I remember back in the late 90s, channels like History Channel, A&E and PBS used to have some really good ancient rome (and medieval) documentaries back in the days. I think they officially stopped making good quality documentaries at the end of 2006. If you are a history or social studies teacher, these are a gem to show during class or just watch on your own.

I find IT especially annoying when in comparison Caesar was Quite tame, you have Guys Like Octavian WHO learned by being ruthless and rarely pardoned anyone, people tend to forget He got killed by people He spared and also there are Guys Like Marius and sulla who Had Public Hitlist that anyone could kill and rob their property and this escalated in thousands of deaths in rome ,instances where sonst killed their father to get the Hermitage by forced. His achievements were pretty spectacular. You could make an argument that conquering the East wasn't terribly impressive because they'd already been scattered by Pompey, decades before, and you could say that his conquests in Britain and Gaul were less impressive than he made them out to be (quite likely, actually), due to Roman technological and organizational superiority relative to the forces he'd met, but the fact of the matter is he still successfully defeated one of the most accomplished and celebrated generals in Roman history, Pompey, and defeated several successive Roman armies afterward, as well. Pompey was in a better position and he was better supplied, and Caesar still won, further establishing the impressive nature of his victories. That's only to speak of his military successes, as well. His political successes were arguably as impressive.

I cheated death, at the hands of L C Sulla..."Phew!!!" Next, 'I came, I saw, I conquered' ;all I beheld...Eventually, my Karma bus arrived for me, and I was stabbed to death in my home town office, at the hands of fellow Romans! Ugh! typical!!!" ....Julius Gaius Caesar; Great General officer. Imperator. Terrible war criminal. This is a brilliant documentary, about a very remarkable man, who was an exceptionally gifted leader of fighting men, in his own right, I think. Nice one Sir Tony, very well presented. Thank you so much Timeline.

That steak is obviously a metaphor for Caesars guts as the knives went in.

Tiberius, Caligula, Maximinus Thrax, Commodus, Nero, Elagabalus, all the Roman emperors began with Julius Ceasar.

Excellent series & brilliantly presented by ⭐️ Mr. Robinson (as usual). Even though I consider myself a history nerd, I realized how little I know about this era & Caesar except 'et tu Brute' lol. 🙄 (I kind of know more about the Medici. Yes, I know, TOTALLY different era) I also enjoy the true history vs. legend/Hollywood version. ie: Spartacus wasn't really what the movies make him out to be. *I'm really enjoying these episodes. I'll be looking for more to educate myself on this line of rulers* ~Help: > *If anyone has any other recommendations, it would be much appreciated!!* < 😊 (I watched Mary Beard on Caligula, so far) I prefer UK historians/presenters. Greetings from Canada 🇨🇦

Luna 333 I'd recommend the novels by Robert Harris on Cicero ... very factual. Harris really understands Julius Caesar as a ruthless reckless animal. Harris shows his character in a way that you don't see in the Hollywood films that glorify his wars, and ignore what he was doing: invading lands, killing people & stealing their possessions.

31:30 "in 60 A.D. there were twelve million Gauls," - T.R. 60 A.D. or B.C.? Wouldn't that make Caesar 160 years old if he had lived in 60 A.D.?

Today I celebrate Julius Ceasars life I don't understand why the ides of March isn't a national holiday in America. If it wasn't for him there would be no calendar there would be no July 4th. Celebrate this awesome man's life
