The problem with the game is primarily the exploration, I mean POIs that are identical in EVERY way, all assets in the exact same place and all enemies doing and saying the exact same things, cheapens the experience of the rest of the game and throws a wrench into the immersion. It is the thing that needs to be fixed.

Yeah, there is the Bedlam mod to mix up the enemies at least. I know even games back in the day like the original Tenchu knew to have several layouts for its levels. It wouldn't be too hard to have more spawn points in a PoI than will be used at a given time and then have a procedural generator roll up some randomness. You just have to keep the bosses static so that they work with the Radiant quest system.

Cyberpunk 2.0 patch is probably the most impactful patch ever. Gameplay mechanics are finally working properly and everything just clicks, it's a very fun game to play right now. Starfield likely won't make such comeback, primarily because of the lack of the gaming world you could explore and traverse, we don't count proceduraly generated planets as such. Also the lackluster lore severly cripples an urge to return to the game.

The buggy doesn't really work. You drive off, then you get off the location and you need to go back to town. You can't fast travel in the vehicle, so you leave it behind. I have no doubt that Shattered Space was cut content. I think what gripes me is that on top of it being cut content they reused assets, like the "scary phase monster" that is a creature we've seen innumerable times on other planets. The "clutter" was the same as everywhere else in the game, few new armor sets and weapons-there was nothing that made Shattered Space feel like anything new. It being so short and overpriced just added insult to injury. Shattered Space should have been a companion quest.

There are a wealth of passionate video essays detailing the myriad failings of Starfield and the DLC... none of them mention the rover. At this point it's just undeniable that Bethesda has trapped themselves in an echo chamber where they refuse to hear even the most well-intentioned constructive criticism. We need to accept that the studio that gave us what we all warmly consider to be the quintessential "Bethesda game" is long dead, and in its place is a minimum viable product machine which exists for the sole purpose of exploiting past goodwill to churn out paid mods.

I don't think that's quite right. Starfield is a hot mess, but it's a hot mess that took eight years to make and was made instead of the established, proven franchises. Sadly, the game they believed in wasn't very good and had flaws they won't see because you are 100% correct about them living in an eternal echo chamber.

@@captainpandabear1422 This is a very good point. There may be some middle ground between our two perspectives where the existence of the creation club allows BGS to push features down the road rather than polish or incorporate during production, as they know they can now not only add things to their game in perpetuity but even better be praised for it by their community. So even if their initial intentions were to create a full-featured product they at one time believed in, I can see it becoming very easy for their administration to excise elements they didn't deem necessary for release.

I completely agree. I love the games Todd Howard has created, but they definitely need to be modernized. Destiny 2 is the closest space-themed game to Starfield, with its star map, world selection, and lack of flying. However, Destiny 2 has handcrafted worlds, and only a small number of them. In contrast, Bethesda chose quantity over quality in Starfield, and I genuinely don’t know if they can recover from that. I personally don’t want to explore somewhere that is procedurally deleted when I leave the planet. It’s a beautiful game. I’m happy with the story. I love the combat. But man, it just doesn’t have the backbone of a Bethesda game when it comes to exploration but with every other aspect of the game.. I am super happy with it.

There is a way to address the "running to locations" issue. Instead of "fast travel", or a "vehicle", make game so people are easily sidetracked. On the way to main location, collect valuables, repair gear, craft mission critical consumables, meet new npcs, manage inventory, feed creatures, claim pets, have random interactions based on setting, changing conditions based on time of day, make gear type synergize with factions and resources. Have game transition seamlessly. Long way from point A to point B is part of every good game. What makes something a great game is how much distractions studio places in between. In this regard, modern day Bethesda is shameful, and miles behind newer, lesser studios.

