It was my gateway into Band Maid making me want to hear more. I is still fun to watch and see how young they look. Saiki, the lead singer, was 19 in the video and the others were 21-22 range, approximately. My second song was Onset and it went from there. Enjoyed the reaction Jules, catch ya on discord and twitch some. Edit: Ignore the negative comments, some people aren't happy unless they are being mean.

Jules i was searching for something totally different & "Don't You Tell Me" live got suggested by YT. I'd heard of B-M but never listened to them & as soon as i heard that first song there was no turning back for me. Maidiac for life ever since.🙂

My first was 'Domination', followed by 'Play', Puzzle' and 'Moratorium'. All on the same day. I was a fan club and BM Prime member in 5 days. I had ordered their back catalogue from Japan by the end of that week! I'm 56 from the UK, I have been around a bit and seen 'the best' live. Band-Maid are the best all round band I have ever heard, full stop. In essence they are FUN, plus they are very talented and lovely people lacking ego's.

DICE was my first Band-Maid tune. Which is now about 18 months ago. It was love at first listen. I'm 65 and had been waiting 40+ years for a band to hit me with music that grabbed my soul. I listen every day. If I can depend on any band to put out another album of great songs it's Band-Maid.

Mine was Real Existance (back in 2020) and I thought they were a fluke or something. And then, I listened to Dice and they were a real deal. I never come into my mind that all girl band exist and its a hard rock band.

The next major stage in their evolution you should react to is the MV of 'Alone'. It was the first song they composed and wrote that was released by their then label. You can see them truly evolve from Thrill. The ladies are now around 27 and 30 years old I think. Saiki being the youngest.

Last night Nippon Unofficial posted the Band Maid Nippon radio show featuring Miku and Saiki as hosts. They were talking about the record company breaking up Band-Maid just before this hit. The record company said they wanted Miku and Siaki to form a new pop duo called Dance Maid. They said they were horrified and cried when they heard. Saiki said she did not sign up for that. Then Thrill hit and saved them.

Yes this was my first introduction to them. Kept popping up on my KZbin feed. And I originally blew it off about three or four times. And I figured you know what let me see what this is about. And that's for me is where it all began. You could say my Band-Maid cherry was popped with this song. Going back around 3 years ago. I had basically given up on rock music for close to a decade or so. As a amateur bass player for 35 years. I started to gravitate towards more of jazz and big band swing music from the '40s to the '70s. Band-Maid helped reinvigorate and re-establish my interest in rock again. And these ladies, or should I say. These five phenomenally talented beautiful musician from Japan. Is the number one reason for that ! Keep up the good work, stay safe and be well always !

The Thrill is a rough diamond, your metaphor is wonderful. They are trying to further polish the finished diamond and shed new light. With the aftershock in October, they have already begun preparations to surprise the world. A pre-concert in Japan may be the experiment. I can't wait for the next event on May 10th, Maid Day.

Thrill was my introduction to Band Maid a little over a year ago. It has a nice groove, the drums are solid, the guitar has a nice crunch and the singing is great, but there isn't much meat to it...until the bass solo (who does a bass solo?) then Kanemi's solo. At that point I realized that they weren't just some pretty girls playing rock band: there was some talent there and I wanted to see how much talent they have. A year later I still haven't found the depth of their talent, nor have they, but a great part of the journey is watching them grow, discovering what they are capable of.

Before Thrill was released, they were about to be disbanded. The video got 2 million views in 2 weeks, thus Band Maid became the phenomenon they have become.

@@JulesTheHuman She has stated that at the time she didn't even know what a chord was. No prior musical education, no prior experience of playing any instrument. Just a bit of singing. An 18 year old southern girl from the sticks, but with the sheer will-power laser focus to go to Tokyo to become an entertainer - what kind of entertainer... to be decided... but definitely showbiz. Effectively Miku is the original format "IT-girl" - not entirely clear what her real talents were at the outset, but whatever they are, she clearly had "IT" from the get-go. Forming a dedicated hard rocking band might have been the least expected development though.

"Thrill" was my first exposure to Band-Maid, or J-rock for that matter, not long after Covid hit. I had witnessed a little K-pop but wasn't interested. My first view of this "Thrill" video had me intrigued. I immediately went for a second video which was the old (Zepp?) version of "Play" live. I was pretty much blown away. Then, "Domination" live made me a full-blown Maidiac. My newest obsession is Nemophila.

