Where does gold come from?

The high-energy processes involved in a supernova can create heavy elements like gold through rapid neutron capture (the r-process). - **Neutron Star Mergers**: Recent evidence suggests that collisions between neutron stars, which are incredibly dense remnants of massive stars, also create significant amounts of gold. These events release vast amounts of energy, producing heavy elements through similar rapid neutron capture processes. 2. **Terrestrial Formation**: - **Hydrothermal Processes**: Within the Earth's crust, gold is primarily deposited through hydrothermal processes. Hot, mineral-rich water moves through cracks and fissures in the Earth's crust, depositing gold and other minerals as it cools. This can lead to the formation of gold veins or lodes in rock. - **Placer Deposits**: Over geological time, weathering and erosion of gold-bearing rocks can release gold particles.
