy needs are found it would open up a whole new realm of scientific studies.

JUICE is 'more interested' of Europa's siblings among the Galilean moons, as it started as part of a dual probe Laplace mission, in which a NASA probe would have gotten the sexier Europa and Io as it targets, with Callisto and Ganymede left for ESA. Other space agencies were supposed to be involved, with Roskosmos possibly contributing a Ganymede lander. But then NASA walked out (third Jupiter mission it abandoned after Galileo's success) and ESA's part was salvaged to become JUICE.

Question: Say there is microbial life on the Jovian Moons. With the confirmation of Extra-Terrestial life, will scientists doing SETI through radio or whatever, will they be more open to any potential candidate? Instead of something that very clearly to an untrained me looks more like life than some natural process I can come up with and they say it's cosmic rays interacting with an interstellar cloud of hydrogen or something, they send a signal right back at any stars in that area.

Callisto offers the most promise for future manned missions to the the Jupiter system. Callisto is situated outside of the dangerous radiation belt of Jupiter and could serve as a perfect base for rovers on the surface of the other moons. A rover on Europa or Ganyemede could be controlled from Callisto in very close to real time with no danger of radiation. Callisto would also be a perfect jump off spot to the outer Solar System.
