It's hard for me to just hear and repeat. Can you tell me the notes (or corresponding note numbers in the key) so I can use the piano and figure it out? Mostly the intro Thank you

Julia would you take a look at Courtney Hadwins cover of Harry Stiles Sign of the Times on her Vevo channel. I know you liked her earlier video. Take a look and give us your breakdown of her voice as it continues to evolve. Thanks and be safe.

don't singers use run/riffs to compensate their inability to sustain beautiful high notes? runs and riffs are artistic expression, you should not copy others.

Im sure there are some people that use a riff or run to avoid holding out a note if they feel it doesn’t suit them. There are also those that sustain and belt every time and could lean towards doing that more to avoid runs . At the end of the day both types of people are not wrong and are simply trying to play to their strengths and hopefully just trying to express themselves musically. Sometimes if we as people lead towards one side we can judge the other without realizing it. Then are people that could do both runs and sustained notes and they choose what feels right to express in the moment. You have a great point that we shouldn’t just copy and paste peoples runs all the time. To me it’s like songwriting. We get inspired by songs that move us so and in learning them it unlocks inspiration to then go write our own. Learning a run/riff that we like is a great way to grow ourselves and then unlock inspiration to create our own and express ourselves. That’s the motivation for me when it comes to this stuff. Sometimes it’s helpful to look up a tutorial for a more complex run to help get it right and this channel is AMAZING at helping with that.

Not at all, there are talented singers that can sustain beautiful high notes as well as do riffs and runs, they are not limited. In order to create your own style and artistic expression, you need to first learn many different scales as well as all sorts of melodic patterns in order to master this. Every artist has gotten their influence from someone else, in order to learn and grow! The end goal is to create your own masterpiece with the skill you've acquired, but it has to start from somewhere.

Julia Broderick yes you are so correct. The same way we can hear Etta James influence in Christina Aguilera. She got it from Eta and then styled and riffed it in her own way. We even say it’s Christina’s signature style when we mock her but in fact Etta birthed it. Christina just individualized what she learned from Etta like you said Julia. Christina even says she was influenced by her as well as her all time favorite singer.
