JJK is not super easy to understand in the best of times and they chose to watch not only subbed but in a group format which makes it even harder to get everything thats going on. When you have to pay attention to the subtitles youll miss some things when you are talking to your friend or look away for a second. Its why group reactions should always be done in a groups native language.

I know it's a really long text, I'm sorry, but it had to be this way. To really start talking about Toji, we need to discuss a bit about the Zenin clan. Since the beginning of Jujutsu, comments have been made about how the current system is basically rubbish, and the Zenin clan is just one piece of this system, perhaps the most highlighted piece throughout the story. For the members of the Zenin clan, a person's worth is mostly determined by the cursed energy they possess. Here, being a human is not about the notion of humanity as a species, but about what you possess. On one side, there are these sorcerers who inherit something from their families, and on the other side, there are these men and women who have nothing but their bodies. You might ask, 'Isn't this how Suguru Geto thinks? Doesn't he divide human life into a subjective value that is completely beyond each individual's control?' Yes, that's why Geto is such an interesting character. He is just one of the curses that emerged from this kind of thinking - yes, I said curses, and I'll get to that later. The point is, in the jujutsu society, there's this weird and wrong value placed on what constitutes a human life, and in both extremes, this thinking becomes harmful. Take Gojo and Toji, for example. An important thing to note is that the Zenin clan doesn't even recognize this thinking as a problem. Naoya (a character that hasn't appeared yet, i won't give spoilers no worries) who represents the 'perfection' of the Zenin clan, admits that they were a bit unfair in what they did to Toji, because he was a strong man. The thing Naoia doesn't realize is that Toji's treatment was not terrible because he was a strong guy, but because the very notion of dividing human beings between superior and inferior by nature was already wrong. Toji's response to the Zenin clan was to pursue and kill those whose lives were deemed valuable, and he kept going until he reached the peak of this thinking - the strongest man, Satoru Gojo. The most interesting aspect of their conflict is that they were much closer than Toji and Gojo imagined. Toji has no cursed energy; he is considered less than a human, reduced to the status of a mere 'monkey,' because of what he lacks. On the other hand, Gojo seemingly has it all, but he is not a person; he is not a human being; he is defined by his strength, reduced to that status because of what he has. The jujutsu system reduces people to their most useful parts in different scenarios, and both Gojo and Toji were just victims of this process. However, interestingly, Toji attacked Gojo as if he were the root of the problem. Everything related to Toji is extremely tragic .What I will say next wasn't mentioned in the manga only in the fanbook, so it's not a spoiler, and knowing this won't harm your experience with the story. Just so you can understand how terrible Toji's experience was in the Zenin Clan, I'm going to provide a leak from the author about what Toji's life was like in the Zenin Clan: > Q: How long was he part of the Zenin Clan and what kind of harassment was he subjected to while he was there? > A: Since childhood. He was thrown into a swarm of cursed spirits in his youth. The scar on the corner of his lower mouth is from that time His life is completely based on proving to others how strong he is, even if others don't really care about that kind of strength. In the end, this only harms him because people who could participate and improve his life are neglected and excluded. You could argue that Toji's thinking is quite ironic, trying to prove his clan wrong about him, the same clan that uses power to measure the value of human life. Toji strives to be the strongest man possible. Let's go back a bit to the relationship between Toji and Gojo; there's much more that can be said about it. Toji represents what could have happened to Gojo if certain significant events in his life hadn't occurred, like the death of Riko or Geto's change of mentality. Strength, control, and power are central values for Gojo, he's not exactly the opposite of the Zenin clan in this regard; we could say he's less extreme, but the idea remains almost the same. Riko, a weak girl who chooses to sacrifice herself for the greater good, demonstrates that her life is meaningful, not because of the cursed energy she possesses, but because of all the connections she has and how she helps another girl make her decision. Gojo's ideals are challenged in this arc. Is strength really control? We have this very proud man who didn't go through that kind of experience; it's just a guess that Toji's situation, being someone rejected by his clan and society in general, was so extreme that he had already given up on any redemption or value life could have. he's not trying to do anything other than move forward. He is a man of resentment and injustice, pretending not to care about anyone but himself, but deep down, he still holds onto hope. Similar to Gojo, he places that hope not in himself but in a future generation. Throughout the story, the character frequently refers to himself as a 'monkey.' The important thing is that he can't separate what he is, before being merely a 'monkey' - in other words, a sub-human. Toji is a father; he can't separate from himself the part that still loves Megumi, which is why he sells his son to the Zenin clan. Deep down, he knows that even though his childhood was terrible, Megumi's won't be because he was born with cursed technique; he is a blessing, and that place will be better for him than living with Toji. This man, filled with resentment and negativity, is a curse created by the world of Jujutsu for the world of Jujutsu. His final thoughts in the fight against Gojo were about Megumi and how he had failed as a father, but despite that, the boy could still have a good life. The only thing that gave Toji some sense of identity was Megumi and his wife; they were the blessing that illuminated this curse. Even the worst of us can have something to be proud of