The Band were going to be dropped and Miku and Saiki were asked if they would like to go into a new Dance Maid. Which horrified them both and caused Miku to tears. But this video and track saved the band. I wish I could be critical but this band just does everything so well. They continue to grow and improve through pure hard work and stubbornness, Misa and her slap bass and hiding her pick between her fingers is quite a skill. But the music and their skill are just a delight. They are all in their early thirties I think. Saiki may be a little younger, late 20s.

Without Miku there'd be no BAND-MAID..And without this MV that dream MAY have died.....Though I believe they said if the Rec Label had wound them up as BAND-MAID...they would have done something else together.....Which given how well they gelled..I can believe...But would it have been the band we all love?.....who knows. "Thrill" was written by Kentarō Akutsu. They have maintained a good relationship with him, and I believe they are grateful to him for mentoring them when they were first starting out. He also wrote "Fate" from World Domination and "Smile" (the B side of the Bubble); both of them are fantastic songs. This video came out a little over a year after they first started. Their initial sound was more like The Go-Go's but they turned to a more hard rock sound and Thrill was an example.

Yes it was my first. I have always been a fan of bands with female front person. Started with Heart in the seventies and has led me to a lot of great rock and metal bands. But Band Maid was different. Not just the fact that they are all women, but they had a sound that I had heard before but never done this well. They nail every aspect of what is a great rock song. And they have only gotten better. And it really doesn't matter that it isn't their original song. The talent of this band lets them excel at whatever they do. The many aspects to this band are to much list but that is my main reason for being a Maids fan for life.

when they made this video back in 2014 Miku the rhythm guitarist and 2nd singer/lyric writer couldn't play the guitar at all, they literally hung it round her neck for the video saying don't kill anyone with it, after saiki refused to wear it. just to show you how far she (after learning to play from Kanami the lead guitarist) and the others have improved watch ONSET kzbin.info/www/bejne/o4fVf2CglLqWZrc many have said its like a Jam session and is known as Saiki's pee break song. This video was their last chance by their management to get them noticed (which it did in the west thank god) and if it didn't they were done as a group, they would have been broken up and Miku and Saiki (who were the two under contract) would form a singing dance due called "Dance Maid" neither girl was happy about this and both cried saying "that's not what we came to Tokyo to do" this is one of the main reasons the band do seem to have a soft spot for their overseas Masters and Princesses. also just to add the way Misa slapps and pops her base and the way she tucks her pick into her hand is a joy to watch up close the way she transitions from picking to slapp and back again is just cool to watch

This song set the track or foundation for the Band-Maid we know today! Saved the band! I got the KZbin suggestion after looking into Baby Metal and there was Band-Maid "Thrill". I had no idea of what they were, but they seemed interesting. "Thrill" hit me like a freight train, next was "Dice", and there was no turning back after that! The Pigeon Hole had me and I haven't looked back since! Another couple of milestones for these amazing ladies are "Alone", their first self written song allowed onto an album, and "Before Yesterday", great song but meaningful as the video footage is from Band-Maid's first stop on their first USA tour, Seattle I believe, and convinced MISA to stay with the band. It’s so fun to see them play this song now - there’s a whole tongue-in-check aspect to it and the band just has fun with it. Since the lyrics “Breaking new gate” is now understood by them & the fans to be “bad English” Miku is known to just kind of deliver it in a quiet deadpan monotone that’s hilarious 😂 Check out the official live video. But Omar it’s core, it’s just a great straight ahead rock song and they kill the delivery. And when they go into Misa’s bass solo, you know this is no ordinary rock band - no gimmick band - they are serious about their chops - and, yes, they are going to prove it if they have to. “Breaking new gate” could be seen to mean a change of stride in the music they were playing.Taking bigger strides forward in there style and dreams..Yes gate in that meaning is spelt gait...but ..But we know how bad these translations can be....That's how I see it and have no problem with the lyric.

