-- INFO
The French Revolution (French: Révolution française) was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France from 1789 to 1799 that profoundly affected French and modern history, marking the decline of powerful monarchies and churches and the rise of democracy and nationalism. This anthem was composed in 1792, and is played every 14th of July on Bastille Day, to celebrate the 1789 Revolution. The Bastille was a Parisian prison for political dissidents under the monarchy, and its capture & destruction soon became the symbol of the French Revolution. Three words you will often hear: liberté, égalité, fraternité.
--- LYRICS (with translation)
Allons enfants de la patrie
Arise children of the fatherland
Le jour de gloire est arrivé !
The day of glory has arrived
Contre nous de la tyranie
Against us tyranny's
L'étendard sanglant est levé !
Bloody standard is raised
Entendez-vous dans nos campagnes
Can you hear in the fields
Mugir ces féroces soldats ?
Howling fearsome soldiers?
Ils viennent jusque dans nos bras
They are coming into our midst
Egorger nos fils et nos compagnes
To cut the throats of our sons and consorts
Aux armes citoyens ! Formez vos bataillons !
To arms citizens! Form your battalions!
Marchons, marchons ! Qu'un sang impur
March, march, let impure blood
Abreuve nos sillons
Water our furrows

It's actually not anything bad said here. When we say "impure blood". We talk about our own blood. At this time, there was nobility and the the rest called "tiers état". Nobles were said to have a blue blood, a "pure blood". As the revolution began, the people started to fight for themselves and not some nobles. So now, it would be our own blood, our impure blood spilling for our own interests.

For those wondering why the lyrics are bloody. Its because France in 1789-1799 had the bloodiest revolution in history with people being executed around the clock in every French town that had a Guillotine. This song was written when the monarchist nations were invading the extremely anti-monarchist country, and was a rallying call for French fighters under napoleon.
@Stalysfa
@Stalysfa 6 жыл бұрын
No. It was a rallying song under the first republic. The "Chant du départ" replaced the Marseillaise under napoléon. It's not a blood thirsty anthem, the "impure blood" part talks about the blood of the french people, in contrast to the nobles who had "pure blood", or a "blue blood". You can't treat the whole revolution as one revolution. The period between 1789 and 1792 was not a period of mass execution. It's what I call the "counter-revolution" under Robespierre that started this period of mass execution. This song was sung also during the french monarchy when the King Louis XVI declared war to Austria during the constituional monarchy.

Julien, this was very well done but I have a question for you... You're a French national, aren't you? I've always wondered if French was your first language, as you seem to speak it near flawlessly as far as I can tell ( at least to my American ears). Your normal English speaking voice doesn't seem to have any traces of an accent to me, so... how'd you manage that or were you born in an English-speaking locale? Your English speaking dialect is very neutral and hard for me to place. I suppose it doesn't have anything to do with your music but it's something I've been very curious about since first seeing your videos. Regardless, I really enjoy your work. Thanks.

People that make fun of France for capitulating during WWII obviously don't know their history. Throughout history France has had one of the best(at times the best) military in the world. At the start of WWII France had better tanks than Germany, very good armament, well trained and brave soldiers. It was their leadership that caused the blunder. From America: Vive la France!!🇫🇷

+ELC Driver, You fail to get the picture of what was going on. The bloodthirsty people were the Austrians poised on the border of France in April of 1792, ready to invade and make slaves out of everybody, not the French people, who were called to resist at a time when there were no standing armies and no draft ... yet. The bloodthirsty people were the "despotes sanguinaires," the bloodthirsty despots oppressing the French people, and the henchmen of Bouillé, not to mention "all these Tigers who mercilessly slash the breast of their mother [their own motherland]." In the face of people who not only want to kill and enslave you but who are already oppressing you with no compassion whatsoever, will you sing, "Let's all march hand in hand down the Champs Élysées while strewing flowers to the happy throngs around us?" No, you will sing, "Let blood so vile be spilled till victory's won!" This anthem is not about the French people being bloodthirsty. It's about them standing up to people who want to murder them in cold blood. You have to love your enemies so much that you don't want your enemies to become murderers. And the only way to do that is to defend yourself. If you don't fight back, aren't you an accomplice to your own murder? As such, you are just as guilty before God as if you had murdered yourself, because you helped your murderer to kill you. "Vive la France! Vive La Marseillaise!" See my three-verse piano arrangement with French and metric match English singing translation, "La Marseillaise (The Spirit of Marseille):" id144230.webhosting.optonline.net/gloriasunproductions.com/merchantmanager/product_info.php?products_id=49

***** To be honest, I like them. These lyrics tell the story of a nation throwing off the bonds of monarchy to become the paragon of democracy in Europe. The people took the initiative and created a republic out of one of the world's most powerful states. It's similar to the United States's national anthem in this sense (though we didn't throw off monarchy, just the nation, and we never got somebody as great as Napoleon).
