So a fact about the date the Doctor got from the Crack that the audience would have at the time- 26th of June 2010 was the date the final episode of this series was due to broadcast on in real life. Also, I won’t comment on if you’re theorising about River and the Doctor is correct (spoilers!) but I will say that the production crew did originally intend to cast an older Doctor this time round. Matt Smith coming into the audition and utterly blowing everyone away changed that plan. So I think you mentioned somewhere being a tad confused about River’s timeline and if she’s actually dead or not. The best way I can explain it is this: think of a person’s timeline as a straight line. It begins at point A when they’re born, and ends at point Z when they die. They spend their life moving from A to Z steadily and all the days between are nice and neat in alphabetical order. Both River and the Doctor’s personal timelines (as in the timeline of their own life and nothing else) are like this, despite all the time travel they both do. They’re living their own lives in order, one day at a time. But the TARDIS means the Doctor can travel to any point in time, and therefore any point in a person who happens to live in that time’s personal timeline. So when they first met, it was at point Z in River’s timeline- the last part. This episode was at let’s say point W- closer to the end than the beginning of her life but at an earlier date in history than the Library was. The events of the Library will still happen, but the Doctor is doing things out of order. In other words, it would be like if the Doctor went back in time to 1500, and then a week later went back in time to 1485. He might meet the younger versions of the people from 1500 but they wouldn’t remember him because the meeting hadn’t happened for them yet. This is one of the reasons why River keeps that diary- so she and the Doctor can both keep track of which meetings with each other have happened for the other one and won’t accidentally cause a Paradox by referencing something the other hasn’t done yet.

@@julesreacts Without addressing if anything "went wrong" or not, it's only fair to point out that that such a thing would not be necessary in the show's logic for him to constantly meet someone in the wrong order, given that he jumps all around in time. In fact, if you (julesreacts) lived long enough and in the world of the show, you would have met the Doctor in a very mixed up order. Let's say you started running into all his episodes in 1985 (ignoring later 11th Doctor and beyond stories for obvious spoiler reasons). You'd meet both the 2nd and 6th Doctor in 1985 in the story "The Two Doctors", but then meet the 1st Doctor in 1986 for his first story with the Cybermen. In 1987 you'd meet the 9th Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) because of when he appears with Rose in "Father's Day". In about 1995 you'd meet the 11th Doctor (Matt Smith) because that's when he crashed at the house of a young Amy Pond, and then finally in 2005 you'd meet the 10th Doctor (David Tennant) for the first time, as he showed up to say goodbye to Rose right before he regenerates, which happens before he first meets Rose as the 9th Doctor about a year later.

I get companions crushing on the Doctor. It makes a lot of sense to get a crush on the superhero showing you time and space, especially if he looks like David Tennant or Matt Smith. It makes less sense for the Doctor to crush back. Mayflies, you know, and there's only so much heartbreak you can take. But if you go the route of a jaded traveller seeing life through some fabulous young person's eyes, new lease on life, etc., you can still kinda see it. But? We're kinda hardwired to root for happily ever after in our stories, especially long form. Doctor Who has too much heart in general (one heart more than normal?) for us to really like a girl-of-the-season format, as if the Doctor was a serial TV show James Bond. You need more space between great loves, or the love starts to feel cheap. That said? In the episode itself, with Amy being as scared as she was, thinking she was going to die? It makes sense. It just hits every wrong button in the audience. I do think it's supposed to, though. I think we're supposed to see Amy is making a mistake here. Because she's nervous about her wedding. Because she's keyed up from everything that's happened. Amy is a pretty interesting character, imo. There's often a subtle tension between who she really is and who she thinks she is and the person the Doctor wants her to be. And sometimes they are three different people. Here, it wasn't just that the Doctor is done with romance for now and is 900-something years old. It's also that to him, Amy is still Amelia and seven years old. He still sees her as that little girl who prayed to Santa for someone to save her from the scary crack in her wall and made him all those dinners while he was working out his new taste buds in the middle of his regeneration cycle. He sees her grown up cynicism and aggression as a tragedy, and he is both trying to pretend all those years he was so late and contributed to her issues didn't happen and trying to erase them. On the other side, there's Amy. She says she knows what she wants. She really has no idea at all. But more on that in future episodes.

