He had such an incredible all around game. In 1976 , he put up a five by five game in the ABA that included 31 points, 19 rebounds, 5 blocks, 5 steals, and 5 assists... Then did it in the NBA with 28 points, 7 rebounds, 10 assists, 5 steals and 5 blocks. He was known for his dunks, obviously---but he did so much more.

I was fortunate enough to see Dr.J play at the Nassau Coliseum when he was a member of the New York Nets of the ABA. He was great then, and the Nets were loaded with talent. The ABA had a lot of stars and was really fun to watch. Even with all the great players in pro basketball, to me the Doctor was the best.

Read somewhere how Pistol Pete averaged like 14-15 assists a game in those pre-season games he played with Dr J. David Thompson saw them play on one of those games and said he never saw a more amazing combo in- sync anywhere on the court together. Given that no one on the Hawks could play Pete's free-wheeling ball handling and passing style at the relentless fast break court tempo he ran and the incredible highlights that remain from the two NBA all star games Pete and Julius played together, it was a loss to the beauty of the game. As to teaming up with Oscar and Kareem, it would have been the dynasty of the 70's for sure on that big man era that only then began to change thanks to the Doctor and the Pistol.

They are in OKC. So dumb when you just keep creating the same teams with the same names in the same locations. Then I suppose they take over the history of the old team thats now in OKC and have all the guys like Shawn Kemp and Gary Paytons numbers to retire or whatever. Like the hornets to new orleans and the bobcats coming out and then changing their name to the Hornets? Minnesota lost the Lakers and the North Stars and are the hockey capital of the country but had a lying greedy owner. We've had to build brand new state of the art baseball, hockey, and pro and college football stadiums with public funding and they are going to make us pay for a new NBA stadium shortly. Come up with an original name. Browns to Baltimore and new Browns. So who did the hall of famers play for? Jim Brown played for the Ravens franchise that was at the time located in Cleveland. You cant transfer histories wtf...

Our GM went to our owner in '76 and said, *"We've got a chance to get Dr. J from the ABA, but it's gonna be expensive."* Our owner asked, *"Who's Dr. J?"* The GM replied, *"Well, sir, he is like the Babe Ruth of basketball."* To which our owner said, *"Babe Ruth??? I have watched basketball for many years but just recently recognized (or perhaps remembered) that Dr. J's famous play against the Lakers where he took off from one side of the basket nearly going out of bounds before twisting to put the ball in from the other side, was done solely with a single hand off the dribble. The other arm was fending off a Laker and never came in contact with the ball. Amazing.

He was already under contract with the Squires in ABA when Atlanta signed him to NBA contract so why was he in the NBA draft? Who let him in the draft to have Milwaukee waste a draft pick on a player already belonging to another team? How could anyone think Milwaukee would have right to him when he already signed with the Hawks? Why was he in the draft? Who made decision to let him be in the draft? The NBA league office didn't know he already signed with the Hawks, skipping the draft because he was already a professional player? How did the league office not know this? Dirty dealings.

I was a kid then and didn't know any of this stuff. Great video and wonderful explanation. I first saw Dr Jay play when he was a Virginia Squier playing against the Nets. An arena full of people's jaws dropped when he launched a dunk from the foul line. I do remember Rick Barry working as a TV sportscaster for the ABC nightly local news in New York when the Golden State Warriors got an injunction against him stopping him from playing on the Nets. Then when the Nets got Dr J I thought what if the Warriors lost their case for the injunction and Barry was free to continue playing for the Nets. Emagine Rick Barry and Julius Erving on the same team. I'd also love for you to do a video about the Rick Barry story, another ABA NBA tussle.

@@MrPiraka123 Pistol was a long range bomber who loved the fast break and would leave the Doc more space to operate from within 15 feet. That was Docs preferred range. So Maravich is likely the better fit. However, it is damn near impossible to argue against the two premier players of the decade teaming up in their early 20s. Its too much talent to bet against. Long term is also tough to guess. Oscar was up there in age and likely doesn't play more than 3 years and Maravich was known for health issues. Personally, seeing Maravich and Julius on the fast break would've been Showtime before Showtime and the more exciting duo. Those alley oops would've been insane.

Thank you for this video. Dr. J may be the greatest player to never get mentioned in the GOAT conversation. I had no idea that he could have played with Oscar, Kareem and Pistol Pete. He got robbed when they lost to Portland in the finals in 77. Some people think that it was something fishy about that series. Dr. J is considered Jordan before Jordan. The NBA did not want him to dominate that league like he did the ABA, but then let Jordan dominate it years later.

I totally agree that the Doc is mysteriously underrated today. I guess that for most people, history begins in 1980. But - I'm sorry if you have sour grapes about that '77 Finals series. That was a great Sixers team, but they ran into Bill Walton when he was healthy enough to play up to his peak, which was arguably as good as any center. I was there and saw it all. The Blazers were a well oiled machine playing playing Jack Ramsay's system to a T. The following year they dominated the league, going 50-10 when Walton went down, a sad end to a great run.

I was alive, but just a kid. The ABA was pretty mysterious back then. They had little to no television coverage. CBS would show a random game on their "Sports Spectacular" show every now and then. ABC had the NBA during that time and had "The game of the week". The NBA/ABA all star game was usually televised by a syndicated network like TVS. I would read about the ABA in Sports Illustrated, but saw very little action. What action I did see was pretty wild with the 3 point shot and all the dunks. Larry Kenon "Special K". Fun times!

