Hey guys! I've heard such great things about Firefly and I thought we could watch it together! I already love it!

Mal order his crew to live Serenity in the two shuttles and Wash releases a distress signal. While breathing with difficulty, Mal recalls how most of the members of his crew joined him in the Serenity while waits for a miracle.

So, in earlier episodes, We actually saw and heard Kaylee telling Mal in passing multiple times about wanting to get the replacement part that actually broke this episode, but Mal kept telling her not to worry about it, that they could not afford it at the time and to find a work-a-round. So the ship had been warning Kaylee before the accident, and this episode was due to Mal not realizing the responsibility of taking care of the ship and the ship will take care of you. You can bet that after this anytime Kaylee told Mal that the ship needed a part for fixing, he took her seriously.

I don't think it was the same part. Kaylee mentions a "Compressor coil", not a catalyzer. I'm quite certain that Kaylee would be able to tell the difference between the two parts.

@@jeffburnham6611 Yes, you are correct in that she wanted to replace the entire compression coil, warning that if the compression coil broke the ship would be stuck drifting, and the catalyzer was a vital part of the compression coil. It is like being warned about a transmission needing replaced soon and the torque converter on the inside of it being the first piece to break. The small piece breaking still took the entire compression coil out of commission.

My favorite Firefly episode. They meshed the 3 timelines together so perfectly. You are on the edge of your seat from the 1st second and feel so much relief in the final szene... its just perfect! Some Trivia for your Information. When Alan Tudyk left the Firefly set after the series was canceled, he took that button as a keepsake. When Joss Whedon announced that he would be searching for a way to bring the show back as either a series or a feature film, Alan sent him the button with a note that said, "When your miracle gets here, just hit this button.". Its the same line he said to Mal in this episode.

I once read somewhere that someone recommended watching this episode last, and that it would have been a better season finale because you got the backstory of everyone, but also the last bit when Mal says "Y'all gonna be here when I wake up?" has more impact knowing that the show was cancelled, but there's the movie for "when he wakes up."

@@CaptainFrost32 Well, to be fair... It's not like Objects in Space was originally meant to be the final episode. It was in the can and The Message was being filmed when they got the word about Fox's... jackassery. It seems more like Objects was originally intended to be Joss' kind-of-traditional mid-season big ep - and if nothing else, Jayne's reference to River as a mind-reader in Message definitely speaks to its original placement. I definitely see why Joss Whedon chose to make it the official last ep - definitely reaching for, and achieving more - but I'm convinced that it wasn't the original.

"Out Of Gas" is a masterpiece of television writing. We get a nice bit of background story of 9 different people, all with 9 different reasons to call Serenity their home. It's the perfect touch at the end of the episode when we see the ship salesman was trying to sell Mal a different ship but his heart was set on Serenity. It is at this point that I like to post how the crew all represent certain aspects of Mal. Maybe it's just me that likes to think about it this way? Also, in an abstract way - Serenity is the tenth member of the crew. Aspects of Mal: Zoe - Military Comradery and command structure Wash - Wit, seeing the humorous side of things Inara - Love and the inability to express it (Brought on by the war in Mal's case) Shepherd Book - Religion (repressed by War PTSD for Mal), the belief & desire to do right Kaylee - Optimism in life, (Also repressed by War PTSD for Mal), Love and devotion for Serenity Simon - Loyalty & protection (Simon to River, Mal to his crew) Jayne - Mercenary, Pessimistic view of the world (For Mal - Brought on from the war), Justifies doing crime. River - Mental anguish at the hands of the Alliance. Feeling lost. The need to get away from the Alliance. (For Mal - Brought on from the war) Serenity - The ship is the 10th member of the crew. It represents the freedom Mal is seeking. (Mal's inability to settle under Alliance rule, his desire to wander).

All the actors loved this show so much that when they get cast in other things they offen slip in quotes and other little "wink's and nods" to the Browncoat audience. @@julesreacts It's not so much behind-the-scenes stuff that I'm recommending, it's the deleted scenes. Outtakes are fun -- they show the cast as real people enjoying each other and the job. But, ... deleted scenes help you understand the characters more. They contain information that the writers and producers thought was important to advance the story but they had to be cut for the sake of time. A quick KZbin search will give you several deleted scenes and your appreciation for the show will grow with each one you watch. My favorite is the one in which Zoey explains what Mal did in the war.

A fan favorite for sure. By the way, "She's a real beauty" is also how Kaylee describes River in the pilot. This episode is an amazing example of having to satisfy the "notes" sent in by the network and coming up with something brilliant. The executives, apparently thinking their own viewers were idiots, demanded that the next episode once again explain all the relationships, etc. That's why they establish that Wash and Zoe are married, Book is a preacher, and the Tams are fugitives in the dialog at the dinner table. And the flashback scenes explain a lot more, and somehow it all works so seamlessly that it's hard to believe it was done to satisfy the suits.

