Birding northern Maine without DYING.

Birding the North Maine Woods can be awesome in winter, if you can survive it. Find hundreds of pine grosbeaks, evening grosbeaks, pine siskins, common redpolls, purple finches, white-winged crossbills, and red crossbills. Discover black-backed woodpeckers, boreal chickadees, Canada jays, and spruce grouse. But beware. Mother Nature may try to kill you.

I've been to Clayton Lake in September and it was beautiful but a bit chilly. Where I live in mid-coast Maine there seem to be an excess of house finches this winter. I always enjoy your birding videos from up north.

beautiful (except for the logging truck passing by you so fast) and educational. I wonder if the logging company maintains the roads and I wonder how you are able to drive on that without chains and I wonder if the Lynx dine much on the songbirds..... so interesting

The good news is, when you're walking, you can hear the trucks coming from over a mile away. The roads are maintained for the trucks, and the traction is usually good. I suspect a lynx would take a grouse, if possible, but small songbirds probably aren't worth the effort. Primarily, they dine on snowshoe hares. Wherever you find lots of hare tracks, you might find a lynx.

Love your video's. Noticed that You will be a guide at the Acadia Birding Festival. Do you know which trips you will lead?

Yes, I'm guiding. My trip list hasn't been finalized yet, but I expect to take a van load up the coast for spruce grouse and a few other birds that aren't easily found near festival headquarters. I expect to do a "birding by ear" presentation. And I believe I will be on the boat trip.

@@timwalker1955 I think the schedule is nearly finalized, I am leading the Reynold's Brook Road trip on Saturday morning, co-leading the Head Harbor Boat trip in the afternoon, and Campobello's Eagle Hill Bog trip Sunday morning. Plus I'm sure to tag along on some other trips just to help out.
