When you do a contractor renovation, please include how not to get ripped off: how to ensure the work done meets your standards and stuff is not crooked, scratched, or missed spots of caulking; how to check the pricing so no surprises at the end with add on; how to find a trustworthy contractor because reviews online are misleading. Basically how to talk to and work with contractors to ensure we receive what we pay for versus arrogant rip offs. I'm sure your experience as a pro is quite different than a single parent woman without connections to the trade.

Painted my 25 year old bathroom white (BM Cotton Balls). Beautiful! Then the light fixture looked bad, replaced ugly brass bulb monster with sleek modern silver. Replaced vanity knobs. Looks great! Called the contractor to replace disgusting shower stall. You are so right- my contractor is NOT a designer! I’m not making another move until I think this through the rest of the way. I love all your suggestions and idea photos too !!! I love DIY projects. I’ve done so many in the last house. A master bath Reno gave me a 6 month headache. The contractor had a guy that did not know how to tile. He was slow as molasses & took a smoke break every 15 minutes while sitting on a 5 gal bucket in my driveway. It turned out so bad that we fired that contractor and just found another tile guy thru a friend. He had years of experience & it turned out beautiful. That was a big project and quite an experience! Lol.

I must admit that I was a bit intimidated by the title of this video being that I’d just completed my bathroom renovation, but thank you for briefing on the whole bathroom decor. Now I’m curious if you can touch on the subject of all things “laundry”, like laundry room decors, hacks, and such. Also, for those with limited space, small homes, or live in an apartment, where or how would you “hide” your dirty laundry, because it can become an eyesore.

Julie . I can’t thank you enough for posting this video. I was just about to begin a bathroom remodel in my mid century, modern fixer-upper. I used to be a professional fine artist and became a realtor. I feel like I have a fair amount of design experience however, there were definitely things I would have overlooked if I had not seen your video first. I implemented your idea about doing a long, horizontal shower niche, which turned out to be a showstopper. I also didn’t know anything about the Schluter strips and that would have been a costly mistake. I wish I could add a picture of the before and after, but your video really helped me to create the perfect Zen oasis in our small space. Thank you so much.!!

This was a hard lesson learned for me when working with natural stone: The sealer you use can completely change the color of the stone. Our bathroom was almost all done, and the colors looked amazing together - soft varied slate tones with a pale creamy yellow wall. Then the contractor used an "enriching" sealer on the slate, and the colors in the stone turned much deeper and warmer. We had to repaint the entire room because the paint completely clashed with the sealed tiles. It looks beautiful now with copper-colored paint on the walls. But it was not the serene look we were going for.

I love your 'Mistakes' series Julie! You are always spot on. I might want to add another suggestion for the vanity lighting. I personally, have to have it done certain way. No over the mirror wall sconces, they HAVE to be on both sides of the mirror, or if you are dealing with one huge mirror, then have the pendants hanging from the ceiling right in front of the mirror, on either side of the sink(s). This is so much more intimate and flattering when looking at yourself in the mirror.

Love this video. This what has me stuck right now! It started with a glass shower door breaking to wanting to rip down some wall and remove the bathtub, etc. I am STUCK on colors and materials to use. I want to keep it earthy tones like my living room, but you are right, sooo many choices.
@landonedwards75044 жыл бұрын
As a contractor who has previous experience in colors (aluminum and plastics industries), I totally agree that looking at materials in the light of the surroundings is critical to making a good choice. But one thing few people realize is the majority of people cannot accurately discriminate a single color when multiple others are in close proximity. As in, multiple paint samples next to each other on a small wall space. With color perception, the brain "sees" peripheral vision, and that influences judgement. So even when you think your eye is focused on a single color among others, the brain influences perception by combining the others, along with the lighting, and the orientation (horizontal vs. vertical surface and "sheen"). Color industry standards say a color should be evaluated against a uniform background of Munsell N8 Neutral Gray under daylight illuminance (6500 degrees Kelvin). You don't need to get that technical. But you shouldn't bias your decisions with a lot of peripheral vision "distractions" that won't be part of the final product. As to bullnose, people who source their own tile should have their fist question be, "Is bullnose available for this?" Also, no tile contractor is going to have an effective solution for covering the raw edge of tile - short of butting tile molding, wood molding, or metal against it. Sometimes a pencil edge tile can be used in place of bullnose, but it generally looks funky. Finally, color temperature of the lighting you use in the space should be geared to the color palette you choose (i.e, don't use warm light of ~3000K with grays or blues, and vice versa), and definitely use layered lighting to the extent you can. Not simply can lights in the ceiling. LED with dimmers is the only way to go.
@JulieKhuu4 жыл бұрын
So technical! You’re my kind of contractor! 🙌🏻
@janeseymour5093 жыл бұрын
Wow! That’s the kind of detail I like to see! Discerning colors takes practice. Only after months of pouring over BM Fanbooks which I purchased for about $30 each & painting my own sample boards from broken down drawers out of the gutted kitchen was I able to discern undertones & other subtle differences from one color to another. I just learned from this comment that cool lighting is better than warm for blue. Thanks very much. Jane

I really enjoy your videos! About bathroom lighting....doesn't lighting above the mirror create face shadows? I think I read to do the lighting to the side of the mirrors to create the best facial lighting, am I right? Also do you recommend warm or cold lighting? Both depending on the situation (poor natural light)?
@JulieKhuu Жыл бұрын
I go for warm always- 3000K bulb is my favorite. Vertical sconces on the side of the mirror is best for makeup application and lighting the face. If you don’t need that, then any vanity light will do. Sure, top down may cause shadows, but sometimes we want a linear direction because it frames the elevation and mirror better. That’s up to you to make that design decision.

