Today we’re exploring a West African language - Hausa. Hausa is one of the biggest African languages, but surprisingly it is not very well known outside the continent. It is also an Afroasiatic language, which means that it is related to Arabic, Hebrew, Amharic and Maltese among many others. Hausa language grew thanks to the Trans-Saharan trade in the medieval times, and it continues to be one of the most influential languages in West Africa.

Imagine my shock seeing a video talking about my language. Great research!! Unlike most other stuff on African languages, you stuck to the facts and I appreciate that a lot. And yes, boko is very hard to write, especially with all the intonation missing from Latin scripts. For example My friends type things like “if” as “dace” which when reading you’d assume the stress would be on the “da” e.g “datse (sever/cut)” but it is actually pronounced “da↗️ ce↘️” and has ZERO stress which again is another thing that can’t be easily written with Latin letters. I personally try to be as verbose as possible when typing and add spaces EVERYWHERE so the words don’t get misunderstood. Because at least at that point anyone reading won’t have to worry about stress because the words are not joined. Once again, great video 👍. I’m totally sharing this with my family!!

I am speaking Hausa fluently despite not been one, but because I am living together with them, wonderful people, great culture, hospitable, tasty food, and generally fantastic living environment. I'm surprized no one has started a KZbin channel like this one and Langfocus just on African langauges because there's more than enough material out there. I would love to see anyone do something on Nubian. Egypt used Nubian code talkers in the Yom Kippur war against Israel. Massai, Dinka, Zulu, Ormo would also be cool.

The research work behind this video is just impressive and very professional. What I especially liked is the part where you talk about the plural. Hausa is my mother tongue but I never studied it at school as we study in French in Niger. But I still realized that the plural is very irregular compared to other languages. And it is thanks to you that I have just had a first source which deals with the question of the plural in Hausa. I wish you or someone else could make us another video in detail about Hausa grammar and its richness.

Le travaille de recherche derrière cette vidéo est juste impressionnant et très professionnel. Ce que j'ai aimé c'est surtout la partie où vous parlez du pluriel. Le hausa est ma langue maternelle mais je ne l'ai jamais étudié a l'école étant donné que nous étudions en français au Niger. Mais je me suis quand même rendu compte que le pluriel est très irrégulier comparé à d'autres langues. Et c'est grâce a vous que je viens d'avoir une première source qui traite la question du pluriel en hausa. J'aimerais que, vous ou quelqu'un d'autres, puissent nous faire une autre vidéo en détail sur la grammaire hausa et sa richesse.
