They booed Dr. J but when he spoke to the fans, they appreciated, he won them over. Class.

And that, IMO, is what made him the best in my opinion. Nobody in those days could do what he was doing. But he was always so humble and classy, just a tremendous role model during my teenage years. Maybe not the greatest scorer or greatest shooter, but overall package,on and off the court, I'll take Dr. J, every single time.

Julius is the best rebounding,blocking,steals, volume scorer megastar of all times and the best ever on the open court bar none..Mj has an overall edge on him due to his post game perfection..Dr J in his prime though was an unseen sensation to watch while Mike although more fierce was less free flowing and came second..since these two there is no one else with that type of magic

I grew up watching Dr. J and loved him as a kid, but he isn't anywhere near as good as LeBron James. Dr. J as good as he was could not go to his left. LeBron on the other hand is left handed but shoots mostly with his right and can drive with either hand and shoot with either hand, and he actually has a higher vertical than Dr. J.

Perfect acceptance speech; I think that Doc's thoughtful charisma stunned, and shamed the booing fans. He first acknowledged them, gracefully, totally disarming them, then expressed a little vulnerability in reminding them that for all of his exploits that kept the ABA afloat as a saleable commodity, he had lost, as well; and then, let them know that *he was who he was;* he was totally their "daddy" with that speech. Bravo.

It was a magical time in the NBA. Its hard to describe to those too young to remember just how much Dr. J electrified the entire NBA when he came in. Every one had heard the stories but most had not seen him in person. We had never seen anything like him. MJ and everyone else who came after were imitators. Doc invented a new game, and he did it with consummate class.

@chrisgabler9507
@chrisgabler9507 7 жыл бұрын
I think Jordan and Thompson had a quicker 1st step facing the basket, but, from this video, the Doc had incredible speed to run down court to steal the ball, block shots. Erving was bigger and stronger, and posting up on them I believe he would have the advantage. His first five years in the ABA, and the first four years in the NBA Erving was at the peak of his physical athleticism.

It's called - being on the wrong side of history, those who booed The Doctor - being MVP also involved helping to revive the sport. Which Dr J did until the arrival of Bird and Magic. Also back then Julius Irving & Co. continually knocked Milwaukee out of the playoffs , perhaps as a backhand to the no-class idiots who booed him, I'd like to think so.

That's right, Doc's last game was in Milwaukee at the Mecca, I was there and Milwaukee (the Bucks) played "Philadelphia Freedom" by Elton John after the game as Milwaukee finally got past the 6ers.. I was a Philadelphia Fan living in Wisconsin. The Doctor was my favorate, a very exciting player. Nice to see Bob Linear in the Allstar game playing well. I did not know Detroit was West Coast in 77. I really started watching in 79 when I became a Jack Sikma fan, Down Town Freddie Brown, what Magic did in 80 was Amazing as a Rookie. Spanked my 6ers. Doc and Magic Had Some Good battles.

No,...the 3 point shot kept the game interesting. Without the 3 point shot the team with the big lead had the game won....you could turn the tv off early (and that led to some boring games). One other thing....the 3 pt. shot keep teams from collapsing in the paint on defense; which could also lead to some pretty boring games. But the main advantage of having the 3 point shot was that teams were never out of a game.

His point guard Maurice Cheeks is in the Hall of Fame. When Julius came to Philadelphia in 1976, he was told by Pat Williams to reduce his offensive dominance which included around 6 less shots a game. Go to 1977 finals and watch Doc play more aggressively on the offensive side of the ball. It's the closest u will see what Doc was in the ABA.

As teams became more refined and caught up to the Doctor, folks forget how teams would dbbl and triple team the Doctor in the early 80's , until Andrew came along, you stop Doc., you stop the sixers. When Toney and Moses came along, teams had to restructure the way they played Philly which they did in 1984 after Doc's NBA Ring with his Teammates.

I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who believes this: The 76ers was up 2 games to 0 on the Trailblazers. In the 1976/1977 NBA championship series. The NBA never gave the ABA its proper respect. Calling it playground basketball. You couldn't have this guy (Julius Erving) fresh from the ABA winning a NBA championship in his very first year in the NBA. So the 76ers had to lose that championship. The momentum the Philadelphia 76ers had in those first two games was probably going to be a sweeped resulting in this ABA player become the face of the NBA. How embarrassing for the NBA that called the ABA street ball players. I watched all 6 games, it was like someone simply turned (Rigged) the switch off. For you Trailblazers fans, it's just my most humble opinion. Just ask the 1969 Baltimore Colts and Bubba Smith. In this case the NFL won the first two SuperBowls so the NFL needed the AFL (Eventually the AFC) to look legit. Why do you think Joe Namath guaranteed a Jets victory?

Good upload, Doc was great on this one with some tremendous highlights... But Paul Westphal deserved MVP, to be honest. I've uploaded this game's highlights before, Westphal was great on both ends, very clutch and his team (the West) actually won.

Nah. Also, Westphal was not about to reinvigorate the NBA in 1977 when it was really needed.

At 3:04 ..assuming the fella on the right ( grey hair ) is an assistant...he's not Tex Winter, is he? The fella who created the ' Triangle offense ' later on?

You've got me digging on that one. My first instinct was to say that guy looks too heavy to be 1970's Tex. Also, I didn't know anything about him pre-Bulls but Wiki says he was coaching Northwestern from 1974 to 1978 then Long Beach State from 1979 to 1983. I see the resemblance though. His page for reference: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tex_Winter

Thanks for checking. Appreciate that. But i do believe you are right. He does look a bit too heavy to be the Tex of the 70's.lol. Thanks again..Cheers
