Train services are disrupted across Britain as thousands of railway workers stage their second strike of the week.
Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union at Network Rail and 13 train operators walked out after talks failed to resolve a bitter row over pay, jobs and conditions.
Just one in five trains are running on Thursday and these are mostly restricted to main lines, with around half of the network closed.
Services started later than normal at 7.30am and will shut down early at 6.30pm.
The Government announced plans to change the law to enable businesses to supply skilled agency workers to plug staffing gaps during industrial action.
Ministers pointed out that, under current trade union laws, employment businesses are restricted from supplying temporary agency workers to cover for strikers, saying it can have a “disproportionate impact”.
The Government said the legislation will repeal the “burdensome” legal restrictions, giving companies affected by strike action the freedom to tap into the services of employment businesses which can provide skilled, temporary agency staff at short notice.
Network Rail welcomed the move but Labour and unions condemned it as a “recipe for disaster”.

Since privatisation, the UK has one of the worst run rail systems in the world which is essentially a cash cow for the directors and shareholders of the private companies involved. Honestly - if Strikes do NOT cause disruption then they're pointless. They're meant to cause disruption. From the 19th century onwards that was the point. We won't work until you pay us more. The problem is that our main remaining unions are all public services. When the workers of a factory went on strike, the factory owners lost money; the bosses were harmed. When teachers or nurses go on strike, no one with the authority to pay them are harmed; only the public. THAT is why the public no longer support strikes as a concept.

This overlooks the issue though. Putting the blame on the unions for causing the harm is too shortsighted. These public workers are very much the ordinary people. They feel the brunt of their own strikes too. The government grandstanding against these average people are what's harming them. I'm surprised that the challenge comes from the railway as they do better than most. However, i firmly agree with their reasoning. we can afford to pay NGO's with citizens wages (forced by government policy... like pfizer). and yet our finances, and real product or service providers have to foot the bill for companies that provide little to nothing (and sometime a deficit to everyday people eg. paying for hotels for illegal immigrants). Bang on and about time someone thought about the right way to build back better.

They did provide the answer, even though the question wasn't asked. Inflation is being driven by external costs on essentials. If you ask people to not eat there will be riots. Wages have to keep pace with the cost of essentials However, we do need to take money out of the system to counter inflation. Therefore, we need less dividends and bonuses paid out This counters inflation without causing painful hardship for average people

She is wrong. Inflation is not the rise in the cost of living. Inflation is the increase in the M2 money supply. The rise in prices of goods and services is a consequence of years of money printing. In order to bring Inflation under control, the Bank of England would have to put interest rates above the CPI, at around 10 to 12%. They can't ever do this as the would collapse the Financial system, every bank on the High Street would fail, the stock market would implode and the housing market completely collapse. Putting up interest rates by a quarter or half a percent is like your house going up in flames, and when the fire brigade arrives they have a bucket of water to throw on the fire. Inflation will continue to rise until people are calling for 20 and 40% pay rises. The paper or fiat money system is collapsing, we are in the foothills of hyperinflation, and there's nothing the goverment or central bank can do about it.

Because she works for Talk TV, and that’s what they do. They like to say they are putting the questions on behalf of the public, which is a load of cobblers, most people understand exactly why the rail workers are striking. Workers have had enough of the total inequality in this country. I agree with Eddie Dempsey, and as a volunteer of an advice bureau, I could never understand why WTC and CTC, as it was then, was paid to some employees of our largest companies who were making huge profits, but not paying their workers a living wage, so Tax Credits were given as benefits, and who paid for them, us the Tax payers of course. Now we have Universal Credit so nothing has change, and the Tax payer boosts the profits of companies and the share holder benefits. Boy is it time for a change.

Julia's done some fine work on the woke stuff but she's way off here, record profits and they're not even talking to these people. Mick lynch the only one coming out of this with any credibility. Get round the table you clowns.

My wife works for Northern rail and earns 30k plus on a clerical grade. She's in the RMT and did NOT vote to strike as she feel its wrong. She got full pay during the pandemic. And feels very lucky to have the salary she earns.

That is decent for clerical, however i bet she has better conditions than most. Ppl r missing the point with the rmt union, they are there to help the workers, have better contracts etc. Every industry should have one. When threats of redundancy and more profits going to those its harsh on the workers, but this happens in all industries.

@@rossblack9559 When the people that pay your wages number in the millions, it's so much easier to withhold your labour. Try doing that working for a small family owned business with very small profit margins.

Inflation busting pay rises are all very well but it will inevitably fuel inflation effecting everyone, especially those who can’t hold the country to ransom and get high pay rises. If we want pay rises without inflation and without making this country and everyone in it poorer we have to work more efficiently and modernise. If we don’t want to do that, while other countries are, then we just go backwards. We should have learnt this from the 70s.

"Corporate Profits in the United Kingdom increased to [an all time high of ] 139210 GBP Million in the first quarter of 2022 from 128935 GBP Million in the fourth quarter of 2021" Source ONS The wealth driven through corporate profits should be redistributed to working people. Explain again how pay rises in line with current inflation will harm this further?