I think this is one of those rare instances where the second part of a New Who two-parter is better than the first. Not only are there so many incredible moments, but it propels the season arc forward in unexpected ways. Every scene with Amy unable to open her eyes is brilliant, but the sequence where she has to walk while pretending to see is just incredible. That moment when the Angel turns its head was such a surprise. The mystery really continues to mount with River too, doesn't it? Hmmm... The reveal of what the cracks in time do was a game-changer and it raises a lot of questions. I love that the Doctor mentions nobody remembering the Cyber King, it's like Steven Moffat came up with the idea of the cracks as a way to explain why the people of Earth seem to just forget all of the constant alien invasions going on all the time. Oh and that date - 26th of June, 2010 - that was the date of the season finale's broadcast, so felt pretty flippin' cool at the time. I remember I had my first ever uni exam on that day (8am on a Saturday, urgh!) so it felt extra special for me. Although, at that point we were still two episodes behind here, which was exciting because up until then we'd always been months behind. It wasn't until the 2010 Christmas special that we actually started getting episodes on the same day as the UK. Now, that ending scene... I've never been a fan of it and when i first watched it I was convinced something was possessing Amy. As I've grown older though, rewatched it and heard analysis from other fans, I've come to at least understand it. I think it does make sense given that Amy is going through this huge identity crisis, having kind of coasted through life only for her imaginary friend to turn back up and flip it all upside down. Throw in the fact that she's only 21 (too young for marriage, in my opinion) and just came through a very traumatic experience, I get the idea behind it. Again, I find it uncomfortable, but I can understand it. Another great reaction Jules, will you be watching the next Meanwhile in the TARDIS minisode?

In the climactic scene Karen Gillan had to walk with her eyes closed, which she said was difficult and challenging as the ground was uneven and muddy. She stated that "it was the most scary thing" when she had to trip over a step and fall, even though she was aware of the crash mat. As she was not able to express herself through her eyes, Gillan had to make herself more animated to convey emotion.

Umpteen times I’ve seen this, and here’s something I only recently realized. In this episode, we learn River’s been kept in the Stormcage Containment Facility (which I think is a great name in general). Waaaaaay back in 1x13 (“The Parting of the Ways”, and yes I had to look it up), we learn that one of The Doctor’s nicknames is “The Oncoming Storm”. One way to think about this would be that the Stormcage Containment Facility is a “Facility” to “Contain” the “Storm Cage”, and in two-parter we see that River is being used to contain (or at least control/direct) The Doctor; in other words, River is the Storm Cage. To paraphrase River, I’m not saying I’m _right_, but it does seem to fit.

Been waiting for this moment since Rose, Jules. Remember what I hinted at back then under my Open Maw Productions moniker? It's one of the reasons Rose rubbed me so wrong, and the Doctor to an extent. The 11th Doctor denies the romantic advances of Amy. They learn into the old man in the young man's body. So many of Matt Smith's little body language affectations are hinting at the old old man inside. I love it. I also love that he has stopped being a home wrecker, like 10 and 9 were.

@@CrankyGrandma Of late, I've noticed several people suggesting the Doctor was not romantically in love with Rose (or Mme. de Pompadour, for that matter), and you can definitely view the Rose episodes through that eye. (I know this isn't a new take, but I usually saw -- and still see, quite a bit -- people positing the romantic take, and it's also easy to view it through that lens.) This may be why the part human Doctor who was able to take the Doctor's memories but feel somewhat differently from them and act differently was the right person for her (although I think it probably was an adjustment for them both, regardless).

Lots of revelations this episode! The crack, River's crime, the significance of Amy's wedding day. I love Moffat's series arcs, I know many people say RTD was better at it but I disagree, I love the multiple plot lines working their way through his tenure and their satisfactory conclusions. I think we were all shocked and cringing at the final scene (and Moffat has said he regretted it). But as others have pointed out - it kinda makes sense for Amy's character at this point. And she says straight out it's not a romantic thing, "Oh, you are sweet Doctor but I really wasn't suggesting anything quite so long term."

Martha's face when the doctor talked about Rose was more sadness than jealousy, she even was happy when the doctor found Rose. I think Rose acted more like a jealous person whe she saw Martha.

Agreed. I have more complaints about how Ten acted in Martha's run, as he didn't show her nearly enough appreciation. I would have liked another season or two of Martha. Martha and Donna got along too. Rose was jealous of the waitress Ten talked to to get information in one of the parallel world episodes too. I can see a trajectory of that, though, from Sarah Jane to Mme. de Pompadour to the parallel world where her parents don't have another version of her but gave a dog the same name. (Hey, they liked the name.)

