@@JulieKhuu I understand both viewpoints. But, I would also like to point out that you can have luxury décor (lux is how I roll too), but on a smaller scale, so that makes the lux look more attainable. Like I live in a two-bedroom apartment in New York City and I have expensive, traditional taste, so a lot of my décor is fit for a castle or a manor house, but I live in a normal sized apartment- no huge rooms like a castle or manor, but the décor is fit for one! :-D And, PS- nothing is very expensive, it just looks expensive. I'm middle class, not wealthy.

This is such great advice. I would add in terms of artwork, a 'focal' gallery wall of original artwork in varying styles, frames and sizes gives a great 'homely' feel. With furniture, I always believe it needs to be curated and updated over time. Not one piece in my lounge matches. I moved into the house with a second hand 1990s habitat sofa with an intention of moving up to a bespoke Heal's & Co velvet 3 seater. Don't spend money on a stop gap piece but keep your intention on the piece you do want. Also, buy furniture/art/accessories with passion. If you love it when you first saw it, chances are you will love it for 10, 20 Infinate years. lastly, play with scale and height. The can often inform the layout.

This is the first video that I have watched on your channel. I am so hooked! I love your no-nonsense delivery, but your re still so personal. You are delivering facts only, but I feel like you’re having a real conversation with me. I bet you’re a really wonderful person to talk to in person. This video helped me realize my rug is the problem in my living room. It is the wrong shape and, if I’m honest with myself, I’m tired of it. I bought it for a different house, where it looked great, but now I find that it’s too small, not a rectangle as it should be for this space, and it reminds me that I had to move well before I wanted to, and reminds me of the bad circumstances that made me move. So now I know - that rug has got to go! Thank you

I love your comment, about choosing the design that works for you right now, not in the past or in the future. I couldn’t agree more! Over the last several months, I’ve slowly tweaked areas, so that they work for the three of us in the house (two adults and a child) vs us plans entertaining. We generally love have friends over, but with coved, we don’t. So I took the leaf out of the kitchen table and added in some great bar height chairs for us to use (and to keep the balance in the room.) Yes, it makes the flow different. But we aren’t having 15 people in the kitchen area like we were before. We have three people. It’s perfect and cozy and works for us in the now.

Julie, how do you find the middle ground between a piece that you love with what is functional? Like you love that RH cloud couch but you have kids. Can there be a middle ground?
@JulieKhuu4 жыл бұрын
Yes, performance fabrics! Select a fabric that is easy to clean, could have removable cushions to throw in the wash, or one that is optimized with synthetic fibers so you can simply spray and wipe it down. The only reason I don’t have the cloud sofa already has to do with spatial challenges- the scale is totally off for my living room
@merrywalsh28094 жыл бұрын
@@JulieKhuu I wanted the cloud sofa for comfort, but IRL I was afraid it would look too rumpled and I didn’t want to deal with constantly fluffing it up, plus I vowed to myself not to eat or use animal products such as leather and down any longer. Many considerations to purchasing a sofa!
@Lisawhatshersname2 жыл бұрын
I mean, I'd really love to follow every single one of these principles. I really would. We live in a mobile home and two of our teen/young adult children are sleeping in the living room... I suppose you wouldn't consider that a living room or sitting room, but something more along the lines of a den or "spare room" (that would be nice). So yeah, the couch is pushed against the wall, the TV is across the room, and that's how we have to live right now... Shared spaces!! I love these designs and am still looking for ways to incorporate them into our home. Thanks for this series!

You make a valid point, but isn’t the primary function of an American living room, especially for couples or singles, watching TV? Most Americans aren’t humming around the house, waiting on someone to enjoy the living room we can’t because we establish it for the purpose of its primary function, which is television. It’d be nice to hear a designer treat the living room how it’s actually treated - as a hub for entertainment. I can’t remember the last time I voluntarily hung out with people in a room that has no entertainment. It’s non-sensical to the average person. Your points are great, but aboveboard for typical people.
@JulieKhuu4 жыл бұрын
It’s split 50/50. I have clients who wouldn’t dream of putting a TV in the living area. They keep it in the bedroom/ private areas so the living room is used as a gathering space devoid of technology. It’s becoming increasingly popular, especially if you have a family room or loft as a dedicated entertainment hub. But I get you, if you only have one room and you need a TV, the living room would be the place to put it (see my own home for example)
@pm66134 жыл бұрын
You assume we are all TV addicts. They are the biggest eyesore in a 'living' room where we 'socialize', not mutely sit together. TVs work in their own media area, or somewhere where you isolate, like your bedroom.