This is a great video, thanks. One small correction is that certain through-body porcelain tiles can be used like stone and have an exposed edge This is handy if you prefer the look of a squared-off edge rather than bullnose or Schluter but don't want the expense of natural stone. The effect can be quite striking if done properly.

There is nothing I can do, other than keeping it very clean, to make it better except get the sledge hammer! They repainted the vanity black and did some sort of finish on the countertop that is black and fading in spots. Gold and white plastic mirrors over the beige, rusty sinks and a medicine cabinet off to the side that looks like the door to a saloon! It's a horror show.

The metal strip at the edge of your tiles is a good idea. The bullnose is still an unsupported ceramic corner and if anything hard bumps it, it will chip. Metal might dent if it's hit hard enough, but it won't chip out.

I have 191" from back shower/tub wall to opposite vanity wall. Would love ideas on how to re-work the tub/shower configuration. Wow your bathroom is huge Carolyn! Honestly love designing bathrooms with a grand spa-like feel! In your case you can configure it however you like prioritizing the shower plus bench, a sizable tub, and nice 60” min vanity. You can even separate the water closet in this case. I would do shower next to tub next to closed WC and vanity facing tub.

I like the idea of the full slab porcelain wall - it's basically one single tile covering the whole wall instead of a whole lot of smaller tiles. But I'd add a row of small tiles, maybe in a decorative contrast pattern, just above the edge of a fitted bathtub. The wall finish sits down over the edge of the bath and when someone wants to take out the bathtub, the bottom row of tiles is going to have to be taken off too - an affordable replacement if it's a row of decorative painted tiles, but rather more expensive if it's the whole wall finish!

Just found your channel and loving it. Must have been meant to be as we are currently doing a master bathroom update (ie, no tear out of floors or tiles at this time) just paint, replacement of builder grade mirrors with standalone mirrors, countertops, vanity lights, faucets and pulls. I have three dilemmas...our tall 12.5ft walls which makes decorating hard, which vanity lights are appropriate to use on mirrors (we are replacing our builder grade mirror with three tall individual mirrors) and second guessing my Greek Key wallpaper choice (wondering if it is the right scale for the space).
@JulieKhuu4 жыл бұрын
For walls that tall, I would go with double wall sconces that flank both sides of the mirror instead of a singular one up top. It will add more dimension to the space

I am a homeowner in Massachusetts and I was inquiring about your services in Massachusetts. I’m in the process of redesigning the master bathroom and redecorating the entire home. I had hired someone from the Atlanta area but a family event interfered with moving this project.

Remodeling a 50 year old bathroom and loved your ideas. Would like to know how to pick flooring based on the tile used in the bathtub area and the countertops. What do you suggest for floors a wood look tile or ceramic tile. Cabinets are white , vanity top is a slab with white and grey, bathtub is ceramic tile in muted neutral tones on porcelain similar color.
@JulieKhuu2 жыл бұрын
I love ceramic tile or natural stone if your budget permits Kathy. Not a huge fan of the wood look porcelain. I feel like it’s been overdone and there are so many incredibly stylish options out there.

This is an excellent video to help avoid mistakes. When it comes to niches, I like the niche centered but lower on the wall, about 3 feet off the ground. That way, the tile at eye level is uniform. I do not want to stare at shampoo bottles at eye level.

We are right in the middle of a bathroom remodel. The bathroom is our master bath that was stuck in 1972 when the home was built. I celebrated Demo day. We actually went shopping with our designer for tile, flooring and cabinets , the only items purchased on line were the bath accessories, towel rack, cabinet handles and such. Can't wait till it's completed, maybe another two weeks.

Curious on the accent tile design. You mentioned what doesn't look good and showed some examples. Do you have examples of well done design? Might help me avoid making some accent tile mistakes as I'm about to start a bathroom reno.
@JulieKhuu4 жыл бұрын
I’m not a fan of accent tiles in bathrooms at all Katie. Rarely do I find that they have any value over beautiful tile work and craftsmanship. I’ve done them on singular occasions when the client REALLY wanted a particular tile for the entire bathroom, but I negotiated to use it for an accent instead. It’s a dated look imo
@jenroberts23823 жыл бұрын
Loved your video!! Struggling with a windowless basement bathroom. Just don’t know how to finish it - inclined towards tile but want something that will brighten it. I was thinking keep it a little raw and show some concrete, but also love the expensive flashy acrylic panels I found. I just don’t want to spend a ton of money but want it to look good. Also, prefer a timeless look so that it doesn’t look dated in 5 years! I welcome any and all ideas. I think I will make a inspiration board, that was great advice bc there are so many options out there!
@JulieKhuu3 жыл бұрын
Keep it light and bright Jen- that means whiter finishes as opposed to darker grays (concrete) or natural wood unless it’s light. If you decide on something darker, layers of light from the ceiling and the walls is how you bring more brightness in
@jenroberts23823 жыл бұрын
@@JulieKhuu Thanks for your response and your timing is fabulous as were were trying to make decisions this weekend. We were between two options one with some color, one more light and bright with a lot of white. We will go in that directions. Thanks!

