Hot Zone is a damn fine mini series. Once I started the first episode I could not stop and finished it in one sitting. NatGeo should do more scripted shows where neither drama/human stories nor science is sacrificied for the sake of the other.

Since the interview kind of segues into climate change, you know what I'm really concerned about? Forget about how global warming will affect the climate and kill off life on Earth in the long run, I get freaked out thinking about the permafrost melting because there can be thousands of strands of trapped airborne viruses, bacteria, and diseases from millions of years ago getting released into the atmosphere. It's the unknown and oversight that scares me. ... and it's not if the permafrost melts, it WILL melt.

Fortunately, or unfortunately depending on what you're hoping for... Epidemics rarely kill more than 10% of a population. Even assuming more than one of these diseases becomes a problem (which they likely won't as a disease has to have evolved to use your species to begin with) they likely won't result in more than an economic headache in the grand scheme of things. Understand the most important part of keeping people healthy is prevention. Good hygiene, safe sex and vaccines do most of the work. With antibiotics and antivirals covering for the rest. In other words it won't terribly effect wealthy nations... and even nations lacking the education and infrastructure can be focused on if need be. And honestly between American charities and Chinese economic interventions, the standard of living world wide has gone up quite a bit in the past 20 years. Meaning what we'd really have to worry about are outbreaks in war zones and nations under economic crisis (a reality even now). Both of which are entirely preventable and often caused by international feuds.

Funny, preppers have been worried about a pandemic since the 90s and now it has finally gone mainstream thanks to NatGeo. Margulies is doing a great public service since tropical disease specialists have been given anemic funding for research for far too long. Now if NatGeo could do a series about cyber warfare then it would be a real step in the right direction.

@@TreeFreak the quality of any given agency (whether federal or state) varies greatly from one administration to another. What happened in the past is not terribly relevant now. Moreover, the reality is that the CDC is all we have to counter pandemics across state lines. @carpetfluff35 Read The Hot Zone, or get it on audio book. I read it in high school and it's a good jarring read to put things into perspective. It's one of the reasons why I will never claim medical science is not needed and why vaccination is so important. The woman in question was Nancy Jaxx a pathologist I believe worked at USAMRIID. She became infected with Ebola when the whole thing went down. I believe she also becomes the Chief of Pathology. (Edit) Note this does not really spoil the book and just the amount of things that happen. Good read if one can get through it.