Dr J is highly underrated, and that situation did not help at all. Even without joining the Bucks or the Hawks, Dr has 3 rings, 2 in the ABA with the Nets, 1 ring with the Sixers, and 3 NBA final appearances in which he lost. He has 3 ABA regular season MVPs and 1 regular season NBA MVP (the only player to have won mvps in both the ABA and the NBA). He has 2 ABA finals mvps. He has 2 ABA scoring titles. In the ABA all time team, he was voted first with 46 votes, and the next guy had 2 votes. Almost unanimously, he was voted the best player ever in the ABA. --- For me, the list of all time greats goes like this: 1. Michael Jordan. 2. Larry Bird. 3. Magic Johnson. 4. I saw the Doctor play back when he was a Net and though the NBA got a great all-time HOF player to be sure, he was not the same explosive leaper with the 76ers he was with the Nets, having lost a bit of the breathtaking spring he had then. Same is true for Maravich after he went to the Jazz where he still didn't have many teammates who could convert those eye-opening passes. Shame Pete didn't finish his career out with Philly as he originally intended bc even if beyond his prime due to that busted knee, it would've been fun to see them on the same time before he prematurely retired. Yes and no. First, Arnold negotiated a great deal for Erving with the Squires. It was NOT "below market." No one even knew who Erving was at the time, and the ABA didn't have to compete with the NBA to get him. Second, no one "kept" him out of the NBA. He was never IN the NBA. He signed a contract with the Hawks that was illegal. That's why the Squires sued (and won). Thus, the Hawks contract was null and void from the very beginning. Third, the Bucks didn't get "screwed." They took a risk. By the time they drafted Erving, Julius was clearly the best player in the ABA. Yet, he only went 12th? Why? Because it was a huge risk to draft a guy already under a multi-year contract. Also, if the team couldn't sign him before the next year's draft, their rights would have expired and Erving would go back into the draft pool. What the Bucks should have done is made a deal with Virginia for Erving. The league would have voided the Hawks' contract with Erving (like they did) and the Bucks would have gotten their man. The ABA had always struggled. The league (not just the Squires) would have made the deal to move Erving. It was the league who orchestrated Doc's move to the Nets to better showcase him and build the league's brand. They hoped having Erving in New York (his hometown) would bolster their (failed) efforts to land a TV contract. In short, Atlanta was wrong, the Bucks failed, Erving got a bonus and a better deal (along with a trade to the Nets, eventually) and the Squires (eventually) had to surrender the two best players ever to lace 'em up in the ABA: Erving and George Gervin. (Which is why the Squires didn't enter the league with the merger; they folded right before the merger was announced.)

@@jab1289 Erving was under contract with the Squires, and the NBA had a practice of not dealing with ABA teams about anything. (The two leagues were in a bidding war.) No NBA teams were trading with ABA teams. Doc was simply off the table. Another question is why didn't the Celtics draft him in 1971? The NBA had just lost the Spencer Haywood case and underclassmen (Julius was a junior at UMass) could apply for the draft for financial "hardship." But teams didn't select any underclassmen besides Haywood in the 1971 draft. The league held a supplemental "hardship" draft later that year (September), but Erving had already signed with the Squires. Note that taking Erving in 1972 would have been fruitless. He never did play for the Bucks. Erving had signed with the Hawks (while still under contract with the Squires). The commissioner ruled that he belonged to the Bucks, but a court ruled he had to fulfill his contract with the Squires. Two years later the Celtics were NBA champions, so they did okay.

This is so sad, because I can remember Kareem Abdul Jabbar needed some help with Oscar Robertson being on the downside of his career, it would have helped both players. Plus nobody would have beaten them as they could have ran off and won at the very least 3 consecutive titles.

The Bucks got screwed... just like you said. In the 1980s, they couldn't get by Dr. J. and the 76ers, then they couldn't get by Larry Bird and the Celtics. But the Bucks remained competitive and those teams never gave up.

Bucks didn't get screwed, they screwed themselves drafting a player who was already signed to a pro baskketball team. That should of automatically made Doc ineligible to be drafted. If anything Doc should of been granted the right to sign with Atlanta as his contract with the Squires should of been voided for conflict of interest by his lawyer who worked for Virginia.

Erving, while an intriguing addition to Jabbar and Robertson, was never a serious possibility. Then Bucks GM Wayne Embry invented a 'personal relationship' with Irving that he thought could woo him to the Bucks. But, according to Irving, he didn't even know Embry. It was a wasted pick and further proof how utterly incompetent Embry was as a GM.

ABA trying to stay alive while the NBA played hard ball. There were a few events that caused the merger. This was one of them. The NBA realized they were losing the battle of players and contracts were costing them millions of dollars all of the sudden. It was when sports became entertainment and not sport. It also started the escalation of ridiculous player salaries.

Spencer Haywood and Dr J are 2 out of 6 college players that averaged 20 and 20 both doing it as freshman and sophomores, the other 4 were centers..Dr J had 26 p and 20 reb...they also hold the best rookie seasons ever Dr J with 27 15.7 and 4 and Spencer Haywood with 30 13 and 2.3..MJ had 28 6.5 and 6 and is the discussion although the rebounds are tilting the result towards Julius or Haywood Spencer Haywood would have been a Goat case for sure without the Drugs, still he averaged 20 and 10 so a 25 and 12 could have been his outcome if level headed!

Bucks definitely got screwed they would have won at least one chip with the doctor to go along with the one the got in 1971 in as far as Kareem he definitely would have still left he and it had nothing to do with them winning or losing he never was a fan of the brutal Milwaukee Wisconsin winters in wanted to play in a warmer climate not even the great Doctor J was changing that.
