On June 25, 2024, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange was able to walk free following a deal with the US government. Does this surprising end to the publisher’s many years of criminal prosecution and imprisonment signal a positive outcome for press freedom?
Turkish journalist Can Dündar, who was also imprisoned on similar charges in Turkey and now lives in exile in Germany, and co-director Sarah Mabrouk followed the Assange case for the last six months before his release. Dündar sees it as the most important trial for press freedom in this century. In this documentary, Dündar decides not to focus on the controversial figure of Assange, but instead on his most controversial publication: “Collateral Murder”, a video which shows possible war crimes committed by US soldiers in 2007 in an attack in Baghdad during the Iraq war. The recording shows journalists and Iraqi civilians being gunned down by US soldiers in an Apache helicopter.
Dündar’s investigations take him from Iceland to the US and Iraq, as he follows the story of the infamous video. He tracks down one of the only two Iraqi survivors of the attack - a boy who was 10 years old at the time - and a US soldier who was directly involved in the incident. Dündar invited the two to meet for the first time 17 years later. The encounter makes the disturbing long-term consequences of war and the lasting pain on both sides vividly apparent.
Following the publication of the video, the US military conducted an internal investigation, after which none of the soldiers were brought to trial. For Julian Assange, however, it was a different story: It was the first time in American history that publishing information the government considered secret was successfully treated as a crime.
Dündar was able to accompany Julian Assange’s wife, Stella, and their two children on one of their last visits to Belmarsh maximum security prison and to the hearings at Britain's High Court. Although Assange is now free, Dündar asks what the ruling means for journalism. What will happen if journalists around the world stop reporting on war crimes, corruption or government wrongdoing for fear of conviction under an espionage law? The long-term implications of the Assange case are only just beginning to emerge. The film tells a gripping and highly topical story about the fight for truth.

And these types of war crimes continue in the world. A very clear example of them is the genocide currently happening to the Palestinians by Israel, with the assistance of missile and arms sales from the United States and Germany, resulting in the deaths of around 30,000 people, mostly children and women. The intrusion into other countries, invading and committing acts of crimes against humanity, persists, and the media continues to support this, both in the Middle East and Latin America. It’s essential to shed light on these hidden truths and expose the impact of war on innocent lives.

Depends on your perspective. I guess when people learn about this in isolation while also being told that Hezbollah is a benign ‘people’s revolution’ as Assange did in his RT project in 2012, then it becomes propaganda. The reality is that Islamic extremism is not benign, and Assange is well aware that it isn’t. He just supports violence when it’s in support of his ideology.

I'm an Assange activist that has spent the last 9 years fighting to free Assange. I have watched and listened to the collateral murder video more times than I can count. Literally hundreds of times. It haunts me. I have been with veterans that completely break down when they see or hear it. To see these beautiful, good men seek healing with each other is a small mercy. I hope they find some peace. Freeing Julian has brought me some peace but there is no escaping the reality of the world we are living in. We all have to demand am end to all war. Period. We can't keep doing this to one another. We are killing more than people, we are killing our humanity. I know that after watching this many people will pray for these survivors. I'm asking you to do one more thing - make a couple phone calls to your representatives and tell them that you want to end all of our wars. Talk to your family and friends and ask them to stop feeding their children to the war machine. 22 veterans a day commit suicide. There are no winners in war. 💜

My concern is that many are driven into war by socio economic factors. Some see opportunities to gain skills, education, and for some its just a job. By the time they realise the hell they've in, the damage is done. In with the next group. So this should probably be another way of measuring a country's level of success and development, whether people join the army because they have to, or because they sense a duty.

Dear Ethan McCord, your pain is heartbreaking, but I want you to know that you aren't done here on earth, that your life has immense purpose, and that the scars we carry today make us uniquely qualified to be of service, the very best kind of service, to those who are as deeply wounded and alone. Our experience, no matter how traumatic, is useful...it must be, or we will never make sense of it. We MUST make sense of it, or it eats us alive. Find a purpose for it, and give it a job, dear Ethan. We the wounded in Florida thank you.

If I may, I will join you, @cottagefarmflowers, with your message to Ethan, even if I might slightly disagree. Some things simply do not make sense, some things, like the ineffable horror you experienced, are more than some people can handle, but please Ethan, please remember you saved a life. This makes you an enormous person. Bigger than any soldier, bigger than any platoon commander, bigger and better than any President. I cannot fathom the depths of your sadness and self-destructive feelings, but from far away, I want to say, mate, you are a hero. I wish I knew you.

This was amazing and so powerfully moving is all I can say. To see the people involved and affected as real human beings in all their humanity and fragility, just brings it all home. Wishing Julian and his family all the best in his new start here in Australia. He should go down in history as nothing less than a most courageous fighter for freedom, truth and democracy. He did not become a martyr for it, thank goodness. Lord knows there's been too many of those.

Profound, raw, and liberating. Still, my heart is currently a mixed bag of feelings and extreme emotions, from anger to disbelief, from sadness to cautious joy. This has been one of the best documentaries I've ever seen. Thank you, DW, for the amazing work.

What a brilliant but heartbreaking documentary. Since Assange's release, I've seen snippets of Collateral Murder numerous times, with no sense of the lives of the people affected. To follow up on one of the children involved and see clearly the suffering that he still obviously carries today, was devastating. People say that time heals and that life moves on, but for victims of war crimes, you simply can never recover from that. And now we are seeing the same thing, and probably worse, in Gaza today. This is societal-wide trauma which can never be healed. We can't forget this!!! 😢😢😢

I was in tears watching the American solder cry because he recognized the damage he was doing by being part of the hate for muslims in America. I felt that in the video call Sajjad had to tell him directly how was his life destroyed after that minute. Right now, we have a lot of retired soldiers from Colombia going to fight in the side of Ukraine, a lot of them getting killed in the first month. I just feel this keep repeating and repeating it self, people believing they are fighting for the right side, in a war there is never a RIGHT side.

Watching this from Germany. Thanks DW for such a heartbreaking but necessary documentary. These people need to be seen and heard, these stories need to be told. We owe a lot to the people of Iraq. I cannot express how much I feel in pain for all of the civilian lives lost because the U.S decided to play God.
