Julie Driscoll Brian Auger & Trinity: Season of the Witch- Live

Brian Auger began his music career as a jazz pianist in the early 60s, playing in clubs around London. However by 1964 he had got himself a Hammond organ, and formed a new group called The Trinity with bassist Rick Brown and drummer Micky Waller, both previously of Cyril Davies' R&B All-Stars. This group saw greater success, playing harder R&B styled material. In 1965 they became part of The Steampacket, with singers Rod Stewart, Long John Baldry and Julie Driscoll, plus guitarist Vic Briggs. The Steampacket were an early 'supergroup' of sorts, but unfortunately never recorded a proper album and soon broke up. Auger then retained Brown, Driscoll and Briggs, and formed a new version of The Trinity with drummer Clive Thacker. Brown and Briggs left before long, and so when they came to record in 1967 the band consisted of Brian Auger (organ/vocals), Julie Driscoll (vocals), Gary Boyle (guitar), Roger Sutton (bass) and Clive Thacker (drums).
Open was released in 1967, credited to Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger & The Trinity. It turned out to be a very interesting, experimental record, mixing jazz, R&B and rock style, the band augmented with a horn section. The first side (labelled 'Auge') featured the band without Driscoll, and was mostly instrumental except for one track which Auger sang (one of the tracks was also a solo piano performace from Auger). On the second side of the record (labelled 'Jools'), Auger took a backseat and Driscoll sang. It included some excellent covers of The Staple Singers' "Why (Am I Treated So Bad)" and Donovan's "Season Of The Witch".
Despite being such an interesting release, Open did not sell well initially, probably because most people couldn't quite work out what to make of it. However in 1968 the band had a #5 hit with a cover of the Bob Dylan / Rick Danko classic "This Wheel's On Fire", which became the best-known version of the song in Britain. Subsequently the album sold much better.

at that time in the US I remember it was abysmal; probably the first actual live artist I saw was on a public television station (a Leon Russell thing on channel 13). most all we got was lip synch (as if we couldn’t tell?!?)

She's a great singer, maybe technically not THE best, she's certainly got a low singing voice but it's perfect for how she sings. And especially for this song, most definitely! And she expresses herself here *amazingly!* This song they make their own for sure! It gives me goosebumps... 🤗 So good... In theory the Hammond is a mechanical device and anyone should be able to get these sounds out of one, but Auger seems to produce sounds out of it that are entirely his own somehow. Quite stunning.

I haven't yet heard a version of "Season of the Witch" that I didn't like. The song has a simple structure that invites improvisation. Stills and Kooper did a nice job. Vanilla Fudge did the scariest version. This one may be the most musically interesting. Thanks for posting.

I was a teen in Jersey when I first heard this band. We all called her Jules, not Julie or Jools. I sounded different, and I must admit, I've ben looking for her, and Auger, under Jules. They were around the same year or two when Dylan, Donovan, and The Jeff Beck with Rod Stewart band were around. Didn't know til now that Rod, Brian, and Jules had a band earlier. The Super Session LP with Al Kooper, Mike Bloomfield, and Steve Still did a great "Witch", too. Catch Johnny Winter's first mention on the Super Session LP with Mike and Al sans Steve. He played a means blues gig and rocked the Fillmore that night.

I think I was 11 or 12 when I first heard Season of of Which played by Bloomfield, Still and Kooper. Those notes pretty much determined my bond with music. I must say it's the first time in 40 years I hear a version of Season of the Witch that doesn't make me feel missing that first one.

Season of the Witch isn't entirely Donovan's creation. Shawn Phillips wrote the music. I understand it was an impromptu thing that happened in, Mexico...[or it might have been Italy, it was so long ago, I forget exactly]...where the two met up . Shawn picked out the tune on his guitar while Donovan just started singing...coming up with lines while Shawn played. Donovan asked Shawn to come to England and record the number with him but they wouldn't let Shawn past Customs as he had been busted for pot possession some years earlier. Donovan went ahead and recorded it without Shawn and just never gave Him the credit. I do however dig Donovan's recording and I just love Brian and Julie's rendition of it. I had the original recording that was released for nearly thirty years but it went with all the rest of my collection of vinyl when I was burglarized 5 years ago.

Not sure if that is totally accurate. I know Shawn was heavily involved with Donovan musically at that time, and is noted on Wikipedia as the uncredited co-writer. He did perform extensively on Sunshine Superman sessions, which were mostly in LA. The info I have read is that the original studio version of this was recorded at Columbia Studios in LA during Donovan's first visit to the US in mid 1966, and on that cut he was backed by local seasioneers including former Modern Folk Quartet drummer Fast Eddie Hoh. Wikipedia credits Jimmy Page as the guitarist, but I doubt that, unless his part was overdubbed later, which seems unlikely. I have read another source which credits the guitar part to Donovan himself and apparently marked the first time he was recorded playing electric guitar.

They were the only band I ever saw in concert that had the audience demanding that the lead act get off the stage. It was the infamous concert in which Steppenwolf, whose bass player was wearing rabbit ears and a jockstrap, fell apart completely.
