Im going through something similar to you except Ive also had my radial head replaced as well as the fractured ulnar. One thing I found that really helped with extension of my arm was really stretching my wrist to restore its flexion , its made a huge difference, also pushing my arm against a door frame to straighten it out, I know this sounds nuts and initially its going to really hurt but it absolutely works. I managed to restore pretty much full extension after 12 weeks post surgery, like you I was told I wouldnt get full extension back! Single hand deadlifts with a light kettlebell are also really great. I wish you well with your recovery Juliet! I guess I should caveat all that with "This is not medical advice" lol

I had a similar injury. I had a fracture just above the elbow, dislocated elbow, and compound fractures in my wrist. I had surgery and metalwork went in to help healing. When I got the cast reduced to just the lower part of my arm and the pins removed I also couldn’t straighten my elbow. It was honestly about 6 months before I could straighten it all the way. Never had any physio, just worked on it myself. The other thing is the nerve damage went away in time too. I don’t have full use of the arm, but it’s about 98%. Hopefully that gives you some hope. You’re an athlete, so I know you won’t give up. Doctors don’t always know what they’re talking about.

That is an experience I can also confirm from my side. I had pretty much the same injuries as you described. My ellbow is still quite stiff 6 months after my surgery but it is usable. The key for me was moving my arm around constantly and starting with strength training as soon, as I got the go from my doctors an physios.

I broke my wrist on a sportive in Ottery St Mary going down a large hill and hitting a huge pothole. Once I had recovered to ride again, I changed my bike to Specialized Roubaix with the front suspension to give me that extra comfort my wrist needed. Front suspension in the form of elastomer stems, units like the Specialized Future Shock or Lauf forks totally rock where extra comfort is needed
@CornishColinКүн бұрын
Agreed I put a Lauf Grit fork on my bike and it's really helped my wrists.

After my elbow surgery at 20, it took 4 months of painful physical therapy before I could bend/extend my arm fully. Decades later, I still have to work on it.

I’m kind of in the same situation, I just had a total hip replacement (ware and tare from years of kickboxing). The pain effected everything apart from cycling thankfully, it’s been 6 weeks and I’ve just started back on the spin bike, should be good to go full send in the spring 😂

Recovery from nerve damage is hard to predict. Fifty years ago (age 17), I severed my Achilles and the nerves to my right foot. I still can't move my toes or stand on my right leg without assistance and have reduced sensation. Yet I've managed to do a number of marathons, triathlons and Ironmen. The point is not whether you get back to pre-injury status, but whether you figure out a path forward dealing with a different physical condition. Looks like you're well down that path. Good luck!

Good that you're moving on to the next stage of recovery. By the way, I finally got myself a smart trainer to get through the long winter about a month ago, and chose Rouvy to use with it, partly because of your recommendations in the past. I was skeptical about virtual riding, but I have to say I quite like it. Not as fun as being outside of course, but not a bad substitute on those cold and snowy winter days.

Slow recovery is just part of the joys of getting older! Your body can't just spring back to perfect condition in a few weeks like it does in 20's and 30's. I crashed last year, tore both rotator cuffs and it took 14 months for normal shoulder function to come back. Be patient with yourself 😊 Thanks for the update

Good to see you getting back out there. I just installed a Redshift Stem for the first time on my gravel/winter road bike - and had to check out how to do this. I notice in the video you inverted it to the 6 degree negative but in the last shot where the elastomers were visible they were still on the bottom (I think). Apologies, if you already know or sorted this but I believe you have to move them onto the top when you flip it?

I broke both elbows on March 9th of this year from a gravel bike accident. One elbow needed surgery and I had an excellent occupational therapist that worked with me for 3 1/2 months. She worked on swelling and range of motion for most of that time and progress was slow for the first 2 months but the latter 1 1/2 months things got better. Keep up with your therapy to get as much range of motion back as possible. Surgeons put the pieces back together but therapists get things moving again. On October 12th I was able to complete annual birthday ride of 115 miles which was my farthest ride to date.

The trouble with bending your arm is in your arm probably but you did hit your head and might have flexed your neck too far. The nerve study (EMG) needs to include the area from your neck down. You need a CT or MRI of your neck to make sure you don't have a bulging disc or something else. Just because you have no pain down the arm means nothing. I know this from being a physician and personal experience of crashing myself. Even if they find a problem in the arm itself, there is no law against having another issue at the same time. A good doctor will know this. Sometimes a neck / spine injury will take years to fully present itself.

Hello, Juliet. Have your Doctors discussed transplanting the nerves from your chest to your arm? Twenty years from now, those nerves in your chest are likely to develop shingles. So it’s win-win. I guess that your motorcycle is going to require a steering damper for the time being👍

Maybe your finger problem is damage to the Ulnar Nerve. This could have occurred anywhere from your neck to wrist. The damage might not be at the elbow injury, you might have had a brachial plexus injury which has not been diagnosed. This happened to me and it was over a year before I got a proper diagnosis.
@JulietElliottsChannel16 сағат бұрын
Sorry to hear that. Apparently they could see my ulcer nerve when my elbow was hanging open. No wonder it’s damaged!

It takes time, I was expecting full movement back in my hand after 2/3 months but it took 10 months in reality. Be patient 👍🏻
@user-lx6pk9os2d18 сағат бұрын
If you can't feel your fingers, it's nerve damage. I had exactly the same. Ask your specialist about EMS treatment to accelerate the nerve regrowth.