The caves from part 1 and the forest in this are very close to each other, near Wales where a lot of the series was filmed. Puzzle Wood and Clearwell Caves, the caves even have a book detailing their LONG history of use for filming, a lot of which was Doctor Who haha. Me and my Blind Mum very much enjoyed Amy having to navigate with her eyes closed, and you can really tell a lot of the fear is real, KG really struggled with it and wasn't used to it and I think that honestly helped by making her hesitation and anxiety more real. There is a VERY important scene here, that people went nuts about online trying to work out the truth about. All I'll say is, it wasn't a mistake, and we do find out :) I adore River, and her and the Doctor doing things out of order is so well done, they both know they will ALWAYS know something the other doesn't will always have to keep secrets and not spoil things, they have to protect the timeline and not influence each other too much but also sometimes their foreknowledge means they DO need to influence things a bit or act a certain way. They have this wonderful relationship of absolute trust despite knowing they're both hiding things. Trust built on a certainty of lies.

13:30 This is the biggest issue I have with this episode. In Blink, the Angels couldn't even move when the camera was looking at them. That's the whole point of their quantum lock. They physically, literally, and physiologically _cannot_ move while being observed. Meaning they don't have to know they're being observed. If they can move, they're not being observed. So Amy pretending she can see wouldn't do anything, scared Angels or not. Not Steven Moffat's worst crima as a showrunner, but also not the last time he'll retcon his own world rules to write himself out of a corner he wrote himself into.

Well the "science" behind it is never explained properly, in Blink it's just the Doctor doing a quick explanatory video for Sally Sparrow so he tells her the basic idea, but doesn't go into details. So I wouldn't call it a retcon. Maybe the knowledge that someone is looking it them is what makes the quantum lock kick in, so even if they just THINK someone's looking at them - they freeze.

As I've said before, I LOVE River Song !!! I also have a love/hate relationship with The Weeping Angels. I don't think you need to worry about Amy and The Doctor. I'm not even sure if she just wasn't pulling his leg, but if she was serious, that could've been influenced by her seeing The Doctor and River bantering back and forth and seeing that he IS desirable. Hello, Jules!💜 Very happy you enjoyed the episode, well, until the closing minutes. That whole scene could have been plucked and I would have been fine never having seen it... but, that's in the past and it just is. However, many things in this one were excellent. All the things you mention, thrills, chills, and Tension! Yes "scary, emotional, and Heartfelt. Plus an abundance of comedy, even amidst all the very dangerous goings on. The Doctor winding Bob up - "I made him say comfy chairs.", "Get a life Bob... Oops." Sometimes it's the simple things.🤣 And the scenes between the Doctor, and River. I adore River Song, she is such a fantastic character, and she works so well with, and against, the Doctor, with her cheeky playfulness, her I hate you!, and, course, her constant Spoilers dig... her past his future. She can always get a rise out of him, it seems. As for the romance aspect, between Amy and the Doctor - if ti is how Amy's character has grown, I wish she had kept more of the Amelia personality. here It is like Martha, but boosted way beyond the pale. As for relationships in the show, I am much more in favor of one like the Doctor and River. The back and forth, the teasing, joking around, the good fun playfulness. Is it a romance?, who knows, but I think it is great fun, and very entertaining, even when they get momentarily mad, or frustrated with one another. This episode was the better half of the 2 parts but it is very difficult to take it all in on the first viewing. So many things are going on, not the least of which are the almost constant "Doctor has to come up with something to save everyone i an impossible moment" thing, which seemed to be occurring the entire last 3/4 of the episode. All the moments which caused the genuine wide-eyed reaction from you, including 9:48, 12:46, and 15:15.😯😯😯 I do have to say that 1 second, in the UK, must be vastly different than the one I am used to - Amy seemed to have her eyes open, for an uncomfortably looong second.😅 I do like the exchange with Amy, where he says "If I always told you the truth, I wouldn't need you to trust me." One of my favorite lines. 🥰 And his later, very sudden, explosive, "Well. What Else Have You Got?... Tell me!", and River just calmly looks at him, alert, but unruffled. Great scene. Additionally, immediately, your squichy thrill feel reaction - "I like an angry Doctor."😂 A brilliant outro, your observations, and questions, all on point, with wonderful attention to detail and possibilities. Well done! A lot to take in. I imagine you picked up a bit more during the editing sessions, which is good here. It's pretty obvious that Amy has been infatuated with the Doctor for years. They meet River, Amy notices and comments on the chemistry between River and the Doctor. It's obvious to everyone except the Doctor that he and River will be a thing in the future. At the end of the episode, it seems to me that Amy is thinking that she doesn't have much time - in the sense that she's just come face to face with her own mortality, and also in the sense that she has competition in the form of River. So yes, she takes her best shot at the Doctor before he's off the market. From the Doctor's persective it's been maybe a couple of days, so of course he doesn't feel the same way about her. For the audience, that kiss seems to come out of nowhere. If there had been a line or two with Amy asking how the Doctor feels about River, then we would have seen where she was going with this and why first time around. Credit to Matt and Karen for doing the best with the material they were given.

