Growing In The Garden

Күн бұрын

Come walk through my garden with me as we talk about the garden tasks to do during July in the low desert of Arizona. Gardening in July can be challenging, so I'll show you what you can do to help your garden survive this hot month. I've learned more about gardening in challenging conditions in the four years since filming the last Arizona Garden in July video.
I hope it’s helpful. If you have ideas for what else to include in these monthly task videos, please let me know in the comments.

I appreciate your channel so much!! I wish I was gardening, but I'm unable to garden this season, and most likely, many more seasons. I'm caring for my mom with onset dementia, diabetes, and arthritis that makes her unstable on her own feet, which has included a few falls, but luckily, nothing broken. My body is taking a beating because of it, and my sleep is affected because of recent falls. Every little noise has me up and checking because she's still able to move, but sometimes the dementia has her forgetting to use her walker. At least I can watch your garden on sleepless nights and live vicariously through you, but just won't keep the delicious food. Have a beautiful July, and I look forward to your next video. ❤

@mgm2008 I have one, but she's still able to get up to use the restroom, but with her walker, and the times she's fell is when she doesn't use her walker. We're getting a physical therapist to come in, so hopefully, they'll help, but the main issue is that she keeps thinking that a Dr is going to prescribe the fountain of youth and she doesn't understand that she's going to be 80 and did not listen to Dr's telling her to exercise, follow her diet to keep her diabetes in check and to use her walker because if she falls, her arthritis is going to flare up and cause major pain. Plus, with dementia, pain meds intensify her mind cloudiness and the progression of dementia. So basically, she's her worst enemy because she causes herself to deteriorate faster by her stubbornness. I'm just happy that I'm able to keep her from going into a care center and that I have family who help, at least when she doesn't throw a tantrum because she doesn't want them to know how she causes her own issues. I feel like I'm caring for a toddler that wants to challenge everything you ask or need them to do. I guess when she cursed me w/ a child 10 x's worse than me, it indeed up coming true, but it's her. Ha!

This is my first year ever having a garden bed in North Phoenix. I call it my experimental bed as I am learning so much from it. Having shade and enough mulch to lock in moisture are two of the most important tasks in the low desert. Unfortunately my plants are not producing due to the recent heat waves. I did get a few zucchini from my squash plant. I was so proud. I use you as a reference all the time and am so thankful for your wisdom! Thank you for inspiring me to grow!

All these growing guides, and your calendar I have has been a game changer for me. Life is super busy for me so I didn’t get to plant spring. So I recently covered my beds with a 6” layer of compost and water deeply once a week. I’m also planning for fall. Thank you for great videos from north of you by about an hour.

Water Misters spraying fine water mist from the ceiling of one end of our patio. But we don't stay outdoors much... Mostly to get into our air-conditioned vehicles, to go somewhere w/ AC - when we have to. LOL. 😅 __ Stay safe & joyful! May God bless you! 🥰

Great video and beautiful garden despite those temps in July in Arizona! I've been using shade cloth, mulch and watering every other day in Southwest Oregon. We do not get any rain for like 75 days...spider mites thrive so I will start watering down my beans! I have been orienting my garden so taller plants grow on the west side shielding the sun during the hot part of the day. It was 102 today and we have another 4 days of 100 degree weather :(. Love your videos!

(I posted a reply, but it disappeared. Hopefully this won't show up twice.) I like to sow some seeds in July for the crops/flowers that are sort of tired due to age/heat/pest pressure/disease, etc. Things that aren't too many days to harvest like determinate varieties of tomatoes or cherry types, small melons, cucumbers, sunflowers, etc. That way in case the ones out in the garden die, I'll have a replacement and I won't feel too sad. Thanks for all your information, Angela! I'm always so inspired by your knowledge and your willingness to share it with us all!

I’m having trouble with my trees for the first time in 15 years since they were planted. I believe they have insects which I am treating. I have one plum tree which I am struggling with the most and my grapefruit tree. Today as last effort we fertilized them by drilling holes in the ground and poring in granulated fertilizer. I know it’s probably the wrong time of year but they are only getting worse if I do nothing. My major question is how often should I be watering each? And the plum tree is in my grass area so I need to water my grass also. Any tips I would appreciate. I am in Cave Creek so I have about the same weather as you. Scorching!

Would love to know how you harvest and prepare the berries? I have learned SO much from watching your videos - we picked up a truck load of compost from the az worm farm before it got hot and I’m so glad we did! Garden is actually surviving the summer so far. Hoping to get the soil blend this fall and really step up things.

My tomatillos and cucumbers are still growing like crazy and taking over the 4x8’ bed (planted on east side of house so they get shade). A lot of flowers (both male and female) but not much fruit (which I expected). I was thinking of cutting them down but then I see you said no pruning. It’s a jungle, should I cut back or wait? It’s hard to examine them for pests due to the growth. I’m in Chandler.

If you have too many, they will self prune. Sometimes I hear the bird pecking on them to check. But also if I don’t water my tree for at least 1 hour every week or more often then that is what happens. The tree is trying to save energy.
