The LONDON Paperback + PULP Fair - JULY 2023 - The Most AMAZING Vintage PAPERBACK Show Ever?
In today's video we take a look back at the recent London Paperback & Pulp Fair that took place on the 30th July 2023.
The top UK paperback and pulp dealers were in attendance and I was there to film the show, meet fans of the channel and of course, buy some books. Paired with the adjacent ephemera fair, there was plenty to see.
I also got to interview, Stephen Jones, editor of countless books and the recent book on King Kong, fair organiser Neil and author and artist Rian Hughes talking about his recent book, Rayguns and Rocketships.
The highlight for me was meeting fans of the channel. If this was you, thanks so much!

Great to see this, Jules, I'd loved to have been there with you and Bob and Maurice, but next year, I will be- and am flattered to hear people were asking where I was. Steve Jones' stall looked amazing- and tonight another full view on the plasma will be the post-work highlight!

It was really great to meet you and Dorset Bob, Jules. I have to say that Bob's stand was amazing, plenty of great Philip K Dick, most of which I bought! But it was so much fun going round all the stands and finding stuff I never thought I'd find in a million years. I stayed for about 4 hours and went round 3 or 4 times and I think mentally I was trashed after that and called it a day. I'm sure I missed some gems but hey-ho, I can't complain, I was very pleased with my little haul. Meeting Rian was a pleasure and of course I had to purchase a copy of Rayguns & Rocketships which is absolutely beautiful and worth every penny. Your video brings back very happy memories... of just 3 days ago! Until next time, take care Jules Jason

Yes, I wasn't aware Rian was going to be attending, that really was a pleasant surprise. His book is amazing, glad your grabbed yourself a copy. until next time!

This got me excited cause in about 50 days I am going to a book fair that I go to almost every year and last year I got a lot of old Edgar Rice Burroughs, Nick Carter adventure, and some vintage SciFi/Fantasy books so much it filled up my foldable buggy twice! Seeing this makes me anticipate my fair even more now!

Great to finally meet you at the show, Jules, and it's also great to watch this video which brings back many happy memories! I had a great day at the show, sold a lot, still have a lot left, and bought, well, not so much as I didn't get the time to leave my table unattended for long and have a proper look around the tables. Anyway, a couple of things to add to your video... At 1.06.17, you show the Penguin paperback edition of The Chase by Richard Unekis, which you may or may not know was adapted into the film Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry, and which is a very different beast from the source novel. And at 1.06.57, The Jokers by Martin Sands is another move tie-in written by John Burke, although this time under a pseudonym. The film is also a rather jolly caper movie, which is also one of director Michael Winner's early funny ones.

Thanks David, great to meet you too and fantastic photos, thanks for letting me use them. 🙂 Pleased you had a good day, your stock was outstanding. Thanks for the info on The Jokers, I should have guessed it was John Burke writing it!

Brilliant video and a brilliant show! I had a great time, chatted with sellers and came away with a ton of books. The video is a bit like ‘here are the books you could have also bought’ 😄. I wasn’t looking for anything specific, but I did come away with bargains, including books I wanted but wasn’t expecting to pick up there. Also, really nice meeting you Jules. Great video. So much to see, so much to say! Interviews and cover flipping - brilliant! So many iconic covers, such good prices. Unbelievable. Where I live you don't have real old-school collectors, but you do have a lot of people with disposable income for novelty, so even if they had paperback shows here, they would just be dealers asking jackpot prices. I remember going to shows like that, that were a mix of rare finds and bargains. I liked finding out about the two new specialty books, and the interviews are great. The first interview was more metatextual than I expected! Enter Hall at the end with something else. That batch of science fantasies were really special. Thanks!

Great video, was looking forward to going to this book / pulp fair (most of the time it seems to be dominated by postcards etc over the last few months) but the trains from my hometown were totally hopeless on Sunday (good old special replacement bus service etc) so didn't make it. Really hope they have more of these combo pulp / paperback fairs as I intend to go the show. I would have definitely picked up some of those lovely condition Science Fantasy (New Worlds etc) and other SF ones. It was nice to see the show even if it was only on YT
@JulesBurt

Thanks, yes, the trains hampered a few potential visitors. Imagine how busy it would have been if they had been running as normal? Hopefully they'll be a similar event next year we can all attend. Bob's stall had some beautiful stuff, those New Worlds, lovely...

What a great video Jules. I've been to very many comic book and video game fairs but knew nothing about this one. Would I be right in thinking that the science fiction selection was inferior to the crime and saucy stuff. Nevertheless should be well worth a visit when the next one rolls around.

Argh! Frustrating to be here in LA, CA watching the "want of" and "interest in" so many paperbacks and old books. I have been dispersing a huge collection of books that were part of a bookstore stock that never came to be, stock at my brother and sister-in-laws garage and in storage. Lots of mystery, sf and the once popular (here) romance paperbacks. Have wound up giving away so much of them, and/or selling really cheaply. thanks for the tour of that show. fun to see book covers from overseas of familiar titles that are presented in the US with very different cover art (in most/many cases). One thing I've not understood, namely the keen interest in the Penguin books. I mean, they are generally very bland, repetitive-looking tomes, with much content that is available from other publishers with far more lively packaging. What is the "hook" that makes the Penguins so attractive to collectors? (Sorry for the rather unenlightened question. I have to assume there is something much more remarkable about those books that I am not aware of, ie am dumb about! (I should say that I DO very much value my 3 original QUATERMASS Penguins. But then, these feature text that was not available in any other form, plus featured super rare photographs, so their worth seems, to me, more overt.) Thanks for the video!