Starfield's problem is it's ALL of the bad of bethesda with little to none of the good. The entire GAME is the radiant system. They've been escalating that system for no reason since skyrim. Skyrim did it fine as it allowed you to get a reason to explore areas with no real content. Fallout 4 made it worse by having the Minutemen's whole questline rely on it. Then Bethesda is great at world design and environmental storytelling and instead of focusing on it they make a huge empty space map that repeats randomly over and over and the handcrafted stuff is boring. They did bad with that in fallout 4 with the settlement system which just made potentially cool locations empty for an unwanted base builder feature. They still have no real " unique " weapons like in Fallout new vegas or skyrim. The legendary system is dumb when you can get the exact weapon that is " unique " randomly. Sigh, es6 is worrying

You've been an optimist when it comes to Starfield. I think that hope has been obscuring your analysis of what's going on. From the very start, Todd and Emil's opinion seemed to mirror that Simpsons meme; "Am I out of touch? No, it's the children who are wrong." They didn't see anything wrong with Starfield, and they weren't going to change it significantly. And it's absurd launch sales (driven mostly by Bethesda Brand hype instead of game info) reinforced that idea for them. As for why the DLC was subpar. Because they're lying about how many people are involved in developing content for the game. Or they're fudging those numbers by including marketing, facility management staff, and janitorial staff. Or, and here's the darker option. The reason why all those earlier game DLCs came out so fast, was because they were being developed alongside the core games and were mostly done by launch. And no, Todd didn't confirm they were doing annual DLC. When asked if they wanted to in that Matty interview he said ""I would say we want to...more or less, yeah. How long that continues? Hopefully, a very long time, but that's...we're planning for the one after this, so there will be another one." That's not the answer of a man who actually has anything planned out on paper. That's a soft answer about what he'd like to do. If he did have anything actually planned he would have hinted or hyped a little with "oh, we're going to some interesting places after this." which is what Todd does. This was a corporate spokesman trying to make it seem like they have a plan and have already started on it. let's be blunt. They didn't think they'd need to do any more design work on the game after the 1 DLC and they're struggling. They have no ideas and no plans. Todd and Emil had this "vision" for their ideal dream game, but they didn't have any actual STORY ideas. They're fine creating content to go in settings and stories other people created originally. But when on their own the best they can do is "What if Firefly, but boring and not a western".

@walasona Eh I disagree. The story isn’t the worst but far from their best. Why does the emissary just not care that we take the unity for ourselves to reset the universe other than hiding the pieces away again even tho they made their position very clear that it was wrong to reset it? Why does resetting the universe only affect constellation in any real meaningful way? Like why aren’t some universes entirely fc or uc or cf? Why not a universe that’s still going thru the colony war? Why is the hunter mainly just one guy, us, or Cora coe? Might have that very last one wrong. Vae victus’ reasoning for the whole terrormorph thing is ridiculous and heavily dampens the uc story(in my opinion at least) why does the fc ranger quest pretty much end after Ron hope? Are there no other serious threats the rangers need to deal with? So on and so on.

@JohnHPixelMD and also it already happened in many ways. If the rest of the industry had no impact on the way Bethesda makes games, the games they'd make would be still on the technological level of Morrowind and Oblivion. We wouldn't have a buggy in Starfield. We wouldn't have gotten Fallout 76. They are listening to the outside. Yet due to ego, pride or a sense of superiority that stems from their past successes, they think they know better. And thus they only implement some of the features and mechanics other games had while ignoring others.

The lesson Bethesda needs to learn is “release a smaller single player game every 4 years, open and interconnected world that’s hand crafted” That’s what this doesn’t have that other games did. Shorten development cycles, make smaller games on less grand scales that have that smooth exploration of an open world. Release games more frequently so there’s more variety and a larger catalog of experiences for fans. The answer is obvious - they’re just seemingly doing all they can to rationalize not taking the obvious approach.

Hangar bays for smaller ships. "Land" vehicles with improved verticality (like a drone or helicopter). This all could exist in Starfield, with not too much extra effort. Third of all we don't know of any other sales numbers outside of steam as Microsoft and Bethesda haven't given them. I actually somewhat enjoyed this DLC and I think it is a step in the right direction because it is content focused. Biggest complaint is that $30 is unacceptably high for something this short. For that price there needed to be at least a questline consisting of at least 8 quests, and 25 side quests. They really need to stop prioritizing features over quests. Also, we need to face the reality that there’s no fixing the procedural locations. They’re always going to be boring because there’s no substance to them. Minor locations in other Bethesda games are only interesting because of lore, and you can’t procedurally generate that. At this point I think the best move for Bethesda is accepting that Starfield is what it is and moving on to Elder Scrolls 6.

It doesn't need as many systems if all the content could be fit on 10% of them. Bethesda just didn't think when making this game.