@Surfing Yes, That's why we take a bow when entering a God's field. "breaking a new gate" doesn't sound wierd for Japanese because we often use that phrase(in Japanese, Open new doors for you). Maybe back then, there is no english speaker arround. "go to unseen world" "hello to the world" "anouns your arrival" are kinda same for me. Also, I know my English may sounds wierd 😂

They had put out their first album prior to "Thrill", which was very pop-y and commercial sounding. It went nowhere, and management planned to drop them (the girls didn't know). They used the last of their budget to make a music video and the girls convinced the label to go with "Thrill" instead of the A side of their recent single release. This was the musical direction Miku had planned from the beginning. When "Thrill" gained traction, they were able to convince the label to let their sound get heavier, although the second album was still written mostly by outsiders.

Misa primarily plays with a pick and tucks the pick between her index and pad of her palm when she slaps. She does this on the fly. FYI, during the Christmas concert commentary, they mentioned that the record label CEO was going to shut them down after this MV. We need to find that guy who posted this video to FB because he was instrumental in what we see today. As Chase Carneson (YTber) muttered, "We need to buy him a pair of shoes," Po! (emphasis: me here).

Age wise, the band were in their early 20s when 'Thrill" was recorded. Alkane recently had her 31st birthday. When Band-Maid were formed in 2013 there were already many other all-female bands of varying descriptions so far from unique, apart from the maid costumes. You might like to check out FLiP especially their live shows, and Gacharic Spin, again they're very energetic.

If you look up their TVtropes page it has all their dates of birth (and a lot of other fun info). When this was filmed, Akane (oldest) was 23 and Saiki (youngest) was 20. Honestly, I think filming yourself reading and reacting to the TVtropes page would be fun. I don't think anyone else has done that.

If this video hadn't gone viral they were going to break up. When they found this song, they knew that this was their sound. Miku was using a Rickenbacker 620 because one of her favorite singers, Sheena Ringo sings about it in one of her songs. But the Zemaitis was better for their sound. It's only in a couple early videos.

love your reactions Jules, very thoughtful and insightful and i'm happy you're enjoying the Maids. still tons of great music to discover and i'm enjoying your ride. There is a really interesting story behind Thrill. "Thirll" was the B side to the single "愛と情熱のマタドール" (Matador of love and passion). the record label wanted to release 愛と情熱のマタドール as the bands first video but BAND-MAID wanted to do the B side song Thrill as they said it represented more the sound they wanted. The label went along with it but we recently discovered that the label(Gump Records) was going to end BAND-MAID if the video did poorly and on its release there was very little notice of it in Japan but someone posted the video to a USA Facebook page devoted to Japanese music and it went viral with 2 million views in 2 weeks and thus BAND-MAID was saved and the rest is history. Sorry to hear about the haters Jules, but i think you're doing a great job. please just ignore them Cheers from Canada

It just occurred to me, it seems kind of illogical to say "Your first video is your last chance." I don't know what Platinum Passport was thinking (although they had a different individual manager early on, who was doing ridiculous stuff like telling Miku to stop saying "Po." Seems like perhaps they had the opposite trajectory of what happens to many Western bands, where the A&R rep that signs the band leaves the label and suddenly the band doesn't have that supporter fighting for them within the company anymore - the Maids seem to have gotten a _more_ supportive manager.) EDIT: I may be being unfair to the first manager here; as someone else pointed out, maybe they were trying to conserve budget but not making headway, and so decided to go all-in on a music video. I think it was on the last Band-Maid Nippon radio show that they also said the plan would have been to have Saiki and Miku continue as "Dance-Maid," which is bizarre because Miku says she is a horrible dancer 😄 Although they do make an excellent comedy duo!

"What's another word for thesaurus?" - Steven Wright. BTW your pronunciations are spot on to my ear, among the best I've heard for someone new to the band. A lot of people forget that the second "a" in Akane is pronounced the same as the first and that there's no stressed syllable. Your pronunciation of Saiki led me to believe that you're not unfamiliar with Japanese.

They were 20-23 at the time of filming this MV which was about 8 years ago. This is their very first MV. The song was B-side of their single, but Maids unanimously chose this song over the A-side song. If they had chosen the A-side song for their MV, Band-Maid would have been disbanded in 2015 and Dance-Maid would have been formed instead.

