July 4th, 1776 was the day 13 British colonies declared their independence from Great Britain and formed a new nation. Learn about the history of the US from an American and a Brit. (Do you think they'll agree?) They'll also show you how they celebrate July 4th today.
You'll hear why, in their opinions, they think:
- Americans wanted 'a divorce' from Great Britain
- the founding fathers were treasonous/brave/far-sighted
- taxation without representation was the core issue (or not)
Vicki and Jay will also describe how they celebrate in Philadelphia today with things like a parade, a street party and fireworks.
And along the way they'll share some of their favourite (and easy) traditional recipes for a great July 4th party.

Oh, the video clips of the festivities on Benjamin Franklin Parkway brought back so many wonderful memories! I used to live just on the other side of the Delaware River in NJ (Cherry Hill Township) and would often go to the Pkwy on Independence Day! So much fun! 🎉Currently stuck in Florida but I can't wait to be able to visit home one day! I've got a lot fun catching up to do! ☺️ Happy 4th! 🎊🎉

Hi Swed. Great to hear from you. Here's the difference between historic and historical. While both are adjectives, they have very different meanings. If we had produced an historic video, it would have been important in history; likely to be thought of as important at some time in the future. But this video is historical - it explains history or is connected with events in the past. So while some future historian may look back on our videos and say this was so good and so important it is historic, the fact that it describes history makes it historical. :-) I hope that's useful information.

@@SimpleEnglishVideos I will! Be safe you too! God bless you!🙏 One more thing Vicki and Jay, I don't know if you've ever made a video about that, but there's a topic in English I've ever found a little tricky, since I started studying the language: the order of the adjectives. For example, when you want to describe something and you put a lot of adjectives one next to each other in a sentence, what's exactly the order I should put them? It'll be awesome and very worthwhile for me and a lot of your youtube viewers if you make a video about that. Thank you so much! 😘

Amazing video, thank you. In Russia we have the 12th of June, it's "Day of Russia", when our country had become separated from the Soviet Union. But it's not commonly celebrated. But we have another day with parades and fireworks, it's the 9th of May - Victory Day, when the Soviet Union won the Great Patriotic Ear in 1945. We have a parade of millions of people going with pictures of their family members who died in a war. And it all happened online this year
@SimpleEnglishVideos

Yes, those of us who are concerned about COVID-19 are celebrating on line too. But unfortunately there are too many people ignoring the warnings and COVID-19 is spreading fast in America.

Hi Vicki and Jay 🙋🏼‍♀️ Great as usual , thanks so much What’s the difference between vendor and seller ? 🤔
@SimpleEnglishVideos
@SimpleEnglishVideos 4 жыл бұрын
They are very similar. Often, when we are speaking conversationally and we refer to a vendor, we are talking about someone who sells things on the street - a food vendor for example would be someone with a cart selling food outside. A seller is anyone who has something to sell, indoors, outdoors, on the stock exchange etc. However, in business, the term vendor is used to describe anyone your business buys products or services from. I hope that clear things up for you Emy.

We are never too old to learn or too young to teach. Good teaching is not about having the right certification or knowing how to answer every question. It is about providing a space and structure and encouragement to help others learn because leaning alone is tough… It is about loving your subject and sharing it with others to help them pursue their own passion!!!️ I have a frustrating experience. Not knowing where to begin or hitting a plateau can feel demoralizing and make it hard to hit the books and study like you know you should…Having friends from other cultures makes me more creative. In fresh ways about space and how people create their own world and environment. It is best way to connect between creative thinking and cross-cultural relationships!

I would like to know your answer. of all English speaking countries, which one has the most difficult accent or English for you to understand even though you are also native speakers of the English language?
@SimpleEnglishVideos
@SimpleEnglishVideos 4 жыл бұрын
Great question, MAICON ALEXANDRE. This is Jay writing back to you. For me, the most difficult accent is from the north of England. It's called the "Geordie" accent. Vicki says the accent heard in Glasgow, Scotland (called a Glaswegian accent) is the most difficult for her. KZbin has good examples of both. Thanks for writing to us and thanks for watching our video.

@SimpleEnglishVideos

Hi Marco. Great question! Both of these sentences are correct. One of them is the past tense and one is the present perfect so it's a matter of tense. For info on when we use the past and present perfect, see this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZCol3ygq9Z2pac.

We're glad we could contribute to your understanding of history, TheKaserriech, but I don't think the American Revolution is quite the equivalent of the Ottoman defeat of Contantinople in 1453. But there are some similarities. Following that victory, the Ottomans were able to advance into Eastern Europe. Following the American victory in the revolutionary war, the newly formed United States began a westward expansion that largely occupied and then annexed the homeland of millions of native Americans. This is Jay writing back to you. Thanks for watching our videos.

the thing I'm always noticing when I'm reading it listening about the British American war no matter what the sources are is the fact that both sides were acting immature like 2 little kids that cannot go well with eachother actually when I think about it British were always like that
@SimpleEnglishVideos

Hi Димитър Дзимбов . I think that might be an oversimplification of British historical behavior, however, we certainly agree that immaturity and lack of adult reasoning can lead to war. Be well and thanks for writing to us.
