Hi Mr. Putnam. I heard your nursery closed. Is that true? If so, was it because of the pandemic?
@JimPutnam4 жыл бұрын
I closed my nursery a couple of years ago actually. A developer built houses on that land. I have another space to build, but I decided I didn't want to be tied to a nursery anymore.

In Florida, July is when we get the most rain, so we need to make sure we turn the sprinklers off, the plants drown almost every day so its always a challenge. July is also our fertilizer ordinance month, so that the fertilizer doesn't run off to the lakes or underground water supply. Some professionals have the credentials to do so, because they know which components are banned, such as nitrogen.

I pruned about 2 feet off of some of my (20 year old very well established, very overgrown) azaleas back in late April after the flowers died off. I can't believe how beautiful they look right now with all of their new growth! They're going to be so full again next spring, and I can't wait! lol Thanks to you, I also realized that the "holly" I thought was doing poorly isn't a holly at all! It's a leatherleaf mahonia and the new growth on it this year is beautiful. I'm trying to propagate a new one (along with a few other shrubs) right now from clippings.

Awesome. We are doing our first fall/winter garden this year. Zone 8a central Texas. I’m finding July by end is going to be busy seeding, and then planting in sept/oct. wish me luck! Lol. Thanks for all your advice each month on what to do or get done. I usually have things I don’t get to, but it really helps for the most part. Enjoy your channel so much. 👏🏻💕👏🏻

Hey Jim, July is such a hot, humid month here in VA. It only gets worse in August. I basically walk around the yard and check for plants that are being eaten by bugs or critters and organically spray them. I have an azalea that needs to be replaced but I won’t do that until at least September. Thanks for the video.

EXCELLENT VIDEO JIM....As always I learn a lot of things from you....Very clear and you touch a lot of those most important things. I will be looking forward in July for the Drip system. I do not have one, and I would like to learn more on it.....I water manually and I noticed some of my plants have those white stain from hard water....I do not know how to install a drip system from scratch. Hoping I would learn more from you....Thank you so much Jim......

Thank you these were super helpful tips! I had to go out and look and sure enough I had suckers on some of my trees that had to go. Also "something WEIRD" I live in zone 6b and was given a pink oleander bush as a gift by someone who did not realize how far north I lived. Those are super tropical plants and I was SURE it would just be a one year thing ... well.... IT CAME BACK. It grows out from the base/bottom during spring after I hack it back to about 9 inches and it gets like 2 feet tall before winter, even has flowers at the moment. Have you ever heard of this? I thought it was bizarre. It is in a sunny/sheltered spot. People are always asking me what it is and getting a shock when I tell them.

The Japanese Beetles came with a vengeance in my garden last week and have been gobbling my poor rose shrubs (like 4-5 to a bloom...arghh). I can't believe how hungry these pests are! I too try my best not to treat with insecticides but gotta do it (organically). One beneficial plant I have growing is Virginia Creeper and the beetles seem to be chomping away at that. I'm very ok with them feeding on that since the birds are nesting in it as well! Thx for all the great info!

Got bad here in Georgia too, really doing a number on my morning glories & zinnia. I just brush them off into soapy water & pick off leaves that are really ugly, plenty of leaves left to keep plant happy. Strangely, not on my moon vine, same family & growing together. Heard Jenny at Creekside say Pentas seem to be resistant to Japanese beetles, will include more of them next year. At least we know they won't last all summer but really annoying atm!

The Japanese Beatles right now are killing me! My new knock out rose is taking the brunt of it, poor thing. I sprayed neem oil on it last night but I saw more today. Anyway, I know they'll be gone soon. Thanks for the reminder that I need to divide my irises this month. That whole bed needs a lot of love - volunteer gum trees have rooted in there and continuously cutting them back isn't working, so I'll need to dig up the roots while I'm working.

I've found new planting, especially in hotter months, need deep watering. If you don't have drip, get a cheap hose end cut-off valve & set it up to drip at the edge of the hole. Just wetting the first 2 inches of soil promotes root growth that's not deep enough for overall health. I keep my eyes peeled for ragweed seedlings, they pull up easy if still short & each one you pull won't make seeds, or allergies. I pull them up along my dirt road when I walk the dog, neighbors must wonder about me!

Speaking of potatoes, I have a question...have you ever heard of termites getting into grow bags of potatoes? I didnt fill my grow bags with woodchips or mulch, just compost and soil. But when I tipped my bags, they were full of termites.
@junesmart73524 жыл бұрын
Is it possible they were earwigs, not termites? This is my first year to experience earwigs, and I initially thought they were termites (which I have never experienced, either).

Would it still be okay to partially or hard rejuvenate prune some mature overgrown yews right now? I've read late winter to spring is best and have been slowly pruning them all spring to reduce size. I cut one leggy one down to a little over a foot in Feb/March and it has already sent out fluffy new growth but wonder if it's too late to continue now.
