The most incredible thing about Julian is that on the contrary of other guitarists, we can see that he's not focused on the technical aspect of his playing but he's focus on how joyful it is for him to play! And that's maybe why he's so damn good at playing music :)

@@blahqwe You nailed it. He mastered not only technique at an early age, but also theory. So much so that's it's completely organic to him. His solos are not demonstrations of technique, they're spontaneous compositions.

You know someone is talented when they can turn their own song upside down and inside out improvisationally, under pressure. I just spent three days trying to learn a basic guitar version of day and age from the Collings video and now to hear him do this with it demonstrates such a stratospheric talent. All hail Julian.

I'm in awe everytime I see him play, love his sound and timing. My fav jazz guitarist. I sometimes wish I had listened more jazz guitarists because I find it such an interesting genre, but I always struggled to stick with others and found it hard to fully get into jazz guitar music. I only enjoyed short burst of jazz. Finding, Julian was a revelation, a lucky find, I can listen to him play and listen again and love it each time, usually more than the last time! Thank you Julian 😊

Agreed. I mean, that's a pretty safe statement for most good musicians, like how "the book is better than the movie" tends to hold true. But there is something absolutely electric in the room when Julian plays. Such high level improv... you can feel him catching lightning out of the air.

This is incredible. He is simply the best. He just opened Pandoras box and Pandora loves him. This a copletely new approch to electric guitar. Since I heard John Mclaughlin with the Mahavisnue Orchestra in the early seventies nothing rocked the boat for me. Scofield was interesting and still is but what Julian does comes from another realm. You can not categorice it. It is a new artform.

Julian is one of those rare people who seems completely at ease with everything he does, and one of those rare artists who so completely embodies and embraces his being as a musician that the music becomes him. Literally this just Julian and his guitar letting us in on one hell of a conversation, while still remaining completely accessible to even non- hardcore jazz heads. (Of this generation only Jon Batiste comes to mind as having this gift.)

I believe he once said in an interview that between six and twelve years old he practiced six to eight hours a day. And he took lessons for years from accomplished jazz player Randy Vincent and classical lessons from the San Francisco Conservatory. He was a kid who had extraordinary talent, a work habit to match, and very high quality instruction.