I really appreciate that outlook on the Doctor about not wanting a romantic entanglement with his companion! I agree, in the same way I found the 104 year old vampire hooking up with the high school student objectionable. Despite his looks, he reiterated in this episode that he is over 900 years old! And, of course, he will outlive her. By an eternity. Having said that, I am wondering. Quite frankly, though, the Doctor does take advantage of his looks every so often... as with Madame de Pompadour, for example.

There will be people for whom the actual, as opposed to apparent, age gap is not really a problem. Madame de P was clearly a special case and he would know that from the mind meld. 😀 Similarly with River - he knew she would cope psychologically, as when he first met her she had already been in a long relationship with him.

She also was the aggressor -- she kissed him. Although he seemed into it, but he also seemed more impressed by being kissed by Mme. de Pompadour, somehow. I don't know. That was a weird episode. Also a Moffat episode. Also an episode where the Doctor meets a little girl and then meets her again when she's a woman (with not as much time passing for him).

Amy "Okay... well there's a place that sells chips down the road, we could-" 11th "And that are named Rose." Anyway aside from that little bit, this episode had me at the edge of my seat. I was already scared of the weeping angels but then they so them actually moving?! Nah, terrified me and then Amy having to walk with her eyes close added to the horror. Anyway it's cool to see you doing what every Doctor who fan did while watching, becoming so immersed in it you start thinking with the Doctor.

I do like this episode more than the first part, but obviously it works because it's a two parter. This part is far more interesting though. I love how all the clerics were being erased from existence and the other clerics didn't know and kept going to the crack. A lot of people love River, I think she is a great character honestly. I think I probably also thought she killed the Doctor when I first watched it. Of course, your first thought though is "how is that possible? there's no way the Doctor will die" but Doctor Who always finds a way to confuse us all and keep us guessing! I also agree with the romance bit. I think it worked really well with Rose and the whole show felt a lot different back then as well, but it felt better then. At this point, I feel like romance with the companion shouldn't be a thing really because it would be too played out and expected. It's much more fun to just be friends and care about them in other ways I think. Thanks as always for these videos. Looking forward to the next one!

It's my biggest grief with the RTD era that he made the Doctor only age the exact length of his tenure. Nine literally only lasted a year of his 900+ lifespan. Weirdly makes Ten's "I could do so much more" more poignant, because he genuinely could, they're such anomalously short runs for his regenerations. I don't think its a spoiler to state that Moffat builds in padding time into his run, where off-screen stuff can live freely in our (and Big Finish's) imaginations.

Funnily enough, Amy isn't the first companion Matt Smith has kissed. Before he was on Who, he starred in a series called The Secret Diary of a Call Girl, that also starred one Billie Piper. One of the funniest clips around is when someone asks Piper to name the better kisser out of Smith and Tennant. :D

*Amy... making her moves on the Doctor* "...she means him? *giggle* ....No ...No, no, no..." The most apropriate reaction lol. And very much the same that I personally (and from what I've read; A LOT of others) had upon first seeing that scene as well. According to Moffat himself, the scene was meant to play and meant as a joke more than anything, but on the hindsight he has said that it wasn't exactly one of the best moves he did. Thankfully so, I feel. I can't say it comes straight out of NOWHERE per-se, as I can SOMEWHAT understand Amy chasing this mystery man his known all her life and all, but even so that is one scene I wish just didn't outright exist in the show, let alone how forcefull she is during it. But, as said, thankfully Moffat himself agrees that it was a mistake, and thankfully also one he learned of and didn't repeat. EDIT: "I just don't want another romance" Also the way we all felt. ...But trust me, it'll change. It'll DEFINITELY change. You'll see. :3

I don't think we should have seen the angels moving at all like we did in this episode, because up until that moment even we as the audience never see them move, so to see them moving just feels less scary. It was strange seeing Amy acting horny though, how Matt Smith managed to act like he wasn't enjoying himself I've no idea 😂

The bit with the gun flashes and the angels coming closer was so well done! Loved that moment! I feel the same as you when it comes to romances in shows like Doctor Who. I can't be bothered with it. I just want some fun and exciting adventures through time without wondering "will they-won't they". Also, I think solid friendships would work better and be much more meaningful. It's a shame that a lot of television thinks it needs to throw romance into the mix instead of close platonic relationships between characters.

