Guitar prodigy, Julian Lage, came into the KPLU studios with his drummer, Tupac Mantilla, and bassist, Jorge Roeder, and finished their set with an as-yet unrecorded composition called "Welcoming Committee."

What I like about Julian is he never gets excessively showy. He has amazing chops and a very expansive technical repertoire, but even when he is on fire it always feels in service of the song. No endless meandering scale runs for no reason. That sort of restraint is the mark of a real musician.

Came here for Julian Lage but that drummer took most of my attention. Out of this world custom style.

Great performance, all three musicians are great - the percussion vibe is so good, the bass so dreamy and the guitar is exquisite

I dig the way the precussionist's gear choices and playing style serve the song! Great sound!

One of the comments below states "This sucks". Wow, how wrong can you be? Great player. Very, very cool and original trio. LOVE to see them in person. They should play the Musical Instruments Museum in Phoenix. Great venue for a trio like this.

Maybe a silly question, but I've noticed in most of the videos where Julian plays his Manzer Blue note that it's both plugged in and mic'd up. Why? Is the mic in front of the guitar to get some 'ambience'? Is it picking up something the pickup isn't?
@Fr3etd4nc3r7 жыл бұрын
sometimes the acoustic chime of the guitar is a desirable artefact in the sound of a jazz guitarist. He could have used a built in piezzo pickup for the acoustic sound, but as you probably know, the sound of a piezzo pickup is slightly different to the one recorded by a microphone. Julian seems to prefer the mic-ed acoustic sound mixed with the magnetic pickups. No alchemy in it, just personal preference.

those 16t note runs... can anyone explain how to do it like that, i know it will take another 10-50 years of practice but does anyone have any tips
@RudeBoy-hx1fn9 жыл бұрын
practice
@MetalUpYourAssTV9 жыл бұрын
the slower you practice, the faster youll be able to play like that.
@giobelen8 жыл бұрын
+vballmusicGod Are you referring to his phrasing on those 16th note runs? Or his accuracy? If you are referring to how accurately or cleanly Mr. Lage picks those 16th note runs, then I suggest that you use a metronome. (You don't have to buy one - there are lots on the internet.) Come up with a 16th note run/passage for you to practice with. Set the metronome at a slow tempo, then play the passage - make sure to play it as cleanly as you can. Once you can play it perfectly, increase the tempo on the metronome. Play it at this tempo. Perfect? Increase the tempo again. Keep doing this until you reach the desired tempo. What I do is add 5 BPM every time I am satisfied with how I played the passage. When I make mistakes, I subtract 3 BPM - I make sure to play it perfectly at this tempo before returning to the earlier tempo (adding 2 BPM), again attempting to play it perfectly. Tip: Don't tense your hands too much. The whole point of practicing slowly then gradually increasing the tempo is to avoid forming bad playing habits. Enjoy! :D

yeah i understand the technical part but id love to pick his brain on the theory and what he's thinking about how to come up with it, it sounds to me like very outside the scale playing but yet its so meaningful and relevant to the piece and chord changes, regardless, you're right part of it is how cleanly he's picking it all
@giobelen8 жыл бұрын
That is definitely something worth studying. I think it's also a matter of how Mr. Lage grew as a musician and how he built up his musical vocabulary. I guess it's a gradual thing, just like learning a language.
