My first Box set was Sue Townsend's Adrian Mole diaries .Nice . Thanks for the show and tell. Ps the pain we endured for O'Level lit . I had Niapaul . Early on my brother had Animal Farm. Some times I think our educators were ' unhappy and wanted company ' I had friends who got " War and Peace " .

Ah, an Adrian Mole boxset, how wonderful. I had the books ,never saw the set though. War and Peace seems really common 🙂

@@JulesBurtAnd a lot of us Yanks really needed an escape after the last few days, both in the U.S. and here in Germany, two nations on the precipice of insanity. Thank God for your soft spoken common sense, Jules, and pleasant distractions from the crud! ❤

I have a couple of those plus a few others. For good practice, I would always recommend putting the two outside books in first and fitting last one(s) in the centre, as you did with first two sets, less risk of damage; especially if set has flimsier thin card covers, with a fold in edge, that can damage the last inserted book, rather than the sturdier cardboard slip case. I wish I’d collected more! I still remember the 90s when very few wanted box sets and at least a couple of book sellers I knew used the discarded boxes to protect other books that were being posted.

Ah yes! I remember getting books in the post like that as well! Great tips. I've had so many great sets through my hands, quite a few I wish I'd kept now....

I am much enjoying this trek through box sets - I do have one or two - however don't see a lot here in NZ. I was pleased to hear a note about your"wife" - I think these unsung heroes of the book collectors are often forgotten about people - sometimes these people have HUGE crosses to bare living with an obsessive book collector - my wife and I will celebrate 39 years in Feb 25 if we make it... thanks for sharing your collection - always interesting - Terry T :-))) NZ

Another great video, Jules. I always enjoy your content. I was particularly interested in what you said about the Puffin Moomins collection you had though as I had almost exactly the same experience with a Moomin Puffin collection. About 20 years ago I picked a copy of Adventures in Moominland from a local boot sale for about £3.00 and a couple of years later, once I’d finished with it, popped it up onto eBay as an auction but was stunned when it ended up going for over £100. I could never quite work out why it went for that much though. It was a lovely set of about 6 paperbacks but they certainly weren’t 1st editions or anything. Just bog standard 1970s reprints as far as I could tell. I think there must just be something about that particular collection that attracts collectors though as I think it still sells for good prices now years later. It was definitely a lovely looking thing though.
@JulesBurtАй бұрын
Yes, mine was the exact one you describe. It was mid seventies and past my main Puffin collecting period, that was why I let it go. I think I got £100 for mine at the time as well. I have the original books in first now but the set has reprints I think.

found what appears to be a pretty rare Penguin, esp. in USA - Christine De Rivoyre's BOY - UK printing with a German price sticker - DM 6.00 -the hardcover is available but I have a feeling this Penguin is scarce-o - great art deco cover art by Philip Castle.

I've been waiting for you to do something on box sets as I've been buying these over the past 6-7 years. I've mainly got the Penguin boxes: Castaneda, Ballard, two different sets of Waugh's Men at Arms trilogy, Orwell, Forester and so on, probably got 20-25 of them. Also got a few of Michael Moorcock's box sets published by Mayflower. They are lovely pieces to have, but like yourself I always felt it's been a way for the publisher to clear out remainder stocks or maybe give a certain author an extra push for the Christmas trade. But, I'm hard put to find a bibliography that deals solely with box sets. Anyone out there who knows? Great video again, thanks!

Thanks Jonathan! There's plenty you mention that I'd still like to get hold off. Ivecrealky only started to pick them up in Ernest these last few years but I hardly ever see them in secondhand bookshops, but seemingly plentiful online....
@jonathanpearman1052Ай бұрын
@@JulesBurt I'd say that they (publ. 60s n 70s) were fairly common about 4-5 years ago on eBay and very rarely on Swedish online booksellers, much less so today. Although last night I did get Holroyd's two biographies on Augustus John as a Penguin box set(!).

I love these! I used to have an American box set of the Edgar Rice Burroughs western novels, but I sold it. There are several U.S. Bond ones I would love to get! Was there ever a UK Bond box? 🇬🇧
@JulesBurtАй бұрын
There was a UK Bond set, for the early 70's photo jacket covers. Pretty scarce of course 😞
