Hi everyone! I'm Aja Dang and the July budget is here. Basically same old, same old. Thankfully I've been really busy over the past month so as long as I get paid on time by those I work with, we won't have a problem. Life of a freelancer.

That's so frustrating Aja-- glad you called out the company because that's not ok (maybe call out the agency too?) Us freelancers and content creators need to talk about this stuff more so no one else has to deal with it. I've been very lucky that I've not dealt with this much. Maybe this is something you already do..? but I only do partnerships with brands who will put down 50% upfront, and I don't do any work before that lands in my bank account. I find that brands/agencies who are able and willing to do that will usually never have a problem with sending the final payment on time. Sorry if this is something you already do :) I'm also lucky that here in the UK there are strict laws against companies who are late on invoices, and after 30 days late payment, the freelancer can start to add a percentage more per day that it's not paid.

the late payments and chasing down money has literally made us so stressed the last year. We've had a "buffer," but it's like we are always playing catch up because of late payments. Not to mention the time it takes to chase down payments. Serious downside of what we do. It's helpful to know that I'm not the only one, but it's also so f*ed up because we are expected to turn in things on time etc. I've been wanting to talk about this, but also not sure how. SO THANK YOU FOR SPEAKING OUT!

I used to work at an ad agency, and we would work with production companies all the time who handled the talent. I’ve seen people file against the ad agency when the production company didn’t pay. Seeing someone else experience setbacks and frustrations while trying to manage a budget keeps me from saying "screw it," when things get tough. Just as actors have a union. Influencers should form a union-the only way workers have ever gained economic security, quality benefits, and control of their work conditions is by unionizing. I used to work for a nurses union and I’m now a pre-nursing student. Once I graduate I’m going to try to get a job at a union facility the quality of work life is phenomenal.
@giannachacon1846
@giannachacon1846 5 жыл бұрын
On that note, companies are increasingly hiring “independent contractors” or any another “non-employee” category to avoid having to pay workers properly or give them benefits. Since, most labor law and worker protections are centered around “employee and employer” relationships. However, labor law is limited and unions have historically worked outside the legal system, which is a good thing. The strength of a union is dependent on the unity of the workers and the workers knowing that the company’s profits wouldn’t exist without their work.
@giannachacon1846
@giannachacon1846 5 жыл бұрын
And also yes to #Medicare4All! National Nurses United is the nurses union that has brought this issue to the forefront. Most developed nations have universal healthcare and the U.S. despite being one of the wealthiest countries in the world does not. In the US medical debt is one the top financial burdens people face in this country. By tying healthcare insurance to employment it creates an uneven power dynamic between employee and employer. And prevents people for pursuing other things in their life like school or starting business that they would do instead if they didn’t have to worry about paying for healthcare.

Dude, I'm living out of the states at the moment and it makes it more and more clear how fucking bullshit the health insurance system in the US is...like I used to be like yeah yeah it sucks and take it for granted that I don't get anything out of it or have to spend thousands or hundreds on a single procedure or useless doctor's visit. I'll just pay the monthly thing and avoid using it. But here. You pay a little more than 100 dollars a month. For as many GP visits as you need. For freaking mental therapy. The deductible is 400. FOR EVERYTHING ELSE BASICALLY. Need surgery? Meds? Chronic Illness? 400 for the year and you've fulfilled your deductible. You can keep yourself alive. No more worrying that an ER visit is gonna cost you at least 10K. And yes, sometimes the wait times are a couple months, but that's the case in the US anyways for non-urgent care. Also traveller's insurance is basically built in. If I have to go to the ER abroad, they reimburse it, whether it's 30 dollars or 30,000. And even though dental insurance isn't mandatory, the prices are still regulated so that you're not overcharged.

I only experienced one earthquake and I thought I was tripping.Where I’m from, we don’t really get earthquakes. So I didn’t know we had one until I watched the news that night .

Love your videos. They always motivate me to continue to work hard to pay off my debt. I’m not sure if you’ve talked about this before but do you track/focus on your credit score?
@AjaDang

Ciera Austin well I use credit karma but since I’m paying off my debt so quickly, I don’t need to track my credit score bc i know it’s good just bc of how much I pay off in debt every month

I have to say I am super impressed with the dent you made in your student loans. Also, I used to work for a company that advocates for Freelancers - it's really no joke being in that profession. Good luck with the health insurance journey!

I just want to give some advice about your problems with companies not fulfilling payment. You should probably have documents on your end for them to agree to pay by certain period of time, like quarterly for example, or you will tack interest onto their debt to you. A company like Asics would probably just pay you the 10,000 with a properly written letter from a lawyer threatening suit, since it would most likely cost more for them to pursue a suit against you with in house or private council. Most companies source attorneys from outside their own company for litigation. Also, I'm curious to how much you are paying your lawyer for doing this work for you. If he is charging you more than 250 an hour then you are paying way too much. I love your videos, and wish you best of luck in getting what you are owed!

every partnership, we sign a deal. So we do have documents. Fortunately, I'm not paying for the lawyer. My management does, and they just get a percentage of everything I make.
