Which piece of Massenet's like me the most? It is very difficult to decide which piece of any given composer is best from the others he composed, since every single work has its unique charm, form, melodic and harmonic structure, spiritual feelings and source of inspiration. Jules Massenet was another musical genius. In few words, a brilliant and outstanding composer. And while the majority of the people sadly only know his beautiful "Meditation of Thais", they are however, missing the whole picture of his greatness without knowing about his Orchestral Suites (so rich in ideas, harmonic delights and gorgeous melodic structures), or his superb spanish theme operas like The Cid, The Navarraise, Don Quichiotte or the french folklore opera The Jounglar of Notre Dame, or the mistic and bufa ones like Mannon, Cendrillon and Le Mage. He wrote around 16 full-scale operas. His ballets are also beautiful from start to finish and also worth mentioning are his oratorios, cantatas, incidental music and the almost forgotten Piano Concerto which by the way is a very neglected number by pianists today.
