Julley Ladakh! - Stakna Monastery | aritragraphy

Stakna Monastery or Stakna Gompa of Ladakh is situated on the right bank of the Indus River, at a distance of approximately 25 km from the town of Leh. The name, 'Stakna' means tiger's nose and the monsatery is also known as “Tiger’s Nose Monastery”. It was so named because it was built on a hill, which is shaped like a tiger's nose. The Monastery owes its inception to Chosje Jamyang Palkar, the great scholar saint of Bhutan. It formed a part of the many religious estates offered by the Dharmaraja Jamyang Namgial to the saint, around 1580 AD.
Serving as the residence of approximately 30 monks, the central image inside the monastery is of the sacred Arya Avalokitesvara from Kamrup (Assam).
The big assembly hall or Dukhang of the monastery features a wonderful painting of Tsephakmad, Sakyamuni, Amchi and a chorten of a height of 7 feet towards the extreme right side of the courtyard. It also features statues of Sakyamuni (Past Buddha), the Present Buddha and Maitreya (Future Buddha). And, the throne of the head lama of Stakna lies on the left side of the Dukhang.
Beautiful views of the Indus valley and Indus river can be seen from the roof of the Monastery. Snow capped peaks and ridges of Zanskar range in the south and uncovered slopes of Ladakh range in the north can also be viewed.
Sadly, when we visited the monastery in September 2017, the Dukhang was closed for renovation works.