The production company plan for "Dance-Maid" from early 2015 was a very recent revelation to the fans by Miku and Saiki on the last issue of their Wednesday radio show they have been doing for a while. Apparently it would have featured only they two of them, and at the time they both cried in rage and frustration over such a lame idea. "We didn't come to Tokyo for THIS!" as Saiki put it. But then "Thrill" went on KZbin, was picked up by a FaceBook page introducing Japanese popular music, and suddenly got 2 million hits in two weeks time. As the Maids have put it "Thrill", and the fans (not to forget), saved Band-Maid back then.

There really nothing to not like about Thrill. Sure, it lacks some of the layers and sophistication of their newer stuff, but it's still an infectious hard rockin' song with great vocals and kick a$$ bass/guitar solos, among other things that make them so GREAT to this day! 🤘🤩🤘

Thrill displayed Band-Maid, the uncut diamond - full of potential and promise to Band-Maid 2020 - 2022 Band-Maid is now the cut, polished, and refined diamond realized in the present. This 2015 video was the make-it-or-break-it video for Band Maid. In fact at this point Miku couldn't even play the guitar since she thought she was only going to be a vocalist in the band. However this video did so well they decided that Band-Maid was going to be a successful project and that gave them the exposure and financial wherewithal to get started. This is before Misa and Saiki started dressing Gothic. Band-Maid is Jimmy Page approved!

Seems Misa has confirmed in interview that it was Miku who first suggested hard rock more in this style was a better fit for the band, but clearly they were all on board with that. Which was why they managed to convince the agency to let them make the MV for the B-side of their single, not the A-side which was a kind of Latin pop "Ai to jonetsu no matador".

You are one of the more astute reactors around. Can definitely see the current Band-Maid emerging. Saiki recently turned 28 and Akane is 31. Miku and Kanami are 30 and MISA is 29. Check out ALONE as their first fully written/arranged song. Keep up the good work Jules. BAND-MAID is a very Awesome band from beginning to now. Peace.

This is a Japanese band that combines rock music with traditional Japanese musical instruments and and it sounds amazing. They are not so heavy but that doesn't mean anything - they are really cool. I would say there are quite a few non-Americans known for slap bass. Davie504 ... probably others but that's all I can think of off the top of my head. MISA's slap technique has gotten quite a bit more economical over the years. She doesn't draw her hand back as far so she is much quicker.

What's next, Jules? A Golden Lovers t? Love baby BAND-MAID, but they got so much better when unleashed to write their own stuff. With the early stuff they're just maximizing what they were given. I think the thing that stands out most to me watching this is just how uncomfortable MISA looks in her outfit/shoes. Probably mostly the shoes. Besides, the "shod assassin" just doesn't have the same ring to it.

OK so you might not want to pause during any solo just saying also this entire album rocks only a few reactors did this entire album but if you want to be blown away how good they were back then then react to each song on new beginnings straight up rock shake that and freezer my favorite but they all are fantastic you could be one of the few to do the entire album and not that it matters but miku wasn't play on this one the goddess shredder was doing what she does best SHRED

He’s been a professional musician longer than I’ve been alive. He played bass with Emilio Navaira for pretty much his whole career. He has a Latin Grammy and plaques for playing on the albums that sold a bunch. He traveled the world and stuff quite a bit when I was younger, now he does more playing in Texas. We had a music interview podcast for a while as well 😊

When you say about Band-Maid "coming on the scene out of nowhere, dressing maid outfits and just rocking"... it's not the truth. This is the band MIXX in 2010 kzbin.info/www/bejne/mIbIcmqqYs-sqLs, three year before Band-Maid. Also another female band, Doll$Boxx in their first MV slightly joke about the maid oufits, a year before the fundadation of the Maids. Finally, the maid/rock blend was not a instant success from the beginning... the first three years were tough... they were exploited in little shows, Saiki lost her voice and had to undergo surgery, and Misa was just about quit.😆

And before that there was the "Kanzen Maid Sengen", which was an idol group formed by maids working at the At Home Café in Akihabara, i.e. the same place Miku worked at as a maid when first coming to Tokyo. Nice reaction and cool song, but it is a bit plain by today's Band-Maid standards. It is from a time when their record label did not allow them to compose their own music. In fact they don't play it live that often nowadays.
