Great discussion! I don't know why folks are so quick to ditch their carburetors. Save your money and spend some time learning how to tune your carburetor! :)

I have to say, probably one of the best carb tuning videos I've seen. All advice, very PRACTICAL and clear with real world illustrations. You, in a few minutes have cleared up so much of what I have read on the subject. Your video on engine vacuum, ported vs manifold, has already given me the information needed to get my vehicle running closer to how it should be. Idle is smoother and throttle response has increased. Thanks!

Good advice. I remember playing with main jets on my holley 1850s and 3310s back in the day. If I knew then what I know now! Those "cheap" carbs are IMPOSSIBLE to tune correctly. They'll run OK, but they are infamous for poor gas mileage. I hope Holley throws you a bone for a new efi system, because I think you just sold a heckuvalota kits for Holley with this video LOL.

Great video, this is one of the best explanations I’ve ever run across on the Holley carbureted fuel system and drive ability. Really dig the “big dummy” note you added. I instantly thought of Fred Sanford saying that, followed by “stick your face in dough and make idiot cookies” probably not where your mind went but it was the era I grew up in. Again great video and glad to see ya back on here. 👍

Your so right about the carb not into the main jets just cruising. The Six Packs use the center 2 barrel carb to cruise around town. The outboard carbs never do anything until the pedal is past where your normal driving pedal stops. I like to use a tach to adjust the idle air screws. 1 1/2 turns out after seating the idle air screws. Then set the engine idle screw down to the lowest idle you can maintain. Then I start moving the idle air screw and watching the tach. When you get the best idle on the tach with the first idle air screw then do the second idle screw the same. Then adjust the engine idle screw to where the engine is happy depending on your cam. Mopars are usually set stock at 750 rpms with an automatic trans

I always felt like a carburetor gives you instant throttle response compared to fuel injection. Then you add drive by wire and something is lost. Feel more connected to a car with carburetor. My $.02

I believe it. I had a 1960 Pontiac with a big 389 and it would do 17-ish without me putting any real effort into saving gas. I think they won the Mobilgas Economy run that year with the low-compression (8.0:1) 389 at like 21-22. (Chrysler won the next year with a 361-powered Newport). Carbs are just a specific and kind of lost art. Even when I went to school for auto tech they spent like a day on them - and the year I was there they got rid of all their carbs. Which was nice, because I was given a '71 Pontiac Rochester I sold a few years later for a nice chunk of change, but that's another story.

Vacuum advance does make a huge difference. Believe it or not, I fixed an overheating issue on my big block truck just by switching the vacuum advance from a ported source to a manifold source and adjusting it for maximum advance. Better gas mileage too. The gas mileage on my Charger almost doubled when I hooked up the vacuum advance. I also noticed that without the vacuum advance I had to keep my foot in the throttle like halfway, almost getting into the secondaries, just to maintain 65-70 on the interstate. With the vacuum advance hooked back up, I could cruise at 65-70 with the throttle just barely cracked open.

Awesome Chris thanks 👍🏻 for I want to build V8 best one day again, I used to have a V8 Holden wagon Australian car but I put the 2 barrel on it it was cheap to run then and so was gas lol , I do want a cruiser again will do a small block 283 chev I've already got the block and will get aluminum heads and inlet for a 2 barrel, block hugger headers and see if I can get tubo 700 or something with over drive and just a 8 inch diff with gear's for long distance, hopefully before they want to get rid of petrol car's, they can run on alternative fuels with sero pollution but the petrol companies and governments stop it from happening and covered it up 🙁😡 anyway looking forward to your other video's when you can post them 😀👍🏻

Not sure but I think the 340 and possibility the 360 used a fatter wider cast around the motor mount casting the strengthen up the block from flexing cylinder bore. Maybe try a 318 mount instead. Hope this helps you out.

Sadly soon all combustion cars and trucks including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Car washs will be forbidden too because they are climate killers, now they want to slow down all the gas station pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime.!!! (BABVVEN & TEBBVEN & BEFVO laws)!!!!!!

Those are race carbs, though what you say is 100% right. Fool injection is for fools!! Factory is obviously ok but as soon as you start 'tuning' it it goes to shit. And all the aftermarket is crap. Even the high end ones to some degree I have a 400 cube Galaxy mildly modded with a Edelbrock Performer and a 670 street Avenger where you cannot play with the mixture on low speed,, the metering block is fixed. But at 75mph on the open toad it gets 20mpg and if you use the secondaries it is bum down and gone!! I use a streetfire ign box with a decent coil and it starts and idles like an efi engine. When I bought it 21 years ago it had a 780 vacc Holley from a Falcon GT with a modded factory intake. It went quite hard but was a bit 'dohey' down low. Carb was too big. Though top end performnce was excellent,, but I seldom ever use top end anyway. Most Holley and derivative carbs are fairly good out the box. Though the more efficient the breathing the richer they will be. With very good race heads and intakes you often go down 4 main jet numbers, even more.

Injection is far better than carburettor, Injection saves you fuel, Sounds like you had a cheap low quality injection setup, which isn't good The fuel injection ECUs now are amazing, the sensors and data logging is unreal compared to 10-20 years ago Plus injection you don't need to keep adjusting like carbs etc Each to their own 😁