I want to see your DIY RENOVATION! Please add 2 safety considerations: 1) Placement of and Blocking (in the studs) for grab bars (also useful for towel bars & casual TP holders). 2) How to assure flooring tile meets reliable industrial specifications such as INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR STANDARDIZATION (ISO) which are notably lacking or unreliable among the popular residential tile suppliers. No one wants to see a guest suffer a head injury or hip fracture from your lovely matte finish porcelain tile floor that was deemed by the manufacturer to be appropriate for bathroom floors and even showers! I’m just a homeowner doing a remodel including months of research on my choice of tile! Jane

I just found your video and feel both inspired and intimidated anew! HELP! My bf and I have had to move in to my mother's house as she's not safe to live alone anymore, so we're trying to update the house to make it more sustainable for us. The bathroom needs serious attention, but I've been laid off for months, so we're DIY on a budget! So...very glad that won the poll, as I will now be subscribing! Some of the major issues I'm facing, is, well first off: all of it is 34+yrs old when they bought the house, and its fallen into worse wear since my dad passed over 6y ago. Replacing the tub would be too much, but I **NEED** to get rid of the idk...plastic-like wall surround they put in when I was a child, and has a melted candle hole to add to the 90's gaudiness. If it wasn't for the melted part, I'd have done a short term chic fix of just the Peel and Stick I've seen on some videos, right on top to freshen it up until we save for reno/decide to sell if she needs more care. But as it's not waterproof atm, (luckily it was an upper niche on the back wall with no direct water spray), it seems I won't get off that easily LOL! Any advice to steer me in the right direction on how to easily replace that stuff? Beyond that, I have the exciting part of finally (FINALLLLLYYY 😃) replacing the vanity, it's a floor one attached to two walls, likely the original one from '70's. Is there anything I should be weary of when ripping it out?
@JulieKhuu4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for Margaret! Unfortunately I wouldn’t put in the time or effort to salvage the linoleum surround. I would replace it completely with a new piece. They make updated tub + shower surrounds that you can replace in one whole piece from Home Depot. Very affordable vs. paying for new tile- check it out on their website and hire a local contractor that can swap it out for you. I think this is your best budget fix. Good luck!

Hello, was wondering what would be the best height to set for the wall tiles when one decides to have paint on the top area for a mixed tile/paint project? Thanks

It depends on your design intent, but 42” would clear the sink and backsplash 👍🏻

Not good Feng Shui in a place of waste and negativity Dang. I would advise against it
@debbiesitarz87624 жыл бұрын
All excellent advise. Something I always warn people against is choosing dark tile, especially in the shower. Black, dark grey, dark blue, etc. looks pretty sexy but shows water spots immediately, and soap and shampoo drops stand out like nobody's business. It looks terrible and in order to keep your gorgeous tile looking gorgeous, you will spend every day cleaning it. likewise with choosing dark flooring throughout your home, especially if you have pets. All you will see is the dust and pet fur tumble weeds collecting along the baseboards and in all the corners. As a home owner you need to be honest with yourself in terms of what kind of house keeper you are and how well you look after and maintain your home. You need to consider the types of materials you are choosing in terms of durability and upkeep. Marble for instance stains easily as it is porous and needs to be sealed and treated every 6 - 12 months, especially in kitchens. If you have high traffic areas and kids, you need to choose more durable and resistant finishes and materials, it's not just about how much you like the look of a certain tile, flooring, counter top, etc. Please do your research before you commit to making purchases. Bathroom and kitchen remodels are the most expensive spaces within the home to remodel and you don't want to spend piles of money only to have buyer's remorse within a year or so, of getting your beautiful new bathroom.

Great insight Debbie, thank you for sharing! So true, unless you have a soft water filtering system in the home, water spots on dark tile and fixtures are such a nuisance to clean! I have black faucets in my home and totally learned my lesson!

Hi Julie thank you for uploading this video really enjoyed it and it was very informative. I especially appreciated the point that the contractor is not the designer which is a key point. We are renovating our master bath and plan on going with the porcelain veneer slabs for the shower walls. Was wondering your opinion for the bathroom floor? Are shinny tiles for the bathroom floor functional and in style? Thanks Julie

I would go for matte flooring since the walls are already polished. The contrast will look fab 👍🏻

Interesting content... The lights over a large mirror is very classy. And I had not thought about a mirror ontop of a mirror wall. Great idea. Do you have a video on design wins, instead of fails? Also I lived in Japan for half my life, so I prefer a water closet and no toilet in the bath room. I just think the bathroom should be where we feel clean all the time and having a toilet in there seems unclean. And ideas about that?