I am really admiring the control that you exhibit to not just binge all of the series! This episode really displays some of Joss Whedon's best script-writing. It is complex with so many flashbacks and flash-forwards, and all of that builds the drama while showing the funny moments that brought each character into the family, and in the end we realize that the most interesting character of them all may be the ship herself, which froze in Mal's gaze while the salesman was trying to sell him a completely differnt vessel. That other vessel might have been a much better value, but Mal went with his heart. By the way, lets all give a few cheers for Bester, the "genius mechanic" who is the Pete Best of Firefly. Bester might not be a very good mechanic, but he really knows how to find a great woman! Without Bester, Mal would never have discovered Kaylee. Once we have explored the family's genesis, we come back to Jules who, like Mal, goes with her heart on this episode. Of course you cried. That's just great writing. Thanks for the great reaction!

@@julesreacts This is also likely how the rest of us feel and when we get sad about the shows early demise we can only jump back to the beginning and watch it again (including the movie) and look for elements we may have missed. Also it helps to try and watch other shows these fine actors appear in to help their careers in any way we can as a kind of thank you for their contribution to this fine show, and then mutter curses in the general direction of Fox for their bonehead decision.

How good is this show? How good are these recent episodes? It’s still happening. And each one is so different. No formula, just great ideas, each one developing characters more and more. Hold on tight, still got so much goodness on the way. “Y’all gonna be here when I wake up?” “We’ll be here.” “Good… that’s good.” How comforting would Book’s rich basso voice be after all Mal went through? Love it!

I am SO glad you loved this episode! It's my absolute favorite of the series. There are many other episodes that are wonderful or hilarious or interesting as well, but to me this episode has it all... The music, the lighting changes (going back and forth depending on where the scene is in the timeline of the episode, from the golden hues of the happier past to the dark cold blue of the more current crisis present), the story structure of flashbacks and forwards, the intensity of it from moment 1 as we wonder what the heck happened to Mal and where is everyone else?! Plus all the sentimental parts of the flashbacks showing Mal and Zoe meeting everyone else, and then the wonderfully heartfelt ending that always makes me cry, when you see that the speech we heard at the very beginning was a salesman trying to talk up a totally different ship... while Mal gazes at the firefly ship off in the distance, clearly in love already with what would become Serenity. It's all just so beautiful. My absolute favorite, without a doubt. It's the most gorgeously written episode ever. ❤❤❤ P.S. I''m with you. I wanted to hear Simon's funny hospital story, lol!

Mal had a lot on his mind when he divided everyone into the shuttles. Shuttle 1: Inara, Kaylee, Jayne, Book. Shuttle 2: Zoe, Wash, Simon, River. Serenity: Mal. The groups had maximum survival odds. Book would keep Jayne in line, Inara can pilot her shuttle better than anyone except Wash and would take Kaylee under her wing, and Jayne (as shown in the first episode) is mightily protective of her. Zoe would honor Mal's goal to protect the Tams using her Browncoat and black-market contacts. Simon was needed to mend her injuries (obviously). Wash never would abandon her, and his piloting talent is crucial. By remaining behind, Mal had a longer timeframe before the air could kill him. If he abandoned Serenity, the responding salvager could have full claim to her and everything inside. After the catalyzer had changed hands, the intruders retreated and waited for Mal to bleed out. It would make the salvage legal again. Also, we know from the transfusion that Mal and Wash have the same blood type.

This episode is by far my favorite and the most brilliantly-written episode of them all. A commenter, @Smido83 explained it to perfection: "They meshed the 3 timelines together so perfectly... its just perfect!" I 100% agree my friend. The writing is soooooo good in this episode that the 3 timelines aren't really confusing at any point. To be able to do that takes time, patience, writing and no doubt re-writing it, to make it flow so perfectly and not be confusing to the viewer at any point. Absolutely brilliant writing in my opinion. We also learn so much about how they all got together. A brilliant episode that stands above all of the other wonderful episodes I thought were the best at the time!

An amazing reaction to an amazing episode! I don't know if I could say what my favourite episode is overall, but this one is definitely up there for sure. I love that we got to see how it all began, with Mal choosing the ship and each of the original crew members (Kaylee's introduction was certainly not expected!). I also love the way they filmed this episode, the difference between the bright, colourful flashbacks contrasting with the bleak, cold tones of what was currently happening. It made the scenes with Mal struggling through the ship trying to fix the engine even more nerve-wracking because it just looked so hopeless. Of course it had to be Zoe that decided to come back though, she's been with Mal from the start and there's no way she would leave him to die alone. Thanks for another great video Juliette!