Steven Moffat later regretted the scene in which Amy sexually harassed the Doctor. I don’t think he regretted revealing that Amy was attracted to the Doctor (arguably that was revealed earlier), he just regretted the way the scene was done.

As much as I love this episode and the last one for a lot of things; bringing back the angels, setting up A LOT for the series to come, explaining away plot holes in the past; I think seeing the angels move just sucks so hard. Seeing the one hand close around The Doctor's collar is fine, we can debate if we even saw it or if our minds played tricks on us, but the power of the meta-knowledge that the angels only move when not observed by a living thing *including the audience* is so important that I think seeing them turn towards Amy ruined that a little. Still a bloody good two parter though...

I absolutely love this doctor, and the weeping angels too. This two partner is really fun, and I only have a few nitpicks about it, mostly just pedantry. I will say I always loved that scene where the Doctor reassured her in the forest, too. I could probably say a lot about this episode, as with most episodes, but I don't really have the spoons for it right now lol. But, I agree with Steven Moffat's later opinion that the scene with Amy coming on to the Doctor was a mistake, it feels so weird and wrong to me.

I agree about your view on romances. I think the Doctor and the companion shouldn't have a romantic relationship, if the Doctor does have to have that then it should be characters like River, side characters who have a more equal footing with the Doctor

Little corker this one IMO, always good when the second part is (even) better than the first I think. More going on and _loads_ of great lines in this ep. Plus a _bit_ more revealed about River. (re: romance, i'm not against it BUT I don't think it's right for every Doctor. It worked with 10's kind of suave, swashbuckling vibe but I don't think it fits 11's nerdily awkward, slightly hyper professor)

The scene where Amy tries to seduce the Doctor was one of the most stupidest and pointless scenes in the episode otherwise the rest of the episode was fantastic. That scene recieved alot of complaints from families to the BBC about the show being too sexualised as this is also a kid's show. In 2020 Steven Moffat admitted that he should not have played the scene where Amy tries to seduce the Doctor "for laughs", noting that Amy's ignoring the Doctor's protest against her overtures does, at the very least, have some uncomfortable sexual assault undertones. He admitted this was the one thing about his era would change.

It's wild looking back on this. Moffat had said on record he regrets writing Amy this way because it made her seem like.. basically a harlot. LOL I'm giving it a pass; she's assumedly in her early 20s and at that age, you still don't quite know what you want nor knowing the right path to take. Separately, The Weeping Angels still can't beat since their original introduction in Blink but they are still an immaculate foe. The consistent fear of not only having to not blink but to not see, not touch, it's frightening.

I've actually always disliked this pair of episodes overall because of the changes made to the Angels. For starters, we see them move. The unseen thing is _always_ scarier; they never should've let us see them move. Plus, this episode causes some soft conflicts with what happened in _Blink._ Most of what Ten says about how the Angels work back then turns out to be wrong (we see here that they can indeed move while stone, and it's also implied that they turn to stone purposefully to 'hide', whereas Ten said they couldn't help it). I liked the explanation Ten gave for Angel behavior _much_ better than how the Angels work here. Plus, in _Blink,_ Larry stared into an Angel's eyes for at least as long as Amy did, and that didn't put an Angel in his eye.

I agree about the romance with the doctor. It kinda reeks of manic pixie girl vibes when women swoon over the doctor. Which is odd for me because modern media tends to be very romance dry to the point of being annoying. Like modern stories feel like they were written by vulcans or something. But for me Rose was getting annoying by the end, Martha was insufferable. But I loved Donna's complete lack of romantic tension, yet she still challenged him on his morals and ethics.

“You, me, handcuffs…must it always end this way?” The doctor remembers when River handcuffed him and sacrificed herself in the library. Back when he was Ten. I have to admit I hated Amy coming on to him just before her wedding. It seems obvious she’s not sure she wants that to happen. She ran away with the doctor and now in the eve of her wedding she wants a fling with him. She, at this point, was not my favorite person. The doctor’s clueless response did make me laugh. That’s very him. Even with Rose…he was very very fond of rose, very attached. But he was not capable of the sort of romance she wanted. The part human who regenerated from his hand could love her. But the Doctor is so alien, and it’s easy to forget that. I’ll go on the record fully agreeing with you…I don’t want a romance between the Doctor and a companion. The show is better without it, and with the Doctor being just too alien for that.
