I agree with you Janey! I like it when you keep it real! I live in Texas 9a and I’m struggling with my garden because of the heat 🥵!!! I will be putting in irrigation in the fall. Watering by hand is so hard since I have a medium garden.

They are called Magic Lilies or Spider Lilies in my garden. Sister in law gave me 2 or 3 50 years ago and over the years I have separated them and transplanted them all over my yard. BEAUTIFUL surprise end of July when They shoot up overnight. Magical and delicate in the midst of summer. The green fronds come up in spring along with my daffodils. Let them brown down before cutting back because the bulbs feed on the green fronds then when my garden is looking a little sad end of July these magic or Spider Lilies come up overnight and such happy and delightful surprise. Our hot sun usually takes them out in a few days. I wish we could have them around longer. I just LOVE them!!! Hope you enjoy yours as much as I love mine. SUPER BIG HUGS AND MUCH LOVE

You absolutely have a beautiful garden. I watch a KZbin channel that this guy is an arborist and he lives in California and I’m sure he could tell you what kind of oak you have. His name is Blair Glenn and he is very knowledgeable. Of course you know I live in Tx and it’s hot here. So far 28 days with 100 degrees temps and we average only 20 days. Anyway keep up the amazing garden and God bless!

Janey, your garden is beautiful. The bulbs by the Oak are Amaryllis Belladonna, Naked Ladies. I used to have a ton in my backyard down in LA. Actually found some bulbs here in Virginia and planted them. So far they haven't bloomed, but I do get foliage early in the year. I'm hoping they will bloom this year. Gosh, I sure do miss some of the plants you can grow, and I can't here in hot, humid zone 7b, so I really enjoy seeing your garden. Thank you so much! PS I can talk about plants all day too!

When you showed us the side yard and the rain barrels I noticed the tree that appeared to be surrounded with gravel. I remember feeling sorry for that tree and it’s roots with the heat-absorbing rocks on its roots. Maybe give it some love/ compost and weak teas of seaweed and fish emulsion. Those birches look so whimsical.

I’m only a year late to view this and I haven’t read through the other comments, but about that bulb without leaves, I think it’s a Naked Lady. They grow all over the Sac Valley and up into the foothills. They’re a sweet scented pale pink lily. A nice surprise when they show up. Leaves grow at other times of the year, I think. I recall them growing at abandoned homesteads on the old Pony Express Trail.

You have every reason to show off that beautiful crepe myrtle. It just have been a beautiful summer gift when it started blooming in the first year of being in your home. That is actually my favourite colour blossom of all the crepe myrtles. That form and shape is stunning against the blue sky. I don’t mind the dropping blooms - looks like a pink carpet. Love from sunny Sydney, Australia.

First morning on vacation here in northern California by the coast and watched your tour in full. Thank you so much for taking the time to go through the plants. It is really helpful. You have given me ideas for my own garden projects in Portland Oregon zone 8. I think your idea of moving the calla lilies to the back shade area is a good idea and I'd suggest taking some of the foxtail fern back too. They would look great together- frame the front of the lilies with the ferns. Keep up the great teaching and learning journey you are on, it is sooo helpful.

Hi Janey. So happy I just discovered your show, because I'm in zone 9b northern CA too. Your garden looks beautiful! I like seeing what works for you and what doesn't. It's so helpful. So hot and dry here. I'm trying to go with drought tolerant plants, but sometimes even those plants get fried. I thought echinaceas were drought tolerant, but someone from a local nursery said "not in California." They still need regular watering. Yes, those spikes coming out of the ground that you questioned look like Pink Naked Ladies or Belladonna. I love them, they used to grow around the farm where I grew up. Thank you for the garden tour.

First time watching your channel, I really loved the tour. I know this was last year’s tour but it got me excited for summer this year. Long time follower of Ciscoe Morris, Paul Allen, Planteria, Laura from Garden Answer and many others…your new on my repeat and dig gardening list❤ I don’t have much of a choice this year for working out in my garden as I had surgery 4 days ago….will be in a arm cast for 2 months and then 6 weeks of physical therapy. Just going to enjoy what I have. Watching YT gardening and drooling over all the pretty plants for my fix😊 Have been an avid gardener for 45 years and not being able to do what you love is definitely a challenge. This year will be a new set of eyes to just enjoy my garden beds throughout which I often tell my husband let’s go take a walk in our park😊 Thank You for sharing your beautiful cottage garden!

Oh my goodness, that crape myrtle! I'm so jealous, it provides so much architectural interest all year and beauty while in bloom. I used to have a very gnarly, very old pink oleander tree in my parkway. I loved that tree and cried when it succumbed to oleander blight. Enjoy that beauty, mess and all. So worth it! Your garden is glorious. 💚 Had to come add I love Portulaca! My color theme this year is pink and white, but last year's Portulaca reseeded in a couple of spots so I left it. 😁

Now THAT 'S a Crepe Myrtle!! What an opening! It has the presence of a mature bougainvillea! Verbena loves your space! Gorgeous!! Trailing purple lantana is a beast for me in Texas! My full sun space is limited, so I might be giving mine the boot after this year, because it just doesn't bloom great in part sun. Leadwort (hardy plumbago), candytuft, creeping phlox, and pink skullcap would all do well in place of the lantana next to the lamium. Leadwort has flowers summer to fall with fall color foliage in fall. The other 3 would be evergreen for you. Skullcap might lose some foliage possibly in winter.

I have loved this tour, with the commentary on what is working, what is not, and what you want to change. Take a look at loropetalum to replace those daylilies as they can handle a lot of different light situations including that kind of high shade. There are a lot of different size options these days, for example 'purple daydream' is 3x4 at maturity. There are even groundcover varieties that don't get taller than 1'.

The oak tree bed is looking great, I recently visited NC and they have full grown crepe myrtyles, so jealous they’re not truly hardy for me!!

Hi Janey, it might be a naked lady lily. So called because there are no leaves until later.jd

Janey, I’m in 9b (Terrytown, LA) and I can’t get Foxglove to grow in the summer. Maybe it’s too much sun. I haven’t tried them in the fall or winter. I say leave them & see if they flush out in cooler weather. I like these longer videos, but my housework & cooking doesn’t get done LOL.

Those pink flowers you were asking about are called pink naked ladies. The flowers come first and then the leaves after. Very pretty.

You have such a beautiful garden space! We just bought a house in November and I’ve been impatiently trying to add flower gardens to the yard as when we moved in all that was here was ornamental grass! You’re an inspiration but I could not stand those triple digit temps in Cali! 🥵

Your tree is stunning! WOW! I love your garden tours. My garden is suffering from a heat weave here in South Germany. We have no irrigation and watering is difficult. I can´t keep up with it. But last night it rained - YEAH! Love 💛🦋💛