Agreed, the writing was so contrived and the character interaction DEI that it was so clear instead of telling the story, a group of social justice nitwits were only trying to make a point. Also, instead of 1000 planets with one city per planet on a handful, there should be multiple cities on some of the planets. A planet with a breathable atmosphere and resources should have at least three major cities with roads connecting them, multiple outposts, farms, energy production. Bethesda created an entire planet but only 5% of it is not procedural generated.

If they think the only issue with Starfield are bugs and polish, they have become EA more than I thought. Pushing out paid creations on Fallout 4 that were broken on launch and not fixing them yet as far as I am aware, Bethesda has seriously become the villain in the gaming world. Coming from me, someone with almost 4k hours in modded Skyrim, 2k hours in Fallout 4, and have even uploaded two mods for Skyrim myself, I am done with Bethesda. Unless they course correct which I do not see happening, I will never give them another dime.

My issue with the dlc was that it only took place one planet on one map of the planet. Park your ship for the whole dlc because you're not going anywhere outside the Dazra outskirts. The only time you need to go anywhere else is if you specifically take a mission from the mission board. This was like one big faction quest but unlike the other faction quests you are stuck in the same place for the whole duration.

Imagine releasing literally 1 new mechanic that would've been day 1 content for any other game and then being suprised when your game isnt suddenly good. Like no todd, the lack of a car was not the only issue.

It's small, but in intentional or not there's a small reason that's not just Bethesda being greedy to do free "Sidequest mods" like this beyond getting you to look at the store: Compatibility. If a preexisting mod's somehow impacted by the free mod, you can just remove it and keep your mod.

I don't think PoI was ever a problem, you have plenty of near identical PoI in their past games too, the problem is the journey leading up to those. Photography and scan is fine and all but there really should be more combat or random quests along the line while you're travelling from place to place.

Just an FYI... I review and select my mods from the website on my PC or iPad and save them as bookmarks. When I'm in the Creations page in-game, I just go to the bookmarks or I select search and typ the first couple letters, pick the mod and download. I never have to be annoyed by dozens of paid mods in my face.

I've been watching a streamer play Morrowind for the first time lately, and the sense of discovery he gets from every minor area, the love put into city design, the custom made items and lore wildly outstrip starfield. and it was made by the same studio. with less people in less time 22 years ago.

im okay with visiting the same POI’s. however, they need to lean into procedural generation and randomization. when i go to a similar POI, let there be different NPCs. let me run into different creatures or random encounters. every time i get on, i want to experience something different. every update needs to include this. if they cant nail the DLC, then lean into free content and mods with every update

I hope they eventually add space flight between planets within a solar system! (like an enhanced version of the astrogate mod). 🪐 Also, ‘space walking’ outside of ships, & POI overhaul. They also need more interesting factions to join in DLCs

imo some of the problem is people who'd never been interested in the SpaceSim genre turned up wanting Skyrim in space, and got a SpaceSim - if a very casual one. I don't have the time that ED or SC require you to put in to make progress in the game; Starfield bridges that issue beautifully.

The weirdest decision about shattered space was not to add ship parts, because ship builders seem to be the most active community for the game…

my problem with starfield was that the different faction quests were far superior to the main quest. the main quest had a disappointing and unsatisfying ending in my opinion. finding all those artifacts should have led to the discovery of an alien race and its fantastic universe-altering secret--or something along those lines. also, the different powers should have been obtained each time we discovered and touched an artifact; there was no need to go gallivanting around the galaxy to locate a gazillion additional temples, each one exactly the same, and go thru the same animation again and again. (i grew so bored of this that i simply installed a mod that gave me all the powers at max level.) here's a tip, bethesda: for next year's dlc, have it include an alternate ending, one with aliens and truly ancient ruins, complete with dungeons and bosses and great discoveries. in other words, make it exciting.

The insanity is that they've already learnt the exact lesson they should be learning once. The early Elder Scrolls games were way too big with not enough quality leading to them not selling that well. So they went to fully handcrafted and small in Morrowind, which sold insanely well. And now they're making the exact same mistake all over again...

I wish developers would realize more employees don't equate to better results. Because it takes weeks to get input from one team to another for something minor. More employees means everything is slower, and the more people you have the skill quality lowers overall.

It takes time to onboard new developers that slows down progress from people currently productive. And inexperienced developers take a longer time to make good things, but time is the thing most projects lack.
